Our dog spends some time on our bed but not in it. He sleeps in his own bed in the hallway next to our bedroom from 11.pm and usually re-joins us between 5 & 7.am. If it's hot he'll lie on the floor at the foot of the bed and if it's cold he's in the middle of us & we're on the outside edges ? When we got our first dog many years ago I was scared of dogs & I said she couldn't get on our bed at all, but she quickly won me over & that didn't last long. For me the magic cuddles of a snuggly doggy that loves you just can't be beaten.

Dogs on beds
(113 Posts)I know I shouldn't have when i got her last year but I did and now she's a nearly 18 month old who has more bed than me. She has her three walks a day and I sometimes hire the freedom field so she has of leash time. I talk to her and we play in the garden. She gives me her paw if she wants a treat and barks at the hoover still. She's a strong girlie but trys to sit on my lap or acooss me and loves soft toy play time and I love her.
My friend said she shouldn't be in the bed and I'm too close to her and she should be a dog, not spoken to like a human.
I'm not the only one surely ?
Neen although I don’t share your view I would not have criticised you as your friend did.
Your dog, your house, your rules. Having said that I would never feel comfortable with any animal in my bed (except, maybe some years ago, a few male human ones I can think of!)
Dirty paws and shedding hair are not welcome, no matter how loved the pet may be, and none of them have ever complained.
When I had dogs they were never allowed upstairs but one would go and hide under the bed on fireworks night.
Neen. It's your dog, your bed and your decision. It's neither hurting or affecting anyone else. It's something you do and you and your dog enjoy being close. Personally, it's not for me, I practise good sleep hygiene and the only critters who might share my bed are spiders who have an uncanny knack of crawling into my bed after the lights go out.
We let our first Lab share our bed as a puppy. As he grew bigger though, there wasn't room for us all, so he decided it would be best if we slept elsewhere. We had to spoil his vision of the future and put him in a bed outside. He soon adapted and we have since then not let any of the others on our bed. Nothing to do with germs and hygiene. As I have said before, children living with pets have a better developed immune system. Each to their own I think, not anyone else's business.
Neen is your dog a Saluki or Saluki cross? Hounds are often referred to as ‘Velcro’ dogs for good reason. My lovely boy is allowed on top of our bed for the last hour or so before we get up. Yes, it’s probably not very hygienic but our house, our rules. Your dog is lovely, this is my boy…
Whoops, also random photo too… ?
I haven’t owned a dog since my AC were small and have never had a cat. Our dog slept in his basket in the kitchen which is a warm and spacious room. He never came upstairs or went on chairs or sofas. Nevertheless he was a happy and much loved dog. I like to keep my furniture and carpets as nice as possible and wouldn’t want the expense of buying new ones. We used to have our DSs dog sometimes but had to stop. It was lovely having him with us but he kept coming upstairs and jumping on the beds.
I have a lovely little dog who is great company, especially as I live alone. We spend most of our time together and I chat away to her. I rescued her and from the first night she stayed on her own bed and has done so ever since. I'm glad though as I prefer her to stay off my bed, I've all white bedding for a start. My sister's little dog shares her bed and heads up a couple of hours before her. Its your dog and your rules so you do as you please, she's lucky to have a caring owner like you Neen
People in the north used to keep whippets for many reasons ( hunting, racing etc) but I believe one reason was they slept with the children and kept them warm ( they are heat seeking missiles). I would never have allowed my spaniels on or in the bed and I don’t think they would have wanted to be there anyway but whippets assume that beds and duvets were created specifically for them. They’re so clean and un smelly and, once they’re asleep they usually won’t move for 12 hours.
There was a great birthday card I sent more than once - a Punch cartoon IIRC - woman showing a guest their room - bed strewn with half a dozen dogs. ‘It’s gone a little chilly so I’ve put an extra dog on your bed.’ ?
Of course, dogs are part of the family. Our dogs have always been allowed on the bed when we were awake. As soon as we switched off the light, the dogs hopped off and went to sleep in their own beds. But, no dogs allowed on the couch. Their beds were in the lounge, so had their place to spread out alongside their humans.
Mamma66 oh your boy is gorgeous. Yes Rana is a saluki. She's funny and quite a character to say the least ha .
I’m a cat person - but pets on beds is what we are talking about, strangely, after being cat-less for 15 years my new kitty has a reserved place on my bed. Previously my cats weren’t allowed anywhere but on the floor!
They're my dogs and it's my bed and I'll do what the hell I like
Neen Your dog is just beautiful! Enjoy your lives together in whatever ways suit you both. It is nothing to do with anyone else.
Our dog (a Springer) sleeps in our bedroom, sometimes on the bed if it's very cold. He has his own raised bed at the end of our bed, or he may choose to sleep on the landing or in the bathroom in hot weather. Like any lively active dog he gets smelly so he's bathed every 2 or 3 weeks, and treated for worms and fleas throughout the year, so we have no concerns about hygiene issues. Yes, he sheds hair (everywhere), but we can live with that just for the pleasure and fun of having him in our lives.
Neen, Rana is stunning. They are such funny, quirky characters aren’t they? Our boy is the most gentle and loving creature, but he is quietly naughty in a mist unassuming way. He also makes us roar with laughter. Maurice very rarely barks but is extremely vocal with his rooing and whinging ?
He’s gorgeous!
No pets on beds or furniture for me thanks, though I did have a tank of stick insects on my bedside table at one time. My DDs both allow their pets on the bed. Their house, their choice.
Totally with you OP, my ancient rescue has shared my bed for 10 years (I’m single) and it’s just the norm for me. I’m a very clean person and don’t appear to have caught anything nasty off him! You do what you want and enjoy your lovely dog. They are the best companions and get us out and about which is really important as we age.
I've had many rescue dogs, some trained to never go upstairs or on the furniture, others straight in the beds!
One never set foot on the lawn - coming from a house where even the children weren't allowed on the grass - and (no surprise) the owner had a complete breakdown.
My present little JRT is always beside me, day and night - (in the bed, of course) and a lovely little companion.
Once, we left a relative looking after the four kids and actually went out for the day. We returned to find her horrified that the dog had been on the beds - so she'd stripped them all and put everything on to wash.
She said she couldn't find our spare bedding. We didn't really have much - as I never washed it all at once!
that made me smile Hetty58 I love JRs and still miss our boy. Have you any pics ?
