Steve Coogan to take the leading roll in BBC's drama about Jimmy Saville.

What do you think of that?

* Title and opening post edited by GNHQ (please see OP's subsequent posts)

Personally I think it is disgusting and I hope it gets scrapped before it is made.

Alegrias1 Thu 30-Sept-21 13:12:32

Its not a flaming tribute!

Charleygirl5 Thu 30-Sept-21 13:15:11

I will not be watching it. They really are scraping the barrel.

Grandmadinosaur Thu 30-Sept-21 13:15:16

The thought of it makes me shudder. I can think of much better uses of BBC resources.

JaneJudge Thu 30-Sept-21 13:15:18

There is some information here

lavenderzen Thu 30-Sept-21 13:17:11

How dreadful. I am another who will not be watching it.

Riverwalk Thu 30-Sept-21 13:17:41

It is not a tribute!

Why have you used that word?

Namsnanny Thu 30-Sept-21 13:17:51

If Steve coogans in it it must be a p* take.

Urmstongran Thu 30-Sept-21 13:18:59

Emotive choice of word there CraftyGranny. So wrong.

FannyCornforth Thu 30-Sept-21 13:19:18

I’m going to report this thread due to its incredibly misleading title

Alegrias1 Thu 30-Sept-21 13:20:04

Anybody watch David Tennant as Dennis Neilsen?

If you think this drama about Saville will be glorifying him, then you really have a very odd view of the world.

I'd watch Steve Coogan reading the phone book. I'll be watching.

Alegrias1 Thu 30-Sept-21 13:21:00

Good for you Fanny. I'm so angry about this.

Lucca Thu 30-Sept-21 13:21:24

IT IS NOT A TRIBUTE.

Lucca Thu 30-Sept-21 13:21:55

And it’s role, not roll.

MissAdventure Thu 30-Sept-21 13:22:06

I'll watch, too.
Coogan is an excellent actor, and I enjoy true crime documentaries.

Tricia247uk Thu 30-Sept-21 13:22:25

I don't think it's going to be a tribute more ' to explore how Savile's offending went unchecked for so long ...' (exec producer Pope).
I question though whether it should be aired at this time-I think victims' experiences will be still too raw.

JaneJudge Thu 30-Sept-21 13:22:28

Yes, David Tennant was brilliant in it and I thought that before I watched the actual footage of Dennis being interviewed. It was an amazing performance

Alegrias1 Thu 30-Sept-21 13:23:29

As I fully expect that this thread will disappear shortly, as it should, can I just point out how quickly people jump to conclusions about things and get entirely the wrong end of the stick??

Remember that when next you read some made up nonsense on here, or anywhere else.

JaneJudge Thu 30-Sept-21 13:24:37

I've noticed the first few replies set the tone of a thread too

JaneJudge Thu 30-Sept-21 13:25:16

although your reply was the second on this one Aelgrias grin but that's why I googled and found the article

Georgesgran Thu 30-Sept-21 13:26:23

Not a ‘tribute’.
Steve Cohan said he thought long and hard before he took the role, so I think it’s going to be quite revealing and hit home how this ‘monster’ defrauded so many into believing he was a ‘good egg’.

MayBee70 Thu 30-Sept-21 13:27:24

We mustn’t forget that people like Saville existed. And, unfortunately, still exist. Steve Coogan thought long and hard about taking the part I believe and he must have decided to do it for the right reasons. We mustn’t forget that sometimes people get away with things, not because they keep it hidden but because they do it in full view of everyone so no one believes it’s happening. I didn’t watch David Tennants portrayal of Nielsen but I’ve heard that it was excellent. I don’t think I’ll be able to watch the Saville one, though. The very mention of his name makes my flesh crawl.

Elegran Thu 30-Sept-21 13:27:29

It is too soon. They should wait until it has become as much a history story as Jack the Ripper.

When I saw the word "tribute" in the title I was horrified, but it seems it is no such thing. "Tribute" implies that someone is being praised for something, not that the story of how their crimes escaped deserved retribution for so long.

Lucca Thu 30-Sept-21 13:27:36

Wouldn’t it be nice if OP returned and said sorry she had misunderstood ??

Oops was that a ? overhead ?
