Staying on topic- threads in general

Do you mind if a thread de-rails after it has been running for a while and extends into other areas? I would have thought this was a natural progression of any discussion and sometimes the original subject returns with new light cast on it. It certainly seems in my opinion an odd reason for deleting any thread.

I’m disappointed that the word ‘mother’ isn’t being replaced by the word ‘mither’ in Scottish documents.

I haven't reported a single thing, just so that is known. Not a single thing on any thread or topic. Full permission to anyone who would like to report this comment to gransnet and have the same answer from them

I'd hazard a guess that you're right Rosie51. Childish and immature but it happens.

Rosie51 Sun 24-Oct-21 13:04:37

I'd hazard a guess it's people who feel they're not winning the argument that report and want threads deleted.

To be fair to MN ths is the only place you can talk about this subject, as Jane has demonstrated, I think MN are incredibly brave on this topic.

FannyCornforth

Don’t they just delete any threads that they think might gain unwanted attention from TRA’s?
I tend to think that it might be quite commonplace after all of the bother on MN.

It is obvious isn't it? I do wonder if they are being reported by stealth though but I don't suppose they'll tell us

FarNorth Sun 24-Oct-21 12:45:32

If so FannyCornforth that is giving in to bullies.
If there is anything in the thread that GNHQ takes exception to, they need to tell us.

I don’t really care if threads go off the original topic, sometimes the new direction is interesting and the original topic has been flogged to death. I suppose if it annoys you you could always write a post back on topic rather than silently seethe!

sodapop Sun 24-Oct-21 12:31:13

Good post FarNorth your last sentence is so true.

FarNorth Sun 24-Oct-21 12:05:18

In general, no, of course a thread shouldn't be deleted because it has changed direction.
Anyone who wants to get back onto the topic can post to say so. If others still don't want to get back to it, so what.
It's not a book, or a dissertation, it's just a conversation among random people on the internet.

If it's deleted because of 'breaking talk guidelines' that should be made clear.
Although it seems that GN is usually reticent about which talk guidelines have been broken, so we don't necessarily know where we went wrong.
It's a bit like being 6 again, with confusing adults around.

What’s the difference between God and the moderators on GN.
God knows he’s not a moderator.

Galaxy Sun 24-Oct-21 11:39:27

Which is why we dont want those who run internet sites deciding what speech is ok, we mostly know nothing about the values of those people.

Callistemon Sun 24-Oct-21 11:34:43

I didn't know that.

Galaxy Sun 24-Oct-21 11:26:44

Facebook was started to rate the attractiveness of students, it started from a place of deep unpleasantness.

Callistemon Sun 24-Oct-21 11:24:23

Thanks Chewbacca, just found it.

Was it derailed?
I didn't think so, although perhaps it meandered away from the original OP about Scottish documents but that is what tends to happen to threads.

Chewbacca Sun 24-Oct-21 11:23:31

JaneJudge Your posts @ 11.00 is interesting because so many posters on MN have been reporting the exact same thing on both FaceAche and Twatter, particularly when feminist issues are discussed. Hard not to think that there's a lot of shutting down going on.

Chewbacca Sun 24-Oct-21 11:20:02

Which thread has been deleted?

Callistemon it was the thread that you contributed to about official documents being reformed to remove the word "mother".

Callistemon Sun 24-Oct-21 11:13:38

Scones

If it was me it would be all dogs and cakes.

Wot, no cats?
Or fluffy bunnies?

Callistemon Sun 24-Oct-21 11:12:33

Which thread has been deleted?

They don't always show up as deleted confused

JaneJudge Sun 24-Oct-21 11:00:29

I think 'people' watch those threads. It's why I don't comment much on them and are very vague. I actually got banned from facebook for posting something I posted on that thread yesterday and when I was let back on, I was hounded and reported all over FB. There is a really aggressive sub group I think that is completely obsessed with silencing people (no one on here!) I just post photos of my dog on FB btw and cakes wink

Galaxy Sun 24-Oct-21 10:53:57

You win scones, you now control the internet so if this is deleted we know who to blame ?

Scones Sun 24-Oct-21 10:48:16

If it was me it would be all dogs and cakes.

Galaxy Sun 24-Oct-21 10:45:32

It would be brilliant if it was me.

Scones Sun 24-Oct-21 10:44:27

So who does control the internet?

grin
