Steve Coogan to take the leading roll in BBC's drama about Jimmy Saville.

What do you think of that?

* Title and opening post edited by GNHQ (please see OP's subsequent posts)

I would really like to listen to his music again, but have been assured this is really not the done thing.

Aveline Thu 30-Sept-21 19:43:49

I loved Gary Glitter too sad

MissAdventure Thu 30-Sept-21 19:43:03

There again, though, I loved Gary Glitter. confused

MissAdventure Thu 30-Sept-21 19:41:10

I must say, I always felt slightly repulsed by him, even as a child.
I just assumed it was the look of him I disliked; the clothes and hair.

theworriedwell Thu 30-Sept-21 19:35:13

I can never understand how popular he was years ago but now everyone reckons they always knew, felt he was a wrong'un or whatever.

MissAdventure Thu 30-Sept-21 19:06:13

I only recently watched one about Beverley Allitt (?)
I had always imagined her as a somewhat tragic figure, but it seems she was a power hungry, narcissistic person.

Aveline Thu 30-Sept-21 19:02:50

I found the documentary series on Harold Shipman very interesting. Amazing that he got away with it for so long. Most likely the UK's worst serial killer. If only he hadn't died in prison so quickly we might have found out why he actually did it.

MissAdventure Thu 30-Sept-21 19:00:22

Well put, Bluebelle.
You nearly always say what I'm trying to when I'm waffling on!

labazsisslowlygoingmad Thu 30-Sept-21 18:59:40

There are other predators criminals etc being made programmes and films of for instance Fred West who took his own life and he caused much anguish to a lot of people in the area I used to live. Many people including my own parents knew him well. There is no one forcing you to watch if you don't want to watch it don't but I think that people need to know about these people maybe to learn the signs to stop it happening again, we can but hope

BlueBelle Thu 30-Sept-21 18:57:59

Exactly Sodapop if these awful awful things are always kept out of the viewers eyeline how will things like this ever be challenged, surely by seeing this, it will alert people to clues, little pointers, and bigger signposts, surely it will encourage people to think what they would have done or do if they saw these things happening, and perhaps make them more aware in any future situations
I don’t for one minute think it will be done to excuse or sweep under the carpet but to educate and bring clues to everyone’s view, making it easier to see through abusers of which there are many around I think Steve Coogan has not gone into this lightly

MissAdventure Thu 30-Sept-21 18:49:06

He lived in a cottage in Scotland, where my ex was, and there was not one person that liked him, or his chauffeur, who they said was just as creepy.

Visgir1 Thu 30-Sept-21 18:47:06

Should be well done Steve Coogan wouldn't get involved otherwise, reckon, hope worts and all?
I met Saville once he sat next to me on a family day on a War Ship..
He made my skin craw, weird man. I also worked with someone who had worked in Leeds General. He was always hanging around there, they too (on the shop floor) couldn't stand him, they referred to him 'Now then now then', when seen, they headed off in opposite direction so he wouldn't talk to them.
Yuck!

MissAdventure Thu 30-Sept-21 18:40:43

I would have imagined they would need consent, and those who don't will simply be made anonymous for the programme.

LauraNorder Thu 30-Sept-21 18:40:02

I apologised straight away Jane. I was only on page one when I left it open. I wouldn’t have said pile on otherwise. Genuine mistake.

sodapop Thu 30-Sept-21 18:39:33

It is quite some time now since the crimes of Savile were exposed. I think the story needs to be told to raise awareness etc. A similar thing happened with Couzens people knew he was a sexual predator but did nothing. I think Coogan will do a good job of portraying this evil character. I will watch at least at first to see how it unfolds.

Galaxy Thu 30-Sept-21 18:38:58

hmmGot this wrong

Galaxy Thu 30-Sept-21 18:38:36

As far as I am aware a number of the victims collaborated with or were consulted about the production, have I hit this wrong .

Allsorts Thu 30-Sept-21 18:36:28

I won’t be watching, he always made my skin creep, can’t understand why he was ever left alone with babies and children. He was a vile person and why they make a programme about him must be so upsetting for victims families.

MissAdventure Thu 30-Sept-21 18:36:05

I would imagine that some of his victims would be happy to see the depths of his depravity exposed on tv, particularly as they were accused of being attention seekers or money grabbers by some.

JaneJudge Thu 30-Sept-21 18:33:56

No one was piling on and GNHQ altered the title and the OP came back and apologised and the discussion has progressed smile

I can't even remembered what she said about the play Fanny fwiw. confused I just remember her opening and closing her mouth

Shandy57 Thu 30-Sept-21 18:33:48

What a terrible, terrible idea. No-one wants to be reminded of this disgusting deviant.

My memories of working at the BBC are haunted because of his actions. I used to open the Jim'll Fix It letters as overtime, and dread to think what happened to the kids I put on the interview pile.

LauraNorder Thu 30-Sept-21 18:32:44

Sorry I took so long reading, left the thread open while I answered the phone, it had moved on by the time I returned.

LauraNorder Thu 30-Sept-21 18:30:42

So the OP made a mistake with her words. We all make mistakes. Let’s not have a pile on.
The subject is pretty emotive. I hate the idea of watching but agree we shouldn’t be allowed to forget so that we learn from the worst of history.

MissAdventure Thu 30-Sept-21 18:27:20

love0c

All this will show is just how many people 'knew' about him but nothing was done. Believe me, I know!

I'm really interested in this comment; not meant as a criticism at all, but I have long suspected that the only possible way this could have been happening is by unspoken complicity by others.
Or, perhaps, saville was a genius at hiding in plain sight.

Sara1954 Thu 30-Sept-21 18:20:50

Like a lot of things, you look back and wonder how on earth it could have happened, were people really taken in by him? Or was it easier to turn a blind eye?

I think it probably should be made, but I doubt I’ll watch it.
