Flattered or annoyed

I saw a lady today in the street and really admired the jacket she was wearing. I wanted to tell her so and maybe ask where she’d bought it but of course I did no such thing. Have you ever felt like doing something similar, or has anyone ever approached you and said how much they like what you’re wearing. Would you be flattered or annoyed?

I often compliment strangers on what they are wearing or a hairstyle and ask where hey bought item or had hair done. People always respond in a good way. When I've been compliment or asked about what I'm wearing I feel flattered

I’ve been complimented before on a dress, hair and perfume, but not all at the same time! I was always very flattered, why on earth wouldn’t you be? I’ve also complimented other women, and men if I think something is particularly nice.

I was in a branch of JL and a woman came up and complimented me on what I was wearing. I thought it was lovely of her to take the time to say something positive.

Build up others, as long as it’s kind say it. It might be the only compliment someone has had in a while

I used to belong to a theatre group and wore a pink jacket on stage in a play. We invited a group of residents from a local care home to a preview and, just at a quiet pause in a scene, an extremely loud lady's voice from the audience said , "Oh doesn't she look lovely in that jacket". Of course I was flattered but it did make it quite difficult for me and my fellow actors to carry on without laughing.

It's nice to get compliments given to you. I get a lot about my red hair, although sometimes they ask if it is my real colour, yes it is. The grey's are still staying at bay for the time being.
I saw a lady one day in a lovely midi floral dress, it was beautiful, but as I didn't know her I wouldn't of asked her where she got it from. I came home and Googled and found it in M&S and now I have one hanging in my wardrobe smile

Not something I was wearing, but outfits I had made for my daughters, then 2 & 4. They were beige dresses with blue roses on them. I made little denim waistcoats which were laced up with metal eyelets, and denim sun bonnets, have to admit they did look stunning. Wherever we went there were ladies who asked me where I got them from - I would have made a fortune if I'd taken orders

Someone remarked on my hair a few years back, but I had just come from the hairdresser ??

JdotJ Wed 01-Sept-21 10:53:56

I've often told people I liked what they were wearing and each time they've said where it was from without me asking.

I think most people would be delighted with the compliment, but if someone approached me in public and said I didn't suit something, I would be offended by that, yet its just the flipside of the coin

glammanana Wed 01-Sept-21 10:52:27

I will always comment on a nice dress/shoes and will accept compliments & give back it boosts your day when someone says something complimentary about what you are wearing

Candelle Wed 01-Sept-21 10:50:51

Mr C sometimes can't help himself and compliments complete (usually female) strangers, most often if they have wacky coloured hair or a really smart outfit.

He means well and his comments are well received but I cringe!

Missismac Wed 01-Sept-21 10:50:34

I would definitely take it as a compliment and be delighted.

Philippa111 Wed 01-Sept-21 10:49:55

Who doesn’t want to think they’ve been admired for their ‘good taste’. Especially on a day when I don’t feel on top form it’s a real boost if someone says I look nice. I make a point of complimenting my family and friends .. it costs nothing and enriches all our lives.

I sat down at an outside table of a cafe a few weeks ago and the lady on next table lent over and said her and her friend lived the way I was dressed. She was surprised when I said most was bought on Ebay for a few pounds. Yes I have commented on clothes a person was wearing in the past. It brings a smile ?

Does anyone remember a boutique called Snob?
Back in about 1981 I was walking down the street and a woman rushed up to me to say how much she liked my trousers. I was in a bit of a rush so I absentmindedly just turned and said “Snob”
Unsurprisingly she looked very taken aback so I quickly added “it’s a shop”

TrendyNannie6 Wed 01-Sept-21 10:44:52

I do it all the time, if I see something being worn on someone, they have always been flattered and pleased with the compliment, I’ve had things said to me too, there’s no way I would feel annoyed, people have said oh you’ve made my day! Nothing wrong with complimenting.

I complimented the supermarket delivery guy on his purple hair.

He looked aghast, and was probably thinking "If this old lady likes it, I'm dyeing it a different colour tomorrow!"

Madwoman11 Wed 01-Sept-21 10:43:23

I'm always happy to give a compliment.

Shandy57 Wed 01-Sept-21 10:41:53

I asked the girl on the car park booth where she got her bag yesterday - five years ago at TK Maxx! Pointless asking older people normally!

Breda Wed 01-Sept-21 10:41:44

I have been the recipient of kind remarks and comments on many an occasion. It’s lovely to have someone say something kind and positive and I have always thanked those folk that have commented.

Awesomegranny Wed 01-Sept-21 10:41:20

I think if someone stopped specifically to say something I’d be flattered. This has happened a few times normally it’s leather boots, another time I was trying on some fluffy shoes in a shop and I was approached by husband of woman in the shop saying “you can walk around my house anytime in those” ?? I found that really funny, I decided though not to buy the shoes

runnerbean Wed 01-Sept-21 10:40:31

If someone asks me about my clothes (not often ;-) ) I used to be a bit irritated, but ok with that now.
