Do you like it, and does the icecream man come to your neck of the woods?

Lastly, what is your favourite flavour, please?

Moggycuddler Fri 13-Aug-21 11:19:26

I like ice cream but only what I buy from supermarkets. I never trust ice cream van people to be hygienic enough, specially since covid. But I'm a bit obsessive about things like that.

pen50 Fri 13-Aug-21 11:19:47

Yes, yes, and I have a 99 but in a cup not a cone.

When my daughters were little we used to tell them that the ice cream van bells were actually the vicar on his rounds. They believed us for a long time… I’m not sure they’ve never forgiven us!

crazyH Fri 13-Aug-21 11:21:52

Yes
Yes
Pistachio

That’s just reminded me of a friend 40 odd years ago who told her children the ice cream van chimes were to let everyone know he was sold out.

We get a van every day even in winter!!. My favourite flavour is Haagen Daz macadamia nut brittle, not been able to get it in the UK since they closed their store in Leicester Square about 15 years ago.

Mishy Fri 13-Aug-21 11:34:57

We have 2 ice cream vans which circle around weekly both are ok but expensive so have stopped giving my custom. Shame really.

Theoddbird Fri 13-Aug-21 11:36:56

I would get a shock if one drove along the riverbank...hahaha I don't eat icecream.

NannyDaft Fri 13-Aug-21 11:43:51

Yes
Rum and Raisin ! Or vanilla

Aepgirl Fri 13-Aug-21 11:53:12

We have an ice cream man who lives down the road here, but he only comes up the road after he’s been to an event and has ice cream left over!

If I have ice cream out (really only like it at the seaside) then it’s usually coffee.

win Fri 13-Aug-21 11:58:50

Grannanannywanny ours too, just love them

Missiseff Fri 13-Aug-21 12:07:23

Every Sunday, regular as clockwork, at 1.15 smile It's a local family-run one, that used to come to the estate where I grew up too. the ice-cream is white and the best! I don't have one very often. Chocolate's my favourite but only have it when on holiday. Has anyone tried the one in Waitrose, half chocolate, half orange sorbet? Oh my days!!!!!!

Lupin Fri 13-Aug-21 12:07:35

Never seen in my area.
My daughter used to take a van out during the summer hols when she was at university. She had to work very hard and never got a break. I used to pick her up from the farm that made the ice cream and I was working my way down a list of fab flavours as I waited. My favourite was ginger and honey. closely followed by Christmas pudding.

Nana4 Fri 13-Aug-21 12:11:02

Yes, I love it, beating all the children in the queue ?

homefarm Fri 13-Aug-21 12:17:18

Short answer No. Haven't seen one here in years.

olliebeak Fri 13-Aug-21 12:18:42

I've not seen an Ice Cream Van for many years - but around here there are mostly 'older people'.

However, there's always one in my favourite park - so that's a very welcome part of our visit.

I'm Coeliac, so can't have their Cones or Wafers. Have to ask for a 'Tub'. Usually buy my own at the supermarket and get Ice Cream from there as well. Favourite is Vanilla with Caramel swirls and some nuts (NOT Pistachio or Almond though).

Esspee Fri 13-Aug-21 12:22:41

Witzend

Not bothered, but I like a bit of vanilla on some hot puddings, e.g. bread and butter or sticky toffee. But then I don’t like cream.

It really grieves me to add that yesterday I threw out two virtually full tubs of ice cream - one chocolate something or other, one strawberry sundae - which I had allowed young Gdcs to choose from the supermarket.

Neither of them liked their choice! So I won’t be doing that again. Dh* and I will never eat them, and they were taking up too much room in my small freezer, so they had to go.
Sinful waste, I know.
*he loves Magnums, though!

I never see an ice cream van here, but one is a regular visitor to dd’s road, where there are a number of young children.

I never throw food away. Surely a neighbour, friend, relative or even a random person could have helped you out and enjoyed it.
I have to admit that if I couldn’t have found anyone else to take it off my hands I would have eaten it rather than discard it.

Probably explains me being a bit overweight.

Alioop Fri 13-Aug-21 12:40:32

I can here his chimes in the distance, but he doesn't come as far as my house. We have a few local ice cream parlours as I live by the sea so I've a couple of favourites.
Chocca Bear- vanilla with chunks of
honeycomb & Belgian chocolate
Strawberry Cheesecake- vanilla with biscuit & strawberry sauce. Also jammie dodger ice-cream tastes the same.
Bailey's & Biscoff mixed together in vanilla ice cream. This is my latest to try.
Honestly a Mr.Whippy with lime sauce & a flake beat the fancy ones though any day.

Kaggi60 Fri 13-Aug-21 12:44:15

Yes the ice cream van comes everyday to the street above at the same time if I fancy one I wait and get a oyster shell it is messy but enjoy it.

missdeke Fri 13-Aug-21 13:02:41

Not tempted although he comes down our road. We have an ice cream shop in the village with delicious ice cream. My favourites are vanilla and lemon meringue flavours.

Grannynannywanny

^Morrison's salted caramel is delicious too Grannywannynanny. Same price. They were doing 2 packs for £1.50 a while back. I got as many in the freezer as I could.^

Thanks for the tip off muse Now I know where to go when the shelf is bare in Tesco.

I ate my last one last night.
I've got 2 boxes of Tesco Chocolate & Caramel Ice Cream Sticks 3X110ml in my delivery tonight. They are to die for and I'm seriously addicted. Only £1 for 3 lollies.
I've heard the ice cream van a couple of days this week. He's not been around for ages.
These days being able to stock up in our freezers I wouldn't
imagine they do a great deal of business like they used to.
I used to like the 99 cone, cider lollies and banana ones.
My daughter bought me some cider ice lollies from Asda but they weren't so nice.

jenni123 Fri 13-Aug-21 14:27:15

My favourite, I found when I lived abroad, it was made by Movenpick and the flavour is Maple Walnut. Ocado used to sell it and it was expensive but they do not have it now. My usual flavour now is vanilla, sometimes put golden syrup on it,

Unigran4 Fri 13-Aug-21 14:31:46

As I clicked this thread open our local ice cream van began to play its tune! Sadly he concentrates on the estates either side of me and never comes down my cul-de-sac, which is a shame (for him) because we have 11 young families down here.

When my children were little and we held coffee mornings, the first one to hear the van would start singing a song the children knew very loudly. All the Mums joined in to drown out the ice cream van music. Worked a treat!

Unigran4 Fri 13-Aug-21 14:32:32

So, yes, yes, and Ginger and Honey

Lulubelle500 Fri 13-Aug-21 14:44:27

My favourite is coffee too, Notagran. I make Nigella Lawson's One Step recipe as it's sooooo easy, no ice cream maker needed, only an electric whisk and a lot of willpower so you don't spoon it up as soon as it's frozen! (I only make it if I'm having people to dinner as I have no will power.)
An ice cream van used to come 4.30 on the dot every day, Winter or Summer. He'd park opposite; I work in the front of my house and could see him washing his hands in a basin before the queue of kids formed. Then one day he didn't come and since then there's never been another one. A neighbour told me someone had complained about the noise so often the Council had to get involved...
