Premium Bonds…..why, oh why…

I understand the odds of winning are small, so why do I keep winning £25 and not £1,000,000. In my mind, if the odds are so small then the £25 win should be as unlikely as the £1,000,000. I am grateful to have won £25 this month and 3 x £25 last month, but……

I found it strange that when I had a small direct debit in place and purchased bonds every month, I pretty much won every month...never a large amount.
Since cancelling the payment, I've rarely won!

Yes similar here, I think it’s a fiddle that new purchases win to keep you hooked and putting in more. I have won not a bean in the last 5 years!!!

There are far fewer of the older bonds still in the draw as people cash them in. When you die then your heirs can keep them for a year but then have to cash them in. Loads of the original purchasers will probably have died by now reducing the amount of them in the draw. I still have the £1 bond my Nan bought me in 1958, it was worth far more than £1 today.

My grandmother bought £50 of bonds for my son in the 1970s - he won £50 in 1980 and then £100 in 2016. Not a bad return on £50. But it is just luck and he still only has the original £50 of bonds.

My 4 children have under £10 in bonds each. All were bought when they were 5 or so. The youngest is now 50 plus and I wouldn’t know if they have ever won. Never looked. The youngest knows about the bonds, long lost!, and will check after I’m dead. I’ve a neighbour with £20k of bonds and he has nearly £9k of winnings over 10yrs.

I look each month and, on line, they give the date purchased for each win. I have noticed that it is very rare that a bond purchased before the year 2000 ever wins.

Chestnut. We too have an old £1 bond from DHs childhood. But it has never won.

Well, obviously some posters are getting my share ?

Still no email!

Last year I won £925 in total, nothing higher than £25.This year only £250 all in £25's.If nothing next month I intend cashing them all in and buying new ones.I will only miss one month's draw.I hold the maximum.
The million pound agent rings or visits you on the last day of the month if you are that lucky.
I worked there for nine years after leaving school and thoroughly enjoyed it .
Good luck to all GN 's.

As interest rates were so low, I invested some matured bond money into premium bonds . This was in early summer. I worked out that, if I won a single £25 this year, I would be better off than the instant access account. DH did the same but for a much greater amount.

I have won £50 but he has won nothing.

I am away from home for a couple of days and have an email this morning saying I have won a prize but I don’t know my number until I get home.
Will it be big , will it be £25?
The anticipation is great.
I have won £25 for the last two months so probably that, but whatever it is very welcome.

Kim19 Wed 03-Nov-21 08:19:32

Yes, the thrill of the chase does it for me every month especially with current derisory bank interest. I've had two 500 wins in the distant past and regular 50s until Gordon Brown halved it. Still floats my boat after all these years.

Grandma70s Wed 03-Nov-21 08:16:39

Some years ago my son bought £1000 worth, and won £10,000 straight away! Not a penny since, though.

Ladyleftfieldlover Wed 03-Nov-21 08:11:59

I have £100 of bonds bought in the 1990s. I won £25 the first year and another £25 last year. I bought a lot more this summer but haven’t won anything yet.

Charleygirl5 Wed 03-Nov-21 08:07:39

Calistemon I do not know where you live but I think most million pound bond winners lived in Bristol.

The more you have the more likely you are to win.

Maggiemaybe Wed 03-Nov-21 08:05:17

Winnings are tax exempt, Shandy57.

Shandy57 Wed 03-Nov-21 08:02:06

I haven't got any bonds yet, is the tax man informed if you win?

MerylStreep Wed 03-Nov-21 08:00:09

I had a friend some years ago who had a lot of success with her bonds. She took them out every January and put them back
the next month.

We were out earlier today so I probably missed the knock on the door announcing my million pound win.

I said I knew you were out so I took it for you!! Not sure what I did with it now…sorry!!

DH has a theory that only the newer bonds go into the draw, Chestnut.

I think he could be right.

That’s my theory too.

DanniRae Wed 03-Nov-21 07:46:43

Please don't take me to task over my last sentence because I was joking!!

DanniRae Wed 03-Nov-21 07:45:00

I won £75 this month and £100 last month!
I find it very exciting every month when I go online to see if I have won anything. I also love that there is no risk involved so I can safely get my money back. I don't love that I encouraged my darling sister-in-law to buy some and she keeps winning more than me hmm

Did you get an email muse?

I do but I've got the NS&I prize checker app on my phone so know when the next draw is.

Good luck

Sorry JaxJacky I meant to say, because the app says when the draw is, I check that day. A few days after that, I get an email.
www.nsandi.com/prize-checker

Just checked on the website and they list all the big prize winners. Someone holding £100 worth of bonds won £5000 this month.?

Chestnut Tue 02-Nov-21 23:38:55

I wrote to the NS&I some months ago to give them a change of address. I received a letter back saying the bonds purchased in the 1970's no longer existed! So I would recommend anybody with old stock, cash them in and buy new ones.

I did check my account today and it still shows on record I have a £1 Premium Bond from 1956. It's just that I don't think they get entered. I think my other little group of bonds was from the 1990s and they have never won either.
