Why don't we sometimes talk about what is good about Britain for a change?

Here goes.

When it comes to acting on Global Warming, we are leading the field, in both commitment and achievement.

Aproximately 40% of the electricity we generate is carbon neutral. At this moment over 50% of the power we are producing is carbon neutral gridwatch.co.uk/. Our per capita emission level is one of the lowest in the developed world.

Thanks for this uplifting thread

I agree with all of the above!

Jaxjacky Fri 05-Nov-21 09:19:50

We can wear what we like.
We laugh at ourselves.
We support the underdog.
We have a lot of local history.
We have excellent regional food and drink.

What a lovely refreshing thread - makes such a nice change from the usual ‘we’re an inconsequential island that’s nothing but an embarrassment’ c**p we get on here.

Smileless2012 Fri 05-Nov-21 09:10:22

I can only agree with everything that's already been said. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

Great thread M0nica.

We are a polite!

nadateturbe Fri 05-Nov-21 09:03:23

Thanks Josianne. Was about to repost mine.

NHS healthcare that's available to all and, as under attack and pressure as it is, is still better than anything available elsewhere

I wondered about this with all the complaints about waiting times etc so I 'googled" and we are indeed officially number 1. Well done NHS.

Lovely positive thread for a change. Agree this is a beautiful country, fabulous people, we are lucky to live here faults and all.
Makes a change for all the Bah Humbug comments recently.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 05-Nov-21 08:54:19

All the above.
Our pageantry which no other country can equal.
Freedom of speech, universal suffrage and freedom from rigged elections.
Our climate and changing seasons which enable us to have beautiful gardens all year and to produce food all year.
Our beautiful coastline and seas.

nanna8 Fri 05-Nov-21 08:48:39

The beautiful, beautiful old buildings and the gardens. History oozing out of your pores. We have very little here and nothing so ancient and spectacular as places like Westminster Abbey. Have to admit the weather isn’t a positive but at least you don’t have prolonged droughts and bushfires.

Bellanonna Fri 05-Nov-21 08:42:55

Our courtesy on the road (with occasional exceptions). We let someone through, they acknowledge, we politely acknowledge back!

Lucca Fri 05-Nov-21 08:36:52

Our sense of humour
Our theatrical tradition
Our bbc
Our NHS

Can’t you get clean water out of a tap in any other country?

One of the wonders of visiting ‘home’ was drinking water straight from the tap.
As someone who grew up in different countries around the world I am so happy to live in the U.K.
Even the rain that brings us green grass is welcome in this household.

I agree with most of the other posters who have already mentioned everything I could have thought of (especially josieanne)?

adaunas Fri 05-Nov-21 08:06:14

Thanks for this thread M0nica. It’s good to remember all the good things about our country and this is a great list.
I’d like to add the primary school children who did their best through lockdown but greeted us with delight when school reopened for them.

MerylStreep Fri 05-Nov-21 07:59:32

I’m putting the inventions list up again because I’m so proud of what this country has shared with the world.
And yes I am proud despite the fact that in some quarters its viewed as being a nationalist.

Definitely the different Seasons
Tolerance of different religious views
Welcoming and support of immigrants to this country
Generosity to charities
Even the weather!!

Sparklefizz Fri 05-Nov-21 07:54:49

Thanks for this thread M0nica.

I love our country. Our countryside is very varied for such small islands, and beautiful.

We are tolerant and generous. We raise millions for Children in Need, Comic Relief, etc. even when we may be hard up ourselves.

We are free. We are stoic. We try to be fair. I love the British sense of humour and our self deprecation.

I could go on and on but previous posters have already said it.

Iam64 Fri 05-Nov-21 07:53:56

Nhs
Education system not perfect but definitely good
Police service that polices by consent, good officers outnumber the bad
Beautiful countryside that varies by the county
Freedom
Sense of irony
People smile at each other easily

Aldom Fri 05-Nov-21 07:51:56

For Uptrend please read... Upthread!!

Aldom Fri 05-Nov-21 07:50:57

Thank you MOnica. Everything that's been said uptrend and even the weather. I love our changing seasons.
I'm especially thankful for the NHS this week. A friend fell badly and I was able to take her to the Minor Injuries Unit at a local hospital, where she was well taken care of. We have so much to be thankful for and proud of in this country. I wouldn't live anywhere else.

Lincslass Fri 05-Nov-21 07:49:15

Josie, a great post.

Lincslass Fri 05-Nov-21 07:47:30

Lovely positive, on the whole thread, about our beautiful country. Love the diversity of our landscape, and our seas. Watching Wild Celtic last night, stunning. Lovely caring people.

Can’t you get clean water out of a tap in any other country?

Yes you can, many you can’t. This though is about Britain and the best things about it.

Oopsadaisy1 Fri 05-Nov-21 07:44:02

We aren’t usually fried in the Summer and up to our eyes in snow in the Winter.

lavenderzen Fri 05-Nov-21 07:42:53

Our countryside is beautiful, especially my part of the world in Derbyshire.

ginny Fri 05-Nov-21 07:38:39

I second everything that has already been said.
