I agree about motorway service service stations Aveline - I was at one in Leicester a couple of weeks ago, I think its scarred me for life. I was mortified to think that people from other countries would think that was normal.

I think the Gloucester services on the M5 are good. Clean, decent food, nice shop, clean toilets with mens, womens and family toilets. Nice green area.

I'm not planning on doing a 100 drive to visit them but if I am on the M5 I stop there.

Thank goodness we’re all different. Shame about Egypt - was continuously hassled at the Temples on a Nile cruise. However I love New York. Here - didn’t like Great Yarmouth, but fond of Northallerton and often pop down for a coffee and Fat Rascal at a well known Tea Room.

Tunisia, I bought a holiday off someone from work and the whole thing was grim. Terrible hotel with awful food, the weather was windy and sand blowing in your face all the time.
Hassled none stop and the hotel was just by the mosque so were woken at the crack of dawn by the call to prayer.
There was a rubbish dump near the hotel and I thought there was a man asleep on it. 24 hrs later I realised it was a body that had been left there.
To cap it all on the final day dressed and ready for the airport, someone emptied a bucket of urine all over me from a flat I was walking past.
Never again.

Bulgaria. It's the only place I've offered to pay double for a flight to get out of early.

Tenerife

The Lincolnshire Wolds are beautiful Minimoon some lovely villages and beauty spots.

I used to live in Bridlington when I was young and went back a few years ago. I was very disappointed to find it dirty and uncared for.

Dubai, all totally false and with a ghastly airport.

theworriedwell I have lovely childhood memories of Weston (aka Birmingham by the Sea) too.
That’s where we went with my maternal Grandparents in the 70s. Really special times.
We then went more upmarket, (in the upwardly mobile 80s ) and swapped to Sidmouth and Falmouth.

We used to go in the 50s. Coach journey down the A38, murder in the summer particularly with a mother and a sibling who were travel sick.

Happy days.

Exactly - I'm sure there will be gransnetters who live in Blackpool, for example. I've no problem telling people why I don't like the place. It's be a boring old world if we all liked the same things - or places.

I wouldn’t go back to be Egypt. I know it well because OH worked there for 3 years and I stayed out there in my holidays. Constant hassle, rude remarks etc. I knew a beautiful blonde Finnish woman who couldn’t take the staring and the touching any more and went back to Finland. I would go back to Rome even though we were robbed twice! If OH hadn’t had his work American Express card we would have been scuppered.

I also have childhood memories of Weston and like to visit, brings back memories of walking along holding my dad's hand. He died when I was a child so those memories are precious.

I loved Rome and despite the fact that my daughter was walking along with her bag open and her purse on top we didn't have anything stolen, a nice man in the market tried to explain to her that she needed to keep things safe in that area.

We managed to have some nice meals quite reasonably, follow local working people at lunchtime, the places might not look very upmarket but the food was good and cheap.

Don't buy an icecream though, that could bankrupt you.

The Gambia. Too much hassle and British lady pensioners go for the young men! I was sitting quietly by myself reading and a security guard approached me and asked suggestively 'are you alone?' I was quick to tell him that my husband would be back soon.

Morocco went there in the late 70s could not get away quick enough. Paris I have been there a few times to see if there is anything I like about it but no there isn’t.

I LOVE Ibiza - away from the 'party island' places around San Antonio it is as beautiful as any of the other Balearic Islands. We were about to book to go there early last year when all the covid stuff started

It's funny how we all have different experiences - I've been to Turkey many times and never had any problems. Istanbul is one of my favourite cities.

Same here. We usually holiday in Turkey twice a year and have done for the past 15 years or so. I'm guessing Daisytwoshoes was in one particular resort, and if so, it's a shame to dismiss an entire country based on that one experience. Turkey is such a vast, fascinating country with so much to see and do. Istanbul is probably my second favourite city ever - after my own, Edinburgh.
