Good Morning all. How much sleep do you get each night? ( on average)

I sleep for 4 hours, wake up, fall back to sleep for maybe another 2 & that’s it.
I remember the days when I slept for 10 hours straight.
Just wondering if it’s an age thing as I still work and lead a busy life.

Calendargirl Sat 21-Aug-21 07:17:01

I should think I average about 6 hours. Go to the loo at least once, maybe twice, sometimes go straight back to sleep, sometimes not.
Was in bed by 9.30 last night as felt tired, but wide awake by 5, made myself stay in bed until 5.30. Got up then, went and picked tomatoes in the greenhouse, then walked to fetch my Saturday paper. Eating my breakfast by about 6.45.

Should say when younger very rarely had to go to the loo in the night, could be age, but I also drink more water than I did years ago.

According to my sleep monitor (part of my activity monitor/step counter) I sleep 7 hrs 20 mins on average. I too used to get up to go bathroom at least once but I seem to of trained myself not to need to go in the night so now sleep through.

About 5 hours in at least two sessions

I’ve been an insomniac for years-just undergone online CBT. Had to keep a sleep diary then sleep restrictions. It has helped in that I don’t spend hours wide awake now but I do still wake about two hours. And need loo too despite not drinking so much in the evening too! So am permanently tired sadly!

To answer your question, not enough. About 5 hours of interrupted sleep waking every 90 minutes. My night ends anytime from about 4 am.

If desperate I take a pill but these don’t always work.

silverlining48 Sat 21-Aug-21 08:19:12

Forgot to say I can’t doze or have a nap of any sort during the day. It just doesn’t happen.

dogsmother Sat 21-Aug-21 08:24:23

7/8 hours but very broken. Up to the loo at least twice and regular switch on of bbc sounds. I use a 15 /30 minute timer usually enough sometimes though it can take a lot more.
Nothing more satisfying than not having to use that option and sleep through (apart from toilet )

BlueBelle Sat 21-Aug-21 08:37:50

Silverlining I m similar to you, difference is I don’t mind and don’t expect anything different, my night normally ends at 4am but I don’t mind I listen to the radio, play around on here I have never taken a pill just take it as granted that this is my sleep pattern
I do sometimes nap evenings or late afternoon but apparently this is normal and we all expect too much sleep

My MiFit tells me it’s an average of 6hrs 45mins. Up until a few months ago it was consistently 7hrs 15mins. I blame our noisy neighbourhood wood pigeon who starts up his ruddy cooing at about 6am every day.

I don’t feel tired generally so what I have is probably enough.

SkyBird Sat 21-Aug-21 08:47:10

Usually seven to eight hours in the summer. Longer and better in the winter. Our summer nighttime temperature very rarely fall below 28°C. Sleeping with air conditioning and fans is not ideal.

5-6 hours (sometimes less), used to sleep like a log. I usually take about an hour to fall asleep (I have a racing mind and suffer from anxiety) and wake about 6.30 but don’t have to get up for a good hour. I’ve sort of accepted it and will take a nap on the days I’m not working.

mokryna Sat 21-Aug-21 08:59:59

If I go to bed before midnight I can’t sleep or I wake up after a couple of hours but I have 3 alarms to make sure I don’t sleep pass 8 am as I am worried that if I sleep longer I will be turning daytime into night. I am lucky as don’t have to get up in the night and I refuse to give into naps, as that will take the edge of falling asleep at night.

Last night from 10:30 to 5, trip to loo, eye mask on, woke at 8:22. But usually 8 hours with one loo trip. I’ve never napped downstairs.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 21-Aug-21 09:41:53

I feel guilty saying about 8 1/2 hours, unbroken. No loo trips. We do live in the depths of the country though, no noise, no street lights.

BBbevan Sat 21-Aug-21 09:48:20

I am in bed for nine hours but only sleep about six of those. I am regularly awake around 2-3 for a few hours. Fast asleep this morning when DH woke me with a cup of tea. I normally have a doze for half a hour after lunch.

Redhead56 Sat 21-Aug-21 09:50:53

I get about five hours sleep I don’t go to bed until early hours of the morning. It’s an old habit that returned a while ago my arthritic knee wakes me and makes me restless.

Grannynannywanny Sat 21-Aug-21 10:04:56

I average about 5 hours but never unbroken. I was struggling to stay awake at 11pm. Went to bed and my brain switched on as soon as I lay down and didn’t sleep for another hour.

I’d love to know why it’s easy to sleep slumped in an uncomfortable position in an armchair but difficult in a comfy bed!

FlexibleFriend Sat 21-Aug-21 10:13:07

10 hours most nights and never less than 8.

Granmarderby10 Sat 21-Aug-21 10:24:17

Yep Grannynannywanny I would love to know that too ?

Charleygirl5 Sat 21-Aug-21 10:37:15

I have taken to dozing during the day. I read for at least an hour when I go to bed and I sleep on average 8 hours each night with one or two trips to the loo. I return to bed and am sleep immediately. I live in London but it is astonishingly quiet. I would hear a cat whimper but not a fire engine.

Ailidh Sat 21-Aug-21 10:40:40

For most of my life I got 8 hours' sleep, could doze in the afternoon, never saw whodunnit in Midsomer, and then get another 8 hours.

It all went awry during chemo about 7 years ago, and not sleeping properly became fixated in my mind as a sign of being mentally broken. I'm vastly improved but still don't sleep as insouciantly as I did for the first 58 years of life.

I now get about 6.5 hours of unbroken. I sometimes could do with a bit more but I worry that if I do, I might struggle to get off again the next night, and it's the getting off that's the issue.

I love getting up early, so usually sleep 22:00-04:30.

Georgesgran Sat 21-Aug-21 10:43:45

I’ve never napped in the day - my Mother always frowned on it - long story.
For me I go to bed in the early hours and usually wake before 6am - so 4 or 5 hours would be my answer.

Witzend Sat 21-Aug-21 10:52:06

I’m often awake for a few hours, e.g. between 2 and 5 am, or 1 and 4. Reading, or listening to the World Service, or downstairs making a cup of tea.
I will then often go into a deep sleep from say 4 or 5 am until 8 or 9.
Must be an age thing. Needless to say I usually need the loo a couple of times, too.
I look back wistfully to the days when I’d just go to bed and sleep soundly until morning.

I do quite often have a zizz on the sofa in the afternoon, but from experience I’ve found that whether I have or not, it makes zero difference.
Tea and coffee are strictly decaf after around 10 am, too, so it’s not that, either.
