Ok so you're sat in a cafe, sipping your tea/coffee, people watching. So a couple opposite me chat for a while then he gets his newspaper out and she retrieves her phone from her bag. I watch the happenings and think why does it look acceptable to have your head burried in a newspaper but not a phone ? ( thats my take on the matter )

Phones vs newspapers? Hmm. No contest as far as I am concerned. He’s like me, and she is tech, like my dh. At least they had a little chat before they buried their heads in their chosen media.
Maybe, like us, they have been married over 50 years and it’s all been said. grin

Strange really. Due to a Scottish Protestant upbringing, self indulgence can be hard ( although I am working on it!). For example, I can happily sit down and read the newspaper (educational), but feel dreadfully guilty just sitting reading a book for pleasure.

Maybe she was making their fortune trading in Bitcoin while he was reading the paper? grin

Either looks acceptable to me. Head in a book would be fine too.

I wonder what the next innovation that people object to will be?

PS My newspaper is on my phone. Very handy when waiting for a bus.

Thank you for your replies, maybe it me who viewed it with judgemental eyes, my OH comments about me being on my phone ( he is not savvy on techno ) and i say time and time again that i am only doing what i would do with a book ( kindle)/ newspaper ( daily mail ) etc etc .....

Yes why do we feel guilty reading a book GillT I always think I should be doing some domestic chore instead of 'just another chapter ' .

It's strange isn't it. I always feel as if I have to "earn" an hour with a book. I think we need to be easier on ourselves grin

In my family, you felt guilty if you weren’t reading a book! Being well-read was highly valued.

Often makes me smile when my friends and family pooh pooh television watching and comment that they much prefer a book and it's usually said with a degree of superiority. Think I'm

Think it's just one further nail in my coffin that I'm letting the telly do the entertaining much of the time. Never would have believed this move even a couple of years ago. Obviously my laziness knows no bounds!

I watch lots of television,, too. It’s marginally less effort than reading.
