I've just been to Boots to buy Tyrozets, a throat lozenge I've relied on for sore throats ever since I can remember. No longer on sale and discontinued as it contains an antibiotic. Considering we cannot see a doctor for love nor money, I cannot understand the logic!

The talk of raw onions brings to mind my mother’s preferred remedy, a disgusting linctus called Liqua Fruta. Only the really ill could be persuaded to swallow it though I think it was pretty effective.

Great remedies there ! My friend swears by an onion ( raw) sandwich when she has sore throats , colds etc. I don't think I could eat that - really dislike raw onion.
Shandy 57 , I too had repeated tonsillitis as a child / teenager. Had tonsils removed aged 17 and never regretted it. Sore throats gone for ever! I remember well the pain and horrible infections , it had a massive impact on my life. Sounds dramatic I know and in the grand scheme of things I suppose it was a minor problem - but the difference it made to me was remarkable. As you say it is not done anymore but it definitely worked for me . No more days off sick from work. I have been perfectly fine without them . Fortunately my DC and GC escape the dreaded tonsillitis!

I was thinking about Tyrosets only yesterday and wondering if you could still get them so thanks for posting, I shall get some today.. Many years ago the doctor prescribed them for my sore throat.

Am I strange? I hadn't thought about setting up a winter first aid box. We have paracetamol..

I didn't think of it either, kittylester, I just check the use by dates of what is in the cupboard!

And think "If it's not too out-of-date it should work"
Don't try that at home.

DH and I were both wiped out with non-covid December 2019. It certainly wasn’t a flu as we both had difficulty breathing with DH eventually prescribed steroids. It was weeks before we began to feel better.
I also suffered tonsillitis all through childhood and eventually had a tonsillectomy aged 21! Boy, was that painful at an older age.
Salt gargle, I find, instantly relieves a sore throat along with honey and lemon drinks. Items I always have at home anyway.

My Dad always recommended salt gargle and my Mum used to make glycerine, honey and lemon drinks.

Old-fashioned remedies are still useful although I don't use glycerine in the drink.

Lemsip they've been completely withdrawn from the market, you won't be able to get any.

I'm off to get the Chloralieve and need to replenish my echinaea.

Honey in a bit of hot water, lemon or orange juice and a slug of rum.

Olbas Oil is also worth having. It is very good for congestion but what a lot don’t realise is the it is also a very good muscle rub. Also it is a natural product.

Probably. That was mentioned to me by Australians at the time as they have workers going over from Wuhan to Australia.
