Bad tempered people and petrol queues.

Whilst sat in the forecourt of the petrol station, waiting to fill up, we've had 3 different people come up to the open window to hurl abuse at us! Why?

"F**** ridiculous, F**** idiot" said one accompanied with a few hand gestures.
Which to be honest I couldn't help but laugh out loud at, out of shock. At first I didn't realise he was meaning us.
Until he came up to the window (now closed) and said it again.

Then a women came along side and said could we move as she needed to get petrol? I pointed out there were bollards stopping anyone from entering the garage as the tanker was filling the pumps.
To which she said she was an off duty nurse and shouldn't have to waste her time queueing, so could we move?
I pointed out we were jammed in by her car behind, and the bollards in front.
Plus, she was second in the queue, so sorry but we were all in the same boat!!
She glared for a few seconds then stomped off.

A couple thought it was their prerogative to come up to the passenger window to enlighten us, that if we thought we were going to get any petrol we would be lucky, (even though they could clearly see the tanker delivering fuel for themselves).
Said we should have topped up earlier, then left clearly enjoying their clever repartee, and giggling at our perceived misfortune.

It was a sunny day and lots of people were out and about, and should have been enjoying themselves. Clearly not but why the open hostility?
Have I missed something?

BTW we have filled up there before, and we were on our normal shopping routine.

Personally I think these Petrol station should employ marshalls who are permitted to question those in the queue and see how much juice their vehicle actualluy contains. I its more than one third full they should be asked to leave the queue unless they can prove they need the tank full NOW1

Can you imagine how much that action would push the level of anxiety and aggression up Gwen?
Who would do that job?
Plus how many more demonstrations, blocking more roads would this action lead to?

Free yoga and meditation lessons to chill every one out is my suggestion! (Joke)??

I drove past 3 local petrol stations and all were open with only 2 having a short queue. Looking better.

Gwen under no circumstances should Marshall's check how much fuel you have in the tank. A male employee put his head in my car and asked how much fuel I had, I found him intrusive. He was lucky I did not tell him to do one.
I have to work 3 full days a week and I collect my Grandson from School out of my area and not on a bus route. Why I am getting fuel is/was none of his business. I filled up my tank, and yes I did only have a little left, paid and left.
I am fed up with people condemning others then doing the same themselves.
I have made no unnecessary journeys and I am trying to make this tank last.

The EU has freedom of movement so people can move from France say, and get a job in Spain. Lorries can drive from one country to another and apparently conditions for drivers are much better than here. I am afraid the rest of the world can’t understand what we are playing at. It seems N Ireland have well stocked supermarkets and plenty of petrol. However, I read somewhere today though that Johnson wants to bring NI back into line with the rest of the UK. Five years on from the Brexit vote and a lot of what the Remainers warned would happen, is happening. COVID hasn’t helped, but it should not be blamed entirely by our atrocious government. They have had 11 years to sort things out.

I wish people would stop blaming this on Brexit. If you bother to look outside of the UK instead of listening to MSM, many other countries also have shortages of truck drivers.

And no issues with fuel food supply.

Why do you think that is?

effalump Sat 02-Oct-21 10:17:37

I wish people would stop blaming this on Brexit. If you bother to look outside of the UK instead of listening to MSM, many other countries also have shortages of truck drivers. In fact the shortage in the UK was confined to the south east until the MSM decided to make it sound like armgeddon which resulted in everyone panicking and rushing to fill up/top up their tanks which then resulted in petrol stations running out.

In Europe, Spain, Italy, Germany, France, Poland, Romania etc..they are not having to queue at petrol pumps and nor do they have food shortages in the supermarkets. This government could not run a chimps tea party. Grant S.....S!...knew this was going to happen over 12 months ago but he just sat there in his office without intervening and twiddled his thumbs and hoped for the best! Yes people are angry but they should direct their anger at this incompetent bunch of clowns...the Tory government. Worse is still to come i fear with more food shortages after November.

Taliya Fri 01-Oct-21 19:55:04

I think people have had enough and have short fuses at the moment. Many people did not vote for this shower...the Conservatives nor for Brexit but are suffering because of the incompetent Tories and the results of not managing the results of Brexit on the economy which any child could have planned for or worked out. Its a pity this anger is not directed at No 10 and the buffoons in power. Sadly, this petrol crisis is causing anxiety and anguish to many who may be leading difficult lives anyway and this petrol crisis is sending many people over the edge and losing their tempers. I don't blame them. All the while Grant S.....S!.. is gormlessly virtually smiling in interviews and blaming everyone but him and his dept for this crisis...typical Tory!

In my neck of the woods, it appears to be a 5-hour wait if there is a petrol station open. One or two punters are ordering takeaways! The vast majority of petrol stations around here are closed-thank God I no longer work.

JaneJudge Thu 30-Sept-21 13:19:43

They are still opening and closing and queuing here and arguing about it on facebook. I wanted to wait until it all died down before I filled up but I think I am going to have to go and queue to fill my daughter's car up after all and join in with the madness as her care staff need it. It;s a bloody nightmare isn't it?

Namsnanny Thu 30-Sept-21 13:06:07

Well that was the point of the op Alegrias1
Where is the aggression coming from?

Alegrias1 Thu 30-Sept-21 12:57:14

I went to Tesco this morning, no queues, all pumps in were working, didn't fill up because I don't need it. I'm not saying that to deny the issue or be holier than thou, just an observation.

What kind of world are we living in when Newatthis feels it necessary to defend herself for filling up her car with fuel?

Newatthis Thu 30-Sept-21 10:26:01

Pulled up at a petrol station yesterday, 5 cars in front, filled car in 5 minutes. Before I get slated I am a key worker so I could go and do my job with any problem.

Alegrias1 Thu 30-Sept-21 10:12:16

As for dim haulage managers - how insulting and ignorant.

Alegrias1 Thu 30-Sept-21 10:11:37

And for all you people blaming Brexit, does that answer the question of why there are HGV driver shortages all over Europe?

In case you can't see the small print - it says they are not fighting on the forecourts in France.

Who shall we blame then?

HannahLoisLuke Thu 30-Sept-21 10:00:44

montymops

I rather blame the managers of road haulage industry for not making good enough plans for the expected shortfall in HGV drivers after Brexit. Were they asleep? There has been plenty of time to train and employ new drivers. The government doesn’t run everything- nor should it!

Agree with you that the government, of any stripe can’t be blamed for everything. Greedy people dim haulage managers but let’s not forget the DVLA who have been “working from home” these last eighteen months and not processing the thousands of applications for HGV licences. I heard a manager on the radio talking about the 600 phone calls he’d made to them over the last several months trying to get prospective new drivers licences issued as well as existing drivers licences renewed.
And for all you people blaming Brexit, does that answer the question of why there are HGV driver shortages all over Europe?

Pammie1 Thu 30-Sept-21 09:03:04

@LindaPat. I agree with you - it does seem to be worse in some areas than others. I had a similar experience to you -we’re in the North West. I was almost driving on fumes and tried three local petrol stations over the weekend. Two were dry and the queue at our Tesco station was all the way back to the main road, and wrapped around a roundabout quarter of a mile away !! I gave up and came home. I tried our Morrisons station on Monday morning and it was business as usual - no queues and all the pumps working. The checkout operator said that the police had intervened over the weekend as drivers were blocking the narrow approach road and there had been a fight between two drivers on the forecourt.

The fuel supply chain seems to be better for the supermarkets - our local petrol stations are BP and Shell, and they’re still closed.
