Without sedation!!!
shock
Any tips, please, for a coward?

BlueSky Tue 05-Oct-21 10:16:13

I’m asking the same question.

MissAdventure Tue 05-Oct-21 10:17:30

Ooh gawd!
Mine is tomorrow.
I'm absolutely petrified!

BlueSky Tue 05-Oct-21 10:19:18

MissA any particular reason why no sedation? I’m worried with or without!

MissAdventure Tue 05-Oct-21 10:24:29

Mine is an emergency, so sedation isn't an option that quickly.
Believe me, I've asked begged, pleaded

MissAdventure Tue 05-Oct-21 10:26:13

Actually my letter says it's a gastroscopy.
I don't know if there is any difference.

rafichagran Tue 05-Oct-21 10:29:04

Please try not to worry misadventure I have had two. I was offered sedation but refused, and had it without, it was very quick, when they put the tube on my mouth, they asked me to swallow, I did, and had no problems. They also gave me a throat spray which helped, tasted vile though.
Good luck, you will be fine. I drove home afterwards.

Jaxjacky Tue 05-Oct-21 10:32:02

I had mine without sedation, just the throat spray, it was fine. It also meant I could understand and remember the results discussed straight afterwards.

Josianne Tue 05-Oct-21 10:32:24

Mine was quick and painless without sedation. A bit of a strange feeling when you swallow the tube, but no spasms or retching. I think the stomach is inflated because I let out a huge burp like a pig afterwards.
Off the couch and ready to go straightaway. Good luck.

MissAdventure Tue 05-Oct-21 10:33:18

Thank you.
I'll endeavour to stay calm; I'm sure panicking won't help in the slightest.

Blossoming Tue 05-Oct-21 10:33:52

I had one, I have a bad gag reflex but it was fine. I think the anticipation was the worst part. Good luck.

rafichagran Tue 05-Oct-21 10:34:09

Sorry I answered the above about a endoscopy as originally stated.

Susan56 Tue 05-Oct-21 10:35:28

I had mine without sedation, just the throat spray. As others have said it’s a quick procedure.I found it uncomfortable rather than painful.Just as I thought this is getting a bit much it was over.Lots of burping afterwards!

MissAdventure Tue 05-Oct-21 10:35:55

I'm sure they're pretty much the same?

Riverwalk Tue 05-Oct-21 10:40:21

Endoscopy just means having a look inside with a camera - so you're having a gastroscopy, not a colonoscopy!

Sparklefizz Tue 05-Oct-21 10:42:43

I had my endoscopy without sedation as I had no one to bring me home and stay with me afterwards.

The nurses are very experienced. It was a quick procedure. I had the throat spray. I did gag a little but it was uncomfortable rather than painful. I kept reminding myself that it would quickly be over.

Afterwards I had a very husky sexy voice for a few hours, like that actress Fenella Fielding back in the day smile

Lincslass Tue 05-Oct-21 10:44:35

If it is not until tomorrow, then you should be able to have sedation, unless medical implications as to why not. Throat spray to numb back of throat, friend had it done without sedation, was uncomfortable, not painful. Quite groggy after sedation, and need someone to take you home as can’t drive for 24 hrs after. Sure you’ll be ok , will have plenty of support from the staff I’m sure. Hope all goes well. If you can’t tolerate it they will give you some sedation.

MissAdventure Tue 05-Oct-21 10:48:35

I think I've been fitted in amongst the brave souls who have opted for no sedation.
I'm not sure why, but my pleas have fallen on deaf ears, and it does need to be done, so...

Ilovecheese Tue 05-Oct-21 10:48:41

I also had one without sedation. Not painful but a bit weird. The nurse was very reassuring and held my hand.

BlueSky Tue 05-Oct-21 10:50:15

I thought they give you sedation on the day if required, does it need to be pre-booked? Anyway all the best MissA!

MissAdventure Tue 05-Oct-21 10:51:20

Thank you all. smile
Still pooping myself though, but I shall just have to be brave.

MissAdventure Tue 05-Oct-21 10:53:41

Bluesky
I have had a sedated one before, and it was fine.
I just remember saying "oooh, this sedation seems strong!" and then I woke up and it was done.
Much more civilised.

Sarnia Tue 05-Oct-21 11:21:36

I have had one and am due another soon. I was beside myself but it wasn't nearly as bad as I have imagined. I was asked on the day whether I wanted the throat spray or sedation, so I would ask. Sedation is the choice for me. Good luck. I will be thinking of you.

MissAdventure Tue 05-Oct-21 11:23:07

I'm going to study my letter when I get home and see why I can't be sedated.

hollysteers Tue 05-Oct-21 11:27:28

I would not have it without sedation myself.
The procedure was unable to be completed on the unsedated patient before me and she left having to arrange another appointment.
