Spinster.

Makes me visualise a thin, grey-haired, timid, sad lady.

Very out dated for today’s hip young singletons.

Widow - has to be the saddest word in the world.

I hate Douche-bag. A horrible Americanism that my ex dil used too often to refer to someone she considered stupid.
Also, the word eatery seems to have crept into the English language. It makes my toes curl.
I also hate the word fruits. The pleural of fruit is fruit. Why people have started adding an S is beyond me.

Toilet and toileting.
I hear these a lot at work.
"I'm just going to toilet Mrs. Whoever".
Repulsive.

Really dislike the following - fart, belly, bum and kids. Unfortunately in my previous job I had to visit nurseries on a daily basis and heard staff use these words all the time. Also the expression "go potty" when referring to a small child going to use a potty.

Anyone using the F word. Shop assistants saying ‘Have a nice day’. Any Americanisms.

tictacnana Tue 10-Aug-21 18:45:36

The C word is always offensive as is poof, queer etc., obviously. I also dislike Americanisms like butt, vacation, apartment, etc., My sister always pronounces cinema as Kinema and margarine with a hard g . Sets my teeth on edge. Genre is very over used too. I’ve heard it used to describe TYPES of bread !

Quaver22

Bum and belly. When I was very little my mum told me they were very rude words and I’ve never been comfortable saying them!
Palpable. It is such an overused word!

Just seen that you've said the same Quaver 2!

MissElly Tue 10-Aug-21 18:41:37

An Americanism (I think) that I can’t stand is Normalcy. What was wrong with normality?

cc Tue 10-Aug-21 18:40:28

Bum, belly. Just NO...

annodomini Tue 10-Aug-21 18:35:56

Hubby, kiddie, doggie...

Harmonypuss Tue 10-Aug-21 18:23:08

There are only two words that spring to mind for me and they're both swear words. I don't even like to write them but I can get pretty close by giving you the alternatives used in my family....

C u next Tuesday
Twit (with a vowel change)

My adult sons both use these words but not in my presence and change to the above alternatives because they know I object to those words.

If a person is described as “sweet” I immediately hate them?
My mother’s hated word was bastard.

Georgesgran Tue 10-Aug-21 18:14:05

MawBe. ?

jean4a1 Tue 10-Aug-21 18:07:30

pensioner when used to describe an elderly person.

NemoNanna Tue 10-Aug-21 17:25:05

Holibobs instead of holiday!

3dognight Tue 10-Aug-21 17:17:53

Jab, instead of vaccination

‘Grease Nipple’. This was a phrase I had to type regularly on parts lists at work.
It made my nipples ache just typing it.

Mouseybrown60 Tue 10-Aug-21 17:16:25

Awesome fart and people that constantly say “you know” during their sentences.

Witzend Tue 10-Aug-21 17:03:21

We weren’t allowed to say ‘toilet’ either. But I hated ‘lavatory’ and still do. Connotations of freezing cold loos with hard Bronco paper - who else remembers that? IIRC Izal was another, and just as nasty.

Redhead56 Tue 10-Aug-21 16:56:27

Yesterday evening what's wrong with last night?

TrendyNannie6 Tue 10-Aug-21 16:48:25

Panties, Belly, furbaby, the list could go on all day

Buffy Tue 10-Aug-21 16:40:49

Everyone mentions invites now, not invitations.
I don’t like the word trash, prefer rubbish.
Boobs.

Yammy Tue 10-Aug-21 16:31:58

Spinnaker

Detest the word masticate - makes me feel sick.

Reminds me of my dad he hated coconut Liquorice "All sorts" and always called the coconut masticated instead of desiccated. The word still makes me baulk.
I can't stand the word arsie in the last city I lived in it was used all the time and in front of your face you would be challenged and asked if you were being ar.... instead of awkward.

May7 Tue 10-Aug-21 16:18:30

The word I dislike the most is bitch
I can put up with most swear words especially if they are said in a funny way and not in anger but I just cant tolerate this word, even when it's used correctly to describe a female animal it makes me cringe.

Lexisgranny Tue 10-Aug-21 16:15:48

Pants, Hubby and for some reason, dainty!
