Do you think other supermarkets should follow? I applaud this decision.

I agree 100%,and i think all shops should follow suite.
Nanawind, you are spot on,An American company is taking over Morrisons.
But i read that they will only be having self service checkouts, can`t see that working tbh.

I wrote to the chairman of Sainsbury’s last year about closing on Boxing Day but had no reply and Sainsbury’s were open as usual.
Aldi and probably Lidl always close boxing day and also New Year’s Day too. They also pay above the average. Good for them.
If Morrison’s have been taken over by Americans it’s unlikely they will get any concession given their 24/7 shopping style .
In Europe shops close on Sunday’s and bank holidays as we used to do and as we should still do.

I believe that Morrisons are being taken over by an American company.

Makes perfect sense. Let's hope others follow their lead.

They are Tesco by the way if you are reading Mr Tesco.

Yes,my son and his partner deserve an extra day with my 3year old DGD,after the busy christmas run up,he works nights, she works days and evenings, share chid care, with some support from me where needed, both shattered they deserve an extra day.

Why is this news in the middle of August? hmm

lemsip Thu 12-Aug-21 22:54:09

that's because they are having to save money, they are getting rid of night shifts in some areas and creating twilight shifts and so staff are losing money. unsettling staff who've worked well during pandemic now treating them with disdain.....lots of cut backs going on .

Mapleleaf Thu 12-Aug-21 22:51:31

Yes, an excellent idea.

Most people buy enough to feed an army, never mind their family, at Christmas anyway, so shops being shut on Boxing Day should really be no hardship, and will be a well deserved break for all those battle weary shop and delivery workers. It should happen every year, in my opinion, but I imagine the big supermarkets won't want to see their profits dwindle!!

MiniMoon Thu 12-Aug-21 22:17:49

I should think so too. Everywhere ought to be closed on Boxing Day. If people can't live without shopping for two days it's a bad job.
Good for Morrisons.

Splendid news.
If people can’t shop for two days heaven help them.
Sunday opening was a bad move in my view.

I agree about Sunday opening too. A big mistake.

Grannybags Thu 12-Aug-21 21:21:03

Very pleased about this. Hopefully others will do the same

Shinamae Thu 12-Aug-21 21:13:35

Good decision, I am another one that doesn’t agree with Sunday opening either…

MoorlandMooner Thu 12-Aug-21 21:06:52

Good old Morrisons.

Callistemon Thu 12-Aug-21 19:52:04

Well done Morrisons, all other retail outlets should follow your lead.

As long as it is paid leave.

AGAA4 Thu 12-Aug-21 19:48:30

The last thing I want to do on Boxing Day is to go shopping. I hope they all close this year.

muse Thu 12-Aug-21 19:32:57

Well done Morrison’s. I hope all the others do.

Lincslass Thu 12-Aug-21 19:25:34

Good decision by Morrison’s. In fact no supermarket, or shop for that matter needs to open on Boxing Day. After all it was to give workers a day off to spend with their families, taking a box of gifts from their employers.

Witzend Thu 12-Aug-21 19:17:10

I don’t know about anybody else, but one reason I love the week after Christmas, is that with lots of lovely leftovers to eat up, I barely need to go shopping at all.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 12-Aug-21 19:14:43

I am another one who hopes all shops will follow Morrison’s decision, when you see how full folks trolleys are in the lead up to Christmas I am surprised they need to shop for at least a week.

annsixty Thu 12-Aug-21 19:06:26

Witzend Thu 12-Aug-21 19:01:17

Yes - and I hope they all follow suit.

eazybee Thu 12-Aug-21 18:59:15

Yes I do think so.

granfromafar Thu 12-Aug-21 18:55:58

Good decision. Everyone can manage without going shopping for 2 days so I hope others follow suit.

Biscuitmuncher Thu 12-Aug-21 18:53:39

They should have never opened up in the first place
