Flattered or annoyed

I saw a lady today in the street and really admired the jacket she was wearing. I wanted to tell her so and maybe ask where she’d bought it but of course I did no such thing. Have you ever felt like doing something similar, or has anyone ever approached you and said how much they like what you’re wearing. Would you be flattered or annoyed?

Flattered

I have often complimented other women on their clothes, but I never ask where they got them from.

I used to have a velvet coat, and more than once people stopped me and said how much they liked it. I was flattered.

I once told a woman in a restaurant that I liked her top, and she seemed delighted. I think we should do that sort of thing more often.

Last summer someone on the bus said she really liked my shoes (yellow loafer type) and asked where I’d got them. I had to tell her I’d had them for at least four years!

I would have said something. A lady behind me at an Asda checkout a couple of years age admired my boots ‘thank you, Sainsbury’s £30’was my reply, I still wear them now.

I’ve done that often, people never mind. Been done to me too.

BlueBelle Tue 31-Aug-21 22:22:25

I don’t see why you wouldn’t I have definitely told people if I love things they are wearing why not
I wore some dungarees last week and I was a bit concerned I was too old but a lady made my day when she said I love your dungarees they look great on you I ve also been asked who my hairdresser is as my hair looks good They are wonderful compliments and you walk away with a spring in your steps
I believe we need to do it more

I complimented a young woman on her beautiful dress yesterday and she was delighted because she said she'd been unsure as to whether it really suited her or not. I've also complimented people on their hair, particularly if it's a funky colour or cut. I've received several compliments from people regarding a particular skirt I used to wear. Pity I got too fat to fit in it.

I would be flattered. I have also complimented other women on what they were wearing. I think it’s a really nice thing to do or receive. I have never come across anyone who was offended and neither would I be.

Sadly I read now that any key nd of personal comment is inappropriate now especially in the work situation. Sad because I always thought a sincere compliment would be welcome but it seems today's culture regards personal compliments as a judgment. Very sad.

Once when I was in my 30s, I was out in the summer wearing a red cotton skirt, a beige top with a red collar, and red canvas beach shoes. An elderly lady came up to me and said "You look so lovely with your red skirt and collar and red shoes, it's lovely, lovely, lovely!" It really seemed to delight her to see me, despite the fact that the shoes were in holes with my toe poking out of one!
I have sometimes give, or received, positive comments when trying on, say, a jacket in a shop.

Yes, I have complemented people, and have only ever had a nice response.

I too compliment people and have always ever been met with delight. I have a few myself and they made my day

Redhead56 Tue 31-Aug-21 22:55:22

I have been complimented by male and female and I have complimented people no problem.

Ladyleftfieldlover Tue 31-Aug-21 22:58:13

I’ve had compliments on my clothes and my hair from complete strangers. I have a very unusual winter coat which gets many compliments. Someone admired my purse just the other day. Why would I be annoyed?

Might that just be a nastyrumour put out by the tabloids!?

BlueBelle Tue 31-Aug-21 23:01:42

bigbertha seems you’re the only one bothered by this We don’t have to follow trends that don’t seem right to us
I shall continue to complement people and hope that I keep getting them too

I’m delighted to receive compliments and happy to give them. Sometimes a compliment doesn’t just make the recipient feel good, but it can be very useful. I admired a lady’s hair and asked where she’d had it done. She mentioned a salon I’d never been to, but now I’m a regular. Keep complimenting!

I have complimented people and been complimented.

On a very hot day, I was in town in a quiet street and I heard one lady say to another, 'Doesn't that lady look beautifully cool' looking at me. 'yes' said the other 'but that dress looks very expensive.' It was a nice dress, but I had bought it in a french supermarket, a bit like Sainsbury's and Tu, and it had cost me about £30.

Always will compliment and happy to receive one too.
Never ask about prices though.

I don’t really believe that’s true.

Oh Streaky I’m always admiring clothes or jewellery on others and if I really like it I tell them so. I read once you’re meant to say thank you instead of explaining where you got it from just to accept it as a compliment. I’ve remembered that for years and years now.

I usually find I'm admiring facemasks these days!
And yes I now know where to find the really nice ones and how much they cost and no they're not homemade....
I compliment people about all sorts of things,: Haircuts, shoes, bags, crafting ability. As I get older I find it just comes out of my mouth grin
My MiL makes personal comments all the time which are sometimes inappropriate.
In answer to your question. I would be flattered and surprised!.

I think it depends compliments on clothes are fine, but in my forties I lost quite a bit of weight and people I vaguely knew would rush up to me and say how great I looked, after a while it made me uncomfortable.
