E10 petrol

It depends on your car. If you Google ‘can my car use E10 petrol?’ it will give you more information but, it’s mostly older cars that are affected. I think over ten years old.

Gov uk will tell you if your vehicle is compatible.. most are.. just click on manufacturer.

It probably won't make any difference to you at all travelsafar. Instead of the 5% renewable ethanol that is in our petrol right now, the proportion will be 10%. You can check what it means for your car on the government website, but if the car is less than 18 years old, they said on the news last night that it will be fine.

I don’t think there is such a thing as “leaded” is there?
I understand some classic and vintage cars and some pre 2000 will not be able to run on E10
You can check online by putting in your car manufacturer
E.g, Ford
E10 is cleared for use in all petrol driven Ford models sold in Europe since 1992 excluding
Ford Mondeo 1.8 SCI from 2003 to 2007.This model and Ford models sold before 1992 should continue to use E5

Your car handbook will also tell you which fuel can be used. My Honda Jazz is from 2011, the cut-off age for some makes, but along with several other manufacturers these and older models can use E10. Most petrol stations will continue to sell the E5 so there is no need to worry.

i filled up my sons 19 yo car up with it this morning <gulp> but it said on the website it was only older larger cars affected in his make of car

you cannot assume the date of manufacture from the reg mark. some vehicles are stored before being sold.
check the reg document for year of manufacture.
with some vehicles, older ones may be able to take the new fuel, whereas some later years cannot, eg VW touran.
if it is older or you are unsure, you can used super unleaded petrol, available in most places; but it's more expensive.

I filled up with E10 on Monday. I drive a 12 year old Volvo, no problems so far. I checked the Gov. website and all Volvos apart from one model of S40 are OK.

I think it is a problem for lawnmowers etc. Our local petrol station only had E10 and diesel.

Like I said above, E10 has 10% renewable ethanol instead of the 5% we had before. So if its a mix in the tank, it will be between 5% and 10% and so it will work fine.

My MG ZT sports car which I bought cheap 16 years ago is one of those it is not recommended for. I hardly use it but it has sentimental value connected to my ds who died. It’s not done 10,000 miles yet. Not all garages will have E5 so hope there is one near me. Interesting Welbeck reckons you can use super unleaded. I will have to check that out.

If your can’t use the new E10 petrol then you can still use premium grade 97+ octane petrol which only has 5% ethanol. As a point of interest Algeria, as last country in the world, stopped selling leaded petrol in July this yesr

Mine should be OK, then, less than 3 years old.
Dh’s car is diesel though - bought in the days when they were still saying that diesel was less polluting than petrol. Which isn’t all that long ago - mind you diesels do often go on for ever, so from that POV - scrapping and buying new…

There is a news item on upday about the 10 cars that are not good for E10.
All BMW cars are compatable.Ford after 1992.the Golf f fsi and the Vauxhall Zafira 2.2 may not be.
The best advice is to go to gov uk/check-vehicle-e10-petrol.

My clio is 19 years old and its not on the list so im pleased.

I have just filled mine up, it's only 5 years old, however am too scared to look st list now

It really isn’t anything to worry about especially with a 5 year old car.
If your car is pre-2000 on the other hand, it may well not be compatible

Super-unleaded is E5 and was clearly markedly such at the Shell garage where I filled up this afternoon.
