What does colour mean to you

Watching Prue Leith’s garden programme, I was struck by her use of bright colours which she puts down to her South African background. How I wish I was bold enough! Far too dull in colour choices everywhere. And DH thinks anything other than black or beige is “garish” which doesn’t help.?

I "had my colours done" some years ago. I sat in front of a mirror with my hair back and the consultant behind me as she draped coloured materials around my neck. It proved what I had always instinctively known, that beige and cream snd yellow make me look ill, bold colours suit me best, especially pinks and reds and black just didn't do anything for me. In my home, I like neutral colours for walls and flooring so I can have bright accessories and pictures. Just done my bathroom - white walls, light grey matt tiles, grey worktop, dark grey Karndean flooring and bright turquoise towels, a picture and in ornaments etc. Looks amazing!

I'm not keen on beige but "greige" or grey are OK as background colours. Our home had a lot of beige carpet when we moved in, I'm looking forward to replacing it!
I've always loved sharp, deep yellow, not as a wall colour in a living room but in a bathroom. My last bedroom, a really sunny dual aspect room, was a beautiful sky blue. My old, sunny, living room was mid-blue (similar to F&B Dix blue) and was very restful.
I also love tan, the colour of oak floor boards.
Do any of you see numbers as colours? I always have, 3 is pale blue and 2 is pale lemon, I think there's a name for this!

White, if I could have everything in my house white I would. Clothing I love black and beige, I’d say 99% of my clothes are black. So I guess I like primary colours, obviously I love autumn colour and flowers ect just decor and clothes are plain colours

Colour is everything - I love autumn colours and always have.
I love the advent of spring heralded by yellow crocuses, the daffodils making way for summer, nothing beats the perfume of the red rose. You might note how fast food cafes are painted red and yellow because they are not relaxing colours, you eat and go - making room for the next diner!
Grey, to me is dismal (Fashionable or not) Oatmeal colour is more relaxing.

I love colour especially as a statement. Our living room is white and grey but with fuschia cushions, curtains and lamps as a statement.

Yellow makes me think of spring - daffodils. As soon as they come into the shops I fill my house with them.
I am not so keen on the autumn colours as they make me think of things dying

I love bright colours - my favourite is red. The Autumnal colours suit my complexion. I find grey very depressing and cannot understand why it has been so popular in home décor in recent years.

Green, blue (but not navy) and terracotta are probably my favourites for decor. For clothes, I like colourful things (child of the 60s and 70s) but not bright reds or purples. And not black. All down to personal tastes.

Until I took up botanical painting green was green. Then when I observed properly I realised exactly how many different shades of green there actually were. This is true of most colours.

There is a psychology of colours and how they have an impact on our feelings, which interior designers use. Green is restful etc. as you have observed. I wonder what our favourite colours say about us?

I too am a botanical artist and cannot ever get enough greens!!! True that when we really looks at colour it speaks to us in ways words or even music doesn't and I am a singer too !

Our eldest DS and his new partner have painted most of their home bare walls in what looks like 50 shades of grey! Ok as a statement in context but uninspired and boring when repeated throughout the house! Shows that they've latched on to a current trend and have effectively closed the door on colour , shame as they're a lovely pair not 'grey' at all.

Most of my clothing has red or black in it they are the colours that I find myself gravitating towards. I have red shoes, red handbags and alot of the accessories that I buy for around the house are red.

I have a lot of evergreen trees and shrubs in my garden and it is amazing how many shades of green there is in the depth of winter.

i love the autumn shades, especially terra cotta. And as soon as the evenings draw in I find myself drawn to gold ... my favourite colour to wear ... bright red.

My acrylic paintings are mostly different blues because I live near the sea. But recently I painted a stormy sky and sea of various greys, and it was voted favourite painting by the public at our local exhibition. Such a surprise. As for clothes, I’ve had to stop wearing white anywhere near my face. When I smiled it showed the contrast of my ‘not white’ teeth.

I wonder why so many winter clothes are dark colours.

Any thing on the blue spectrum for me, until it shifts towards purple, my least favourite colour. A really interesting thread. I’m always drawn to white flowers though.

I just adore the colours of nature, the sky in particular. Those colours could never be replicated. I have different colours for different days - strange I know! Monday is blue, Tuesday us light yellow, Wednesday is bright yellow, Thursday is a sort of dull yellow, Friday is dark red, Saturday is bright red and Sunday is black. What would a psychiatrist think of that I wonder!!

I think your love of different colours changes with the stages of your life.
As a teenager psychedelia was everywhere and I wore lots of bright clashing colours and bright green shoes.
When I married purple and orange were all the rage, anyone for a bright orange candlewick bedspread? Or a purple and lilac bathroom we inherited it was like a migraine attack.
Then I went into my little black dress period with Jacky O dresses. DH always said I suited dirty colours I think and hope he meant muted .
Now I'm into bright primary colours for myself but the house is muted creams, blues and greens restful, calm bliss.

I used to always wear black especially in my 'clubbing days'. Since I have been ill I prefer brighter colours. I have a grey and cream kitchen but wouldnt mind changing it to something brighter or adding more plants maybe. My lounge is navy and gold with cream and bedrooms various neutral colours. Looking out at my garden there are so many shades of green, lovely. I love the yellow of spring daffodils always cheer the mood and summer flowers of all shades.

I love colour. After having both my cataracts done this summer I realized how much I had been missing. The world is glorious again

I love different shades of blue which resemble the sky, and the calming greens of a woodland - though green is not a favourite shade in itself, especially bottle green which was our school uniform. Pastel shades are what I like best - pale pinks and also shades of brown - the rich earth. An Aran cardigan in cream or beige looks lovely as the texture of the stitches stands out. Shades of turquoise attract me.

I very much dislike black - the fashion for black tiles, cupboard fronts and worktops in kitchens makes me feel a bit depressed. Bright colours like purple, lime green, orange and red are not to my taste, some I find oppressive. We're all different, aren't we?

As an artist, colour is very exciting to me and I am always fascinated by the many varying tones and shades of each colour. Colour can affect our mood and be uplifting or depressing depending on our personal responses.

Green is my favourite colour it makes me feel calm and relaxed. Purple is my next favourite colour it doesnt do anything for me except I love the colour.

Namsnanny, your artistic friend might be interested in a new exhibition - Late Constable - at the Royal Academy from today until mid Feb. The publicity for it uses a sea and skyscape predominantly using greys. Sorry, can’t share a link.

I love colour. I really don’t get the modern fashion of grey everywhere. Carpets, suites, cushions, curtains. I couldn’t bear it. I’ve just visited a friend who has recently moved and is getting all new furnishings. I asked what colour. She replied grey in varying shades and navy blue curtains. ??
