Famous people that you’ve met: What were they like?

We sat and had a drink in the bar where Oliver Reed fell off his perch (but not on that day).

I served Prince Michael of Kent when he came into the shop where I worked and asked me to recommend a bottle of wine for a picnic. He was very nice. I chose a white one, German of course !

Ive seen Alan Rickman in a post office didnt talk to him though he was very handsome.
Waved at Eddie Izzard and he/she waved back.
Derek Guylar from please sir he was really lovely.
Prince Phillip he was really funny in a nice way.

I remembered someone else - Billy Connelly!
He was just as funny off-stage as on!

I`ve only met 2 famous people. William G Stewart, the first host of Fifteen-to-One, was very nice, nowhere near as forbidding as he seemed onscreen. The other one was Cyril Smith MP, but he wasn`t an MP then, he was a local councillor, and came to all our school dos, 2 chairs were always placed in the centre of the front row for him, as he was a bit overweight. He was always really nice, but later publicity looks as if we were misled.

Another one I’ve remembered is my local MP, (although he was only famous in this area!). He came to a charity event I’d organised and we discussed pregnancy and maternity bras. ?

I met the Queen Mother and she was lovely, George Clooney, very much ‘don’t you know who I am?’ type.
Also Stacey from Gavin and Stacey who was really sweet.

I was a big fan of Starsky & Hutch back in the day, particularly David Soul. I met him briefly once. He was lovely.

John Kettley the weatherman,Dana the singer, PC Tony Stamp from the Bill,and Prince Harry (pre Megan days). All very nice.

I met Susan George in the early sixties in Malta she was filming. In the football world, Frank Lampard senior and Harry Rednapp.

Did a lot of hotel work in the 1990s & met a lot of well known people..no horror stories but still remember Jean Alexander ...who played Hilda Ogden,... what a lovely person, calm, humble... exuding an almost spiritual aura...can even remember what she was wearing...she made me feel good just by her presence, nothing like her screen character...

Some people do become very overcome when they meet the famous, especially Royalty. I mentioned before the POW coming to my workplace. The librarian, I thought a Republican lady, was quite moved and performed a rather strange curtsy in her trouser suit.

It was over 40 years ago I was at a swing park with my daughter, there was another lady there with her son, she was Tessa Wyatt, then Tony Blackburn's wife. I made general chat about the children, including would her son like to go on the see saw with my daughter - she replied "yes, that would be lovely". The children played for a short while, then they left. A group of ladies who had been sitting nearby came to me and asked - "Do you know who you were talking to?" I said "Yes, it was a mother with her son!"

Charlie Watts - about 18 years ago we bought a horse off his wife, Shirley. Back then Mrs Watts held “Open Days”, and having bought “Nomad” from her we were invited to a couple of these. The Stud and associated facilities were unbelievable.
High spot of the first visit (for me) was the Afternoon Tea - amongst the staff waiting at table was Charlie in a beautiful 3 piece tweed suit and cravat. I don’t think there are that many of us who have been served sandwiches and fancy cakes by the guy who regarded his membership of the Rolling Stones as just the day job. Charlie was just quiet and courteous - mucking in and making sure Shirley’s guests were adequately fed and watered. One word - a Gentleman.

When I worked for EMI in the 70s Steppenwolf came wandering into our office one day wanting to know if we could give them any drugs. The answer was no so they wandered away again.

I had a nice chat with Paterson Joseph one quiet Sunday afternoon on Euston Station. Unfortunately having accosted him I had brain freeze and couldn’t recall what I had seen him in.
He's now a submarine captain, Elrel! (Vigil, on tv)

The problem is, I would probably look at someone and ask "Don't I know you from somewhere?"

I have met a few authors mostly at book signings.Angela Carter was lovely, and encouraging to a would-be author. Jilly Cooper was very friendly and gave me a hug. Isaac Asimov gave me a kiss at a SciFi event. later I met his very pleasant wife and daughter who were visiting friends of mine. Ian Botham looked a bit lonely in WH Smith’s so I stopped for a chat, warm and friendly although I knew little of cricket and wasn’t buying his book.

Sally Phillips is a lovely person, as is Vicki Michelle. I won a competition to have lunch cooked by Nigel Slater, I was shy but still haven’t stopped telling everyone what a a treat it was. Very down to earth and, of course, a great cook.

During his recent one man show Sir Ian McKellen hurled a signed banana into the theatre and my lap! I had a nice chat with Paterson Joseph one quiet Sunday afternoon on Euston Station. My teen idols were Tommy Steele and Adam Faith, years later on different occasions I was in the same room but didn’t have the courage to speak to either. I also didn’t go to a gig with Dave, Dee, Dozie etc. when they very courteously invited me along. Lost opportunities!

I have no memory of a man who admired my eyes on Weston-super-Mare promenade 60 years ago, I was only a few months old, he was His Excellency Haile Selassie.

I think I've mentioned this before - my late FIL worked in London many years ago and while driving down a narrow street he came bumper to bumper with Katie Boyle. She charmingly called out to him, "I think I'd better reverse," she did so do for quite a distance and as he passed and waved his thanks she gave him the cheeriest smile. He was always a little bit in love with her after that.

When I was a teenager our school choir appeared on Cliff Richard's Sunday evening show. We went to London to record it so we met him at rehearsal and the show it self. He was very friendly and down to earth. Having lunch in the BBC canteen we met lots of other well known faces. Rolf Harris approached me and asked me to sit with him and sing to him! In retrospect I am glad I was too shy and declined! One of my friends accepted his invitation but I don't think anything untoward happened. I sat with the cast of a sit-com that was on at the time but can't remember any of their names. Everyone seemed very normal.
