The opportunity to learn 'Essex'.

ASSA COMMONS – Our Parliament Building.

ART ATTACK – Extremely perturbed, as in “Don’t tell Sharon, She’ll have an art attack.”

ARST – Past tense of ask. “Jordan, I must’ve arst ya free fazzund times to clear up yer room.”

BANNSA – A person employed to deny access or eject troublemakers at a club. “Dave’s got izself a job as a bannsa.”

BANTY – A chocolate and coconut snack bar.

BAVE – To wash oneself.

BOAF – The two. “Oi Dave, ooja fancy most, Sharon or Tracy?” “Boaf” is the reply.

BRANSATCH – Motor racing circuit in Kent.

This is just for fun, by the way.

Esspee Tue 10-Aug-21 22:39:18

Pretty offensive, rather than fun.

Callistemon Tue 10-Aug-21 22:40:18

???

ARST – Past tense of ask. “Jordan, I must’ve arst ya free fazzund times to clear up yer room.”
Love it!

MissAdventure Tue 10-Aug-21 22:41:01

Oh, do you think so?
I thought someone probably would.

Let it sink then.

Callistemon Tue 10-Aug-21 22:42:57

I think if an Essex person can laugh at themselves it's not offensive.

I'd post some Welsh ones which Welsh friends have told me but perhaps that might get me into trouble.

MissAdventure Tue 10-Aug-21 22:44:25

Looks like they would. shock

MerylStreep Tue 10-Aug-21 22:45:59

EssPee
I think it’s up to us Essex girls to decide if it’s offensive.
It’s not. It’s a very clever piece of writing ????

MissAdventure Tue 10-Aug-21 22:49:05

FONG – Skimpy undergarment.

FOR CRYIN AT LAAD – Mild expletive showing annoyance or surprise. E.G. “For cryin at lad, Britney, if I say Yes will you give it a rest?”

Kate1949 Tue 10-Aug-21 22:49:07

I thought it was clever. I'm a Brummie. Anyone can (and frequently do) take the mickie out of my accent. I find it funny.

Shinamae Tue 10-Aug-21 22:49:27

I think it’s clever and funny…??????

silverlining48 Tue 10-Aug-21 22:55:07

Well it made me ?

timetogo2016 Wed 11-Aug-21 11:49:09

Well you could also be teaching Black Country dialect MissA.
And i think it`s a fun post.
Being a brummie, i`m used to people either taking the Mick or telling me they love my accent.

Chewbacca Wed 11-Aug-21 12:00:44

No thread would be complete without a fun sponge waiting to take offence where none was intended. Absolutely brilliant MissAdventure, thanks for the smile. I'll try to find some Lancashire dialect sayings and will post them. Fun sponges... be prepared!

BlueSky Wed 11-Aug-21 12:03:30

MissA gringrin

Chewbacca Wed 11-Aug-21 12:14:52

JenniferEccles Wed 11-Aug-21 12:58:25

Thank you for posting that MissAdventure
It was very funny.
Don’t be put off adding any more. Only one person claimed to be offended!

Callistemon Wed 11-Aug-21 18:46:48

Ay up me duck, yer'reet?
Bostin thread

MissAdventure Wed 11-Aug-21 19:24:10

UMP – Upset, as in Got the Ump.

Gwyneth Wed 11-Aug-21 19:39:13

I’m always amused when people joke about my accent. But in all honesty I’ve never heard a Welsh person use the term ‘boyo’ which us welsh people are supposed to be famous for! Don’t be put off missadventure it was funny. Some people take offence at just about everything.

granfromafar Wed 11-Aug-21 20:16:52

Sounds like you are translating for Danny Dyer! Thanks for the laugh, Miss A. I'm married to an Essex boy and no offence taken here! Mind you, he speaks posher since we married and only lapses into 'Essex - lingo' when talking to his bruvver. ?

growstuff Wed 11-Aug-21 20:20:30

I've lived in Essex for 40 years and nobody speaks like that round here.

MissAdventure Wed 11-Aug-21 20:26:08

We all do here.
Much as I hate admit it; I do.
It gives me the right 'ump.

growstuff Wed 11-Aug-21 20:27:32

You obviously live in a different part of Essex from me.

MissAdventure Wed 11-Aug-21 20:29:41

Thankfully. grin

Callistemon Wed 11-Aug-21 20:41:19

I'm sure there are terribly, terribly posh parts of Essex too.
As there are everywhere.

I can remember my mother telling me off for saying munna, dunna, wunna etc then telling me I sounded like a snob after elocution lessons at school!
I couldn't win.
