Do you hate the sound of your own voice?

I don’t mind my voice although it sounds different on a recording. With all the online lessons with oral instructions I had to do during lockdown, I’m more used to it now. One mum emailed a thank you saying how reassuring her child had found it to hear my voice on the lesson, and she just loves my accent. The compliment was lovely, but my accent? I don't know what she means

Surprisingly, I've been told that I sound young and, would you believe sexy - what a load of cobblers! What was he after, I ask myself? I think I sound like a slightly less excitable Su Pollard, though my accent isn't particularly broad.

Dear late husband used to say that he loved my voice and never tired of hearing it BUT that doesn't mean that he was actually listening or could recall anything I said.

During lockdown when my choir was unable to meet, we each recorded our own voices singing our choir parts. What a shock when you hear your own voice singing (on its own). Our choir leader, a professional singer, had prewarned us, saying ‘you will hate what you hear, as nobody sounds the way they think they do.’ How right she is!

I was a teacher, and feel so sorry for the children who had to listen to me day after day. My Scottish accent is pleasant enough, my expression is good, but the actual tone is nasal, and, I feel, grating. Like others, I would never have known this if I hadn’t heard myself on recordings.

i don't mind my voice, only problem i have ever had is going to england and people saying i talk too fast, but i think that is a common problem as i am from glasgow. other people in coventy think i am from newcastle.....i laugh and say wash your mouth out i am from glasgow...lol

I know the feeling grannybuy. I have a whiny to e. When I can, I focus on lowering my voice to get rid of it, but I can't be that aware all the time.

A huge NO, not least because I have friends who have no voice at all, either through throat surgery or because they are hearing/speech impaired.

I don't like hearing my voice , but I hate even more seeing myself in photographs or on video. I look so old and tired, not at all what I see in the mirror !

Back when my sons were teenagers (and before they had mobile phones) one of them asked me not to answer the phone when he was expecting one of his friends to call because I sounded 'too posh' ! On the other hand, my DH told me once he fell in love with my voice when he heard me talking in the corridor outside his studio when we worked together!

Gawd yes, not my accent as such, but my voice on a recording sounds 'flat' thats the only way i can describe it.??

As a former MFL teacher, I sympathise! I've never got used to it. But remember, you normally hear your own voice through your head, not as others hear it. The recording probably isn't totally accurate either. In retirement, I try not to let these things bother me too much. People must take me as they find me. Their opinion doesn't actually matter!

I can't stand my voice, I think I sound like a little boy with a cold. But in reality I'm a female old bag & I don't have a blocked nose or any nasal problems.

Hate my voice. Heard it on a recording at school and I sounded like a boy instead of a girl and had a decided Welsh intonation, nothing at all wrong with that but it was a suprise to me as I am from the English side of the border!

I'm a reader for two different local Talking Newspapers and, yes, I don't like the sound of my own voice!

A long time ago I left an answerphone message for OH but then heard it myself when I got home. I was a bit surprised to say the least.

I always sound quite gruff to my own ears but the voice on the answerphone sounded like a very shy 10 year old girl. I actually said to OH 'Who is this?' when the message started and he just looked a bit confused and said 'It's you'. When I heard the rest of the message I realised it was indeed me ? ?

I don't like my voice/accent and it definitely sounds worse on an answerphone and I cringe as it sounds like a cross between Hilda Ogden and Cilla Black with a touch of Irish!

Don’t like my accent much,but at least I never have to introduce myself on the phone everyone recognizes my voice,everything has a good side.

I think anyone who is bi-or multilingual prefers the sound of their recorded voice in one of their languages to the other or others. I know I do.

The other thing about it is that voice production goes on in our bodies - larynx, sinuses, nasal cavity and mouth so the sound we hear as after all our ears are in close proximity to where voice production is going on is different to what others hear.

Most people get a shock when they hear themselves on tape.

Not much we can do about it, although we can as OP does try to modify the bits we dislike most.

I actually like my voice, i cant believe my voice sounds like it does when I listen to it back, I'm always pleasantly surprised.

Ditto both of you.... loathe my voice and every photo of myself since I was 21 years of age!!!
