Help! The old kitchen door is locked. I'm wandering hither and thither like a lost soul. Has a new kitchen been opened please? I hate being this side of the door.

Urmstongran Sat 23-Oct-21 22:12:02

Sorry Lizzie I forgot to include you there! What are you reading?

Hellogirl1 Sat 23-Oct-21 22:11:01

Maw, correct me if wrong, but doesn`t Rosie look like Gracie?

Urmstongran Sat 23-Oct-21 22:10:30

Me? Read a book about baking? ???

I’ve just started this one. She wrote ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ many years ago.

This one is our book club read. I’ve got just over a fortnight. ‘Tidy’ as Nessa would say.

Goodnight dear Kitcheners, I am enjoying a mug of hot chocolate, then I’m off to bed. No cake though, or I won’t sleep.

MayBeMaw Sat 23-Oct-21 21:49:52

I hope it’s Mary Berry’s Cakes Urmstongran - I’m still feeling the lack of ????
(A low calorie Kitchen would be a retrograde step.)

Lizzie72 Sat 23-Oct-21 21:31:59

What are you currently reading, Urmstongran?

Jaxjacky Sat 23-Oct-21 21:19:57

Ah, ok, like I’m sorry then, thanks.

Marydoll Sat 23-Oct-21 21:17:08

Mea culpa is a Latin phrase that means "through my fault" and is an acknowledgement of having done wrong. The expression is used also as an admission of having made a mistake that should have been avoided.

It's a phrase I use often. ?

Lizzie72 Sat 23-Oct-21 21:16:45

GrandmaFrench hasn’t posted for a while - or have I missed her posts? I like reading them! Hope she’s ok

Jaxjacky Sat 23-Oct-21 21:04:07

I assume that’s Latin Marydoll what does it mean please?

Urmstongran Sat 23-Oct-21 20:16:03

‘Evening All’.

Quiet in here right now. I expect most are busy watching ‘Strictly’.
? ??

Interesting posts to read though. Thank you everyone for the contributions.

Himself is watching (another!) qualifying round of the Texan Grand Prix.
?

I think I’ll go back to my book reading ...

MayBeMaw Sat 23-Oct-21 20:00:13

Blossoming nobody can wander in the Kitchen! Or rather , wandering is what we do best, not to say rambling! And Marydoll you haven’t derailed anything -that book looks fascinating . Paws ancestors going back to the 1500’s were Southern Irish although his Granny’s ancestors were one of the “Linen houses” of Belfast , coming originally from Glasgow.
You don’t have to be Josh Widdecombe with Royal ancestors for it to be riveting do you?
We’re most of not all of us a right old mixture I suspect although in the wise words of the Scottish Proverb “We’re a’ Jock Tamson’s bairns”.

Marydoll Sat 23-Oct-21 19:47:10

I shall take my leave, having been partly responsible for derailling this gentle thread, where differences have always been left at the door. An admirable ethos, thanks to Mr Soop's lovely lady.
Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa! blush.

Blossoming Sat 23-Oct-21 19:47:03

This stuff fascinates me Marydoll, mobility is definitely not a modern phenomenon.

Mr. B laughs at me because I love looking around really ancient graveyards. To me they hold stories waiting to be told.

Marydoll Sat 23-Oct-21 19:42:49

Blossoming, my SIL gave me a book called, Blood of the Isles. It analysis blood groups and whether it's true or not, my ancestors apparently came to Ireland from Norway. It was very interesting, but a bit heavy going at times.

Hi to everyone in the kitchen tonight. Oh how I wish I’d been lucky enough to have an afternoon in curled up on the sofa with the TV, but sadly not to be today but hopefully soon!

We’ve both had our flu and covid boosters this morning, then off for lunch with DD2 and DGC. That ended up as a shopping afternoon which I really enjoyed but my purse didn’t. Oh well at least I’ve made a start on some Christmas/Birthday shopping. We’ve quite a few family birthdays in December so it’s a double whammy really.
So far no adverse side effects of the jabs - hopefully you’re the same muse

Tomorrow we’re travelling to Edinburgh as a half way stop as on Monday we’re travelling to Cheshire to attend a memorial service for a family member. We’re taking the train as it’s quite easy and neither of us really like driving long distances nowadays

Thank you for the cake maw it sounds really yummy. It’s such a shame about your visitors forgetting especially as you’d gone to so much trouble

Blossoming Sat 23-Oct-21 19:34:45

Anyway, I’ve rather wandered from the thread! I ‘met’ Mr. Soop in the kitchen as Mr. Soop, being as I’m not an old time Kitchener. I’ve only learned about his alias today, and as soop says he prefers Mr. Soop I’ll carry o with that grin

MayBeMaw Sat 23-Oct-21 19:31:42

I have some family letters from the time of one of the periods of Irish famine as some of you may remember. They recount how desperate times were and how people suffered.
When we moan about shortages in Sainsbugs or the Co-op, we really don’t know we’re born do we?

Marydoll Sat 23-Oct-21 19:30:44

Kitty, I used to make great home made chips, just like my mum's. However, I seem to have lost my touch. I need them to be small and crunchy, DH likes them big and soft. He always wins, although it is unintentional on my part. I foolishly am striving for perfection, but it won't happen any time soon! sad

Blossoming Sat 23-Oct-21 19:28:26

Some of mine came to Scotland from Norway grin The earliest record I have is a Frenchman who appears to have arrived in Ayrshire in the 12th Century, though it’s difficult to follow a trail that old. There are quite a few of us in Canada now. The social upheavals that caused the families to uproot and spread outwards are fascinating.

kittylester Sat 23-Oct-21 19:24:11

Mine came from Ireland during the potato famine. I love potatoes so my Irish side is still there.

We have home made chips a couple of times a month - a real treat.

Grandmajean Sat 23-Oct-21 19:08:43

We had home made chips tonight Jaxjacky Delicious even if I did make them myself !
Shame about the cancellation Muse - you must be disappointed
.Soop I know " The Boys" gave you hassle but I can't wait to see the results.
Have had two youngest GC for a large part of the day but at 9 and 6 it is much easier than when they were toddlers
Come back missing posters !

MayBeMaw Sat 23-Oct-21 18:59:43

Marydoll

Oh I know why mine came to Scotland. I don't know whether I'm willing to share it! They may still be on the Most Wanted list!

No Jaxjacky not Rosie.
Hattie (top pic) was very poorly indeed last summer (2020) and again in March of this year and sadly had to be PTS aged only 4. She had been my companion after Paw died and throughout lockdown. As you can imagine, I was devastated.
Rosie came at the end of April and is a totally affectionate cuddly girl who doesn’t like to let me out of her sight.

Jaxjacky Sat 23-Oct-21 18:43:23

Blossoming seems like your trusty foot deserves a rest, gently does it.
A quiet, lazy day after a marvellous 8 hours straight of sleep and 10 hours in bed, Saturday paper, then pub. So pleased the pub has heaters outdoors, definitely takes the chill off, it was good to catch up there, I was too tired yesterday.
I know nothing of the history of the kitchen, but I’ll always refer to people as the poster refers to them whilst I’m here, not historically, it seems polite.
Oven fish and homemade chips for dinner, with, of course, mushy peas.
Disappointing muse, but probably sensible. Gosh soop I almost wish I had a pet for you to paint..not seriously, but that reminds me Maw did I see in another thread your dog is poorly? You haven’t mentioned her for a while.
Anyway, off to cut chips and put the oven on, enjoy your evening all. I’ll be thinking of you Sue in your sadness and panache too x
