people who had their bath tub, a proper plumbed in enamelled one, in the kitchen, covered by a kind of door used as a table, with the taps poking through.
that seemed fascinating to me.

guess that tv rental was better than not having one !
i'd never seen that, only heard about it since, the coin slot ones.
never heard of the pop man either, don't think we had them round our way.
we had a man who came all the way from france on his bicycle, with dangling onions to sell. that really impressed me.
but oh yes, korky the cat. what a wonderful name.
do you remember the numbskulls. it was really quite an advanced idea. like something out of h g wells.

Grannynannywanny Yes that’s the one, lethal?

Milkman, bread and, coalman, butcher all delivered to the door. Most housewives were home all day.

mrsmopp Sat 02-Oct-21 00:25:43

Coin in the slot TV. Had to keep feeding money into this device or it would cut you off half way through the programme! Chap came round on Friday, emptied the money out, took out the rental and gave us what was left, which we fed back in. How did we ever think that was a good idea??

Listening to this and reading this thread has brought back so many lovely memories. I remember rediffusion telly that had the local radio stations on it. The pop man coming around on a Saturday morning. Walls ice cream with the lad on a bike and the fridge on the back you took your bowl out and ordered by scoops.

Witzend Fri 01-Oct-21 21:13:05

Anyone else remember Hartnell’s In Love? I adored that when I was about 14.

Shelflife Fri 01-Oct-21 21:10:29

Curlywhirley, we are on holding just now and self catering. Prior to leaving home I was shopping for easy food to take away - we wanted to avoid pubs and busy restaurants . I had completely forgotten Fray Bentos pies! as I looked for inspiration on the supermarket shelves and there they were !! I bought two . We have just had them for tea with fresh vegetables. They were more tasty than I anticipated.
Also remember Corona pop, delivered to the door , me and my siblings were allowed a bottle each every week - such a treat !!!!
Another lovely memory is sitting with my twin along side mum with the radio tuned to Listen with mother - happy days . As for American tan stockings - I remember them well.

Heavy ceramic hot water bottles which could cripple you for life if dropped on a foot
hollysteers was your hot water bottle like this one? I remember my Mum referred to it as the pig.

hollysteers Fri 01-Oct-21 20:02:26

Evening in Paris, Californian Poppy, Tabu scents.
Fairy bike.
4 sweets for a penny going to Saturday morning flicks.
Heavy ceramic hot water bottles which could cripple you for life if dropped on a foot.

Flatley dryer.

The string of lights on the Christmas tree going off. Cheers of delight if they popped back on after Dad had gone round every one and found a loose connection.

Lincslass

Curlywhirly

Panstick
Ecru tights
Panty girdles
Putting coats on top of the bedclothes in winter
Ice on the inside of the bedroom windows
Rag and Bone man coming around with his horse and cart (like Steptoe and Son) and giving your Mum a donkey stone for anything she donated.
Watch with Mother and Andy Pandy.
Indian Brandee
Sanitary Belts
Half day closing in towns and absolutely no shops open on Sundays
May poles
Collecting bonfire wood in a pushchair and knocking on neighbours' doors collecting a penny for the guy.
Billy Smarts Circus on TV on Christmas day - I hated it!
Sunday roast at lunchtime then a tinned salmon or ham salad followed by tinned fruit and evaporated milk for tea
Vesta Chicken curry, Birds powdered custard, Fray Bentos pies in a tin (think you can still get them!)

Birds custard powder in my cupboard.
Vesta curry and Fray Bentos can be got in Tesco’s, but think I’ll leave those there ?

I don’t mind admitting that I buy a couple of Fray Bentos pies occasionally - they sit in the cupboard for the odd day when I really can’t be bothered to cook, or I’m just too tired. We have one each, just with frozen peas.
Hardly haute pie cuisine, but we don’t care.

Zoejory Fri 01-Oct-21 19:11:55

I adored Kunzle Cakes, ixion!

I also miss the lovely chewable lids on toothpaste tubes. I could chew on this for hours.

Brownie's Bob-a-Job weeks...knocking on the doors of complete strangers, offering to do a job and going in for an unknown period of time! Some jobs took 5-10 minutes, others took forever.

Bri-nylon sheets

Popeye on the tv

Buying Billy Bunter, Jennings and Darbishire, Bobby Brewster and the William books with pocket money or borrowing from the library

I loved 'the Laughing Policeman' and 'I'm a Pink toothbrush, you're a Blue toothbrush' when played on the radio

Sunday school

Piano's in lots of people's front rooms

Dogs put out and wandering the streets all day, going home at teatime

Zoejory Fri 01-Oct-21 18:42:49

I stunned my grandchildren one Christmas . They'd got a hula hoop and I slipped it on and it all flooded back and I was 12 again smile

mrsmopp Fri 01-Oct-21 18:40:00

Did you get a pain in your side from overdoing the Hula Hoop? Oh I loved my hula hoop!!

Watch with Mother
Janet and John books
Clackers
Diana and Sandie
Cat's cradle
Chinese skipping (I think that is what we called it - it involved elastic)
Hot pants and bell bottom trousers
Cassette players
Findus crispy pancakes
Angel delight , frozen to make a sort of ice cream in a certain long, hot summer

You can probably guess my age from these!
