shews the power of advertising.
first time i went past the central school of speech n drama, still at school, i was a bit surprised, disapproving, that they had a theatre named after a cigarette, embassy.
i presumed it was some kind of sponsorship deal.
now think i misjudged them due to my ignorance.

We had green shield stamps can't remember what we got with them maybe we never collected enough.
My MIL and husband both smoked and saved Embassy cigarette coupons, my BIL who was younger than me poured over the catalogue for what you could get. One day he asked me to guess what the best prise was, coming from a non-smoking or so I thought house I replied"An Iron Lung" there was a big campaign at the time about the link between cancer and cigarettes.
My oh so dear MIL turned on me and told me my lovely dad was a smoker he had been seen with them at work. I never asked him but realised when I saw smoke in the greenhouse she was right.

Oh yes I remember the excitement when I finally had enough to redeem them for a tea set, money was really tight at the time!

DH worked in a garage at night and weekends - no self-service in those days. Often people didn’t bother to get out of their cars and would just hand him their money and tell him to keep the Green Shield Stamps.
He saved them in a glass jar and we got all sorts of kitchen stuff for our first home.

those were the rich people who couldn't be bothered collecting them.
glad the real worker got some reward !

I collected them and so did Mum. I remember sticking the stamps in all those books but have no idea now what they were exchanged for.

My Mother used to collect them, I remember her exchanging them for kitchen items. She also collected the Coop Blue stamps.

When I was 16 I lived in a hamlet and had to walk or cycle everywhere as we had so few busses.

To my dad’s horror , out of the blue , I bought a Honda 50 motorbike off a work colleague when I was 16 .

I can’t remember the cost if the fuel to fill the tank , but I do remember I got just one ☝️ Green Shield stamp!

I remember getting an iron with my stamps, but can`t remember what else. It was only a small iron, but it was a good `un, lasted a few years.
We decorated the front room with paint from Embassy coupons, also got a large saucepan. We were going to gradually get the set of 3, but when the next book came out they weren`t in there.

We had them too. Like many others I don't know what my parents 'bought' with them. I think we got them from the International Stores and from the petrol station.

My mother smoked and collected the cards. I think she smoked cigarettes that began with a W. Walkers? They had a light blue and grey packet. Perhaps they were Embassy.

Could they have been Woodbine cigarettes JackyB.
My dad used to smoke them but I can't remember the colour of the packet.

My sister’s first job after school was working in the offices of Green Shield Stamps, on the North Circular Road in North London. She met Jimmy Saville there!

Oh yes! I can see them in my mind's eye quite clearly, along with the quest for perfection when putting them in the book!

Marydoll Tue 10-Aug-21 08:41:23

I used to get them with petrol and remember using them to get a hose for the garden.

My mother was obsessed with collecting them and I loved it when you got to the end of a book!

Marydoll Tue 10-Aug-21 08:43:01

I also remember people collecting Embassy Cigarettes coupons. Could you imagine that being allowed nowadays?

JackyB Tue 10-Aug-21 08:59:34

Sharon103 definitely not Woodbine. I remember them having a green packet and smelling horrible.

JackyB Tue 10-Aug-21 09:00:15

(not the sort of thing my mother would have had in the house)

JessK Tue 10-Aug-21 10:02:08

Can remember my Dad getting them for petrol and me sticking them into a book. From what I can remember the glue tasted disgusting. I think we got a kettle from them amongst other household items.

I remember spending hours sticking them in the books especially all the single ones. We used them for toys I got a pair of roller skates and a table tennis set and my brother got a cricket set. So much excitement for simple pleasures.

I still have a couple of books left,a little while ago green sheild stamps could be donated to charity.Would any know where I can still dispose of them?

We used to collect them from a supermarket in the 60’s and exchanged them for a Kenwood Chefette electric mixer. It’s still in regular use.
