The image of the royal family

I know old(er) people are not useless and slung on the scrap heap but…
I have just seen a picture of the Queen and Camilla with the headline that Camilla is going to take on more duties to save the Queen. That makes it that a 74 year old is taking up more work than she is currently doing. Putting aside all prejudices against her I just thought the RF are hardly presenting a dynamic leadership for Britain.
When you look at the RF’s of Europe they present a much more current and contemporary face of monarchy, with their tradition of replacing the head of state at a sensible age.
I think it’s very sad that, if the Queen lives for another ten years, like her mother, then Charles will be 82 and another elderly king.
Do we need younger Kings and Queens to represent us so that the UK is not seen as a doddering old country, or does it make no difference to how we seem to other countries or to ourselves?

Things could be worse. Tycho Brahe (famously ancestor of Judi Dench, we now know) died of a kidney problem after he needed to use the toilet but protocol forbade him from leaving the dining table.

Mind you, he also had a brass nose and a pet elk, so he's not really a good example of a normal person. grin

Veering wildly off topic, I watched this programme. I’ve never seen it before and I can’t imagine it would work with someone less entertaining than Judi Dench but two things surprised me.

Although maybe she was acting for dramatic effect: I was slightly surprised that she didn’t seem to have heard of Tycho Brahe (and also by the fact that I heard no mention of his nose), but much more surprised by the length of time it took her to connect Helsingør to Elsinore.

Joining you in the slight detour....she was talking about it on Graeme Norton this week and was terribly excited that he had a crater on the moon named after him (or a mountain, or something) One of the least exciting things about him, I thought. No mention that the elk got drunk and fell downstairs, either.

Graeme Norton has a crater named after him?

I will admit I didn't know about the elk...

I am in illustrious company then as I hadn’t heard of Tycho either! I loved that programme, particularly her distant cousin actor with the lovely flat in Copenhagen ❤️

Thank you Petra. Paul Burrell ? Surely no one could believe that toad.

On this I agree with you Annie.

I'm sure there are some monarchists who would agree that asking the President of the US (for example) to stop eating and toddle off to bed just because the Queen has, is a little bit anachronistic.

Not the same bed, I trust? ?

I’ll get me coat. grin

???

His wine is rather nice
And I just read one of his books.
Now he has a crater named after him!

He's not just a pretty face.

Tycho Brahe's crater: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tycho_(lunar_crater)

Sadly, no celestial commemoration for Graeme yet. ?

Or the elk.

I still think Charles will arrange for William to be King next. Charles is becoming too political and I believe he'd rather be free to be like that.

Anniebach Tue 02-Nov-21 18:50:27

I don’t think Charles will abdicate

Petera Tue 02-Nov-21 20:15:54

I don’t think Charles will abdicate

I agree with Anniebach. (On absolutely no reliable evidence at all) I think he's desperate to be king…

Anniebach Tue 02-Nov-21 22:17:08

I don’t think Charles is desperate to be king, like the Queen it’s
what he will accept.

The Queen wasn’t born heir to the throne , neither was her father. It fell to them and they accepted it, same with Charles.

Grany Tue 02-Nov-21 22:55:35

If Princes Charles were the ecological hero that the newspapers present him as, he’d ditch the palaces, and drop the army of flunkies that follow him around rather than pretending that one old car which runs on cheese and white wine dregs means anything.

If we truly had a free press, we might have a single mainstream newspaper willing to scream about the hypocrisy of a woman who has lived in palaces for her entire life, her every need catered for by flunkeys, exhorting the world to waste less and preserve more. Monarchy is the embodiment of excess, the most throrough possible manifestation of privilege.

Being lectured on climate change, waste, and the future of the planet by the Royal Family is like being told to watch your veins by a swarm of hungry ticks already fat and full with your blood.

Prince Charles could ditch Buckingham Palace as part of his scale back plans!

Hmm... I won't be taking it as gospel, from a publication that thinks that Charles will be King of England and became Prince of Wales in 1958.

Lucca Wed 03-Nov-21 08:56:15

??

Anniebach Wed 03-Nov-21 08:58:50

Charles became Prince of Wales July 1958 , his investiture
July 1969

Alegrias1 Wed 03-Nov-21 09:03:00

Ah, OK Annie, I misread what they wrote about his investiture. Thank you.

Any comment on the King of England bit?

Anniebach Wed 03-Nov-21 09:12:29

The Aueen is often referred to the Queen of England so no
surprise.

I have been called a flunky be grany , any comment ?
