Just a question does anyone give to charity? I used to give religiously until I realised just how much the charity actually receives out of your donations maybe 1 % after mangers etc have taken their cut very disillusioned

I give to Mary's Meals they feed 2 million children a day and I think the figure is 93% of all donations goes direct to those in need.Apart from that I sponsor two girls and theres a DD to the local childrens hospice and the Glasgow soup kitchen. We used to help out with a few things but not since covid.Maybe next year we'll get back to actively helping.I cancelled my DD 's to the big charities after the stories came out about workers behaviour when they visited sites abroad and the massive salaries and perks of the paid staff at high levels .

My sisters cat charity and the Salvation Army. I used to donate to others but salaries paid to staff stopped that.

Yes - regular monthly payments to Cancer Research and a Children’s charity (forget the name)

Smileless2012 Fri 29-Oct-21 20:12:09

Yes, we give to animal charities and since we got married have sponsored a child through World Vision so have done so for 41+ years.

I have a monthly direct debit for the Children's Air Ambulance, so essential.

Yes, to Plan for my sponsored child, to Ty Hafan children’s hospice, to Cancer Research, and to Welsh Air Ambulance. I don’t give to street collections, I prefer to give to the charities I care about.

I don't but I volunteer my time picking rubbish up or knitting.

Any books that I have written have gone to charities and any money after printing costs are taken out goes to them. That includes animals and veteran charities.
I am more than pleased to say that the main one which is my local Childrens Hospice has received well over a 4 figure sum to help the children with equipment to help keep them alive.

Yes I give to charities but it is small charities that are not big organisations. Mary’s Meals Little Mouse, a charity providing books and encouraging children to read them in Laos, I also get my toilet paper from Don’t Give a Crap which donates 50% of is profits to building toilets in Africa. We have helped several people from Laos through college or Uni by paying their fees and give a yearly donation to a school in Laos that teaches English to village children. Also give to the food bank on a regular basis. When you see how other people are living it makes you grateful for you have.

I donate to the local hospice and the special care baby unit at our local hospital.

Yes - I work on the assumption that whilst a lot of it might not reach its target -if you give nothing then whose who need it will definitely get nothing. I give to several charities - again assuming that some of it might get through.

Yes to local hospice regularly, a local woman’s refuge and food bank lump sums twice a year.

I have monthly payments to two children's charity and a homeless charity. I also do a monthly lottery for our local air ambulance. OH also has a number of charities that he supports monthly. Back in the day, when I had cash on me I always used to give all my loose change to a charity if stopped in the street and I also regularly give and buy from charity shops. With regard to the costs of running charities, the big charities need good staff so I don't object to them paying decent wages. My niece has worked for a number of charities and we always donate to them too, currently she works for Sight Savers, she's a clever woman with a master's and could earn heaps more if she worked outside of the charity sector. I certainly don't begrudge her a penny of what she is paid and over the years she has lived in some very difficult and dangerous places eg Liberia, Darfur not for the faint hearted!

Yes, animal charities.

I tend to tick the box that says "add an extra donation of £1" to xyz when I buy things online.

Apart from that I usually give to food banks but now I am getting deliveries I need to figure that out. I wish there was an option for it when online shopping

kircubbin2000 Fri 29-Oct-21 21:11:51

I give to man who feeds feral cats.

MissAdventure Fri 29-Oct-21 21:14:03

Yes, I do.

Chewbacca Fri 29-Oct-21 21:16:46

I have a monthly direct debit to our local hospice, plus support their regular appeals and fund raising events. Used to support the Dog's Trust until I saw how much was deducted for salaries and "administration fees", so now it's the local cattery that gets it.

I buy a few extra extra goods in my order and when I have a bag full, pop them to a food bank collection point - sometimes at an actual food bank, or in a box at a local supermarket ( they accept food bought elsewhere) or through a local appeal on FB. I’m also very active in the WI and we have regular food collections for a local homeless charity.

An option when ordering food would be a good idea although I like to prefer very local groups rather than big name charities.

MerylStreep Fri 29-Oct-21 21:27:35

Yes I do.

I give a monthly about to SightSavers a charity which does incredible work curing trachoma an agonising eye condition. I have very poor eyesight and think that if I was in a developing country without glasses/opticians I would be unable to see to do the daily tasks. I'm grateful for my good fortune and try to give others a leg up.

My mother devoted the last decade of her active life to raising money for AnimalsAsia who save poor bears from horrible conditions. I was so proud of her.

Maggiemaybe Fri 29-Oct-21 21:31:25

Yes. Large charities can't manage themselves so I don't worry about reasonable admin costs.

joannapiano Fri 29-Oct-21 21:36:50

Yes. Cancer Research, DH and son in law having treatment. RSPCA and Cats’ Protection where our rescue animals come from. Battersea Dogs’and Cats’ Home.
Salvation Army as DD works with the homeless.
