Idle thoughts really…….

Browsing through the Daily Mail (yes sorry) website whilst drinking my coffee. An article on Kate Middleton (ouch) no longer taking a handbag with her on engagements.

My first thought was where does she keep her hankie.

Then I went on to I suppose an aide carries it. But would you want to have to turn to an aide in the middle of a visit and ask for a hankie!

Then I went on to you know I’ve never seen a Royal (or any other celebrity) photographed/filmed blowing their nose.

Do they squirt something up it beforehand to stop it running?

I mean, even without a cold I still have to blow my nose sometimes, particularly in the open air.

Do I have an over runny nose?

All observations on my Idle thoughts welcome….

Hello there, Peasblossom!

I was quite captivated with your post. So I did a spot of googling. It appears a few of them suffer with hay fever and when a sneeze comes they just sneeze into their hand!

I hadn't looked at all the images but in that article but have now seen Prince Charles has an enormous handkerchief smile

Interesting thoughts, Peaseblossom.
Maybe she tucks a tissue into the top of her knickers. My nose sometimes runs for no apparent reason, strangely. The royals must have a way of ensuring that this doesn't happen. Have we ever seen the Queen, or any of them, actually blow their nose?

I love idle thoughts Peasblossom while waiting for my bread to prove.
My nose is usually quite dry so I never need to blow it when out. I don't think I even carry tissues so would have to use my shirt if it came to it!

As for Kate and handbags, I think as she is quite a modern hands-on royal who gets stuck in, maybe she prefers her hands free.

Peasblossom Fri 12-Nov-21 10:54:25

Oh Zoejory. yuck, yuck, yuck?

Henetha. I did wonder if she tucked it in her bra, But imagine being photographed fishing for that!

henetha Fri 12-Nov-21 10:56:12

{grin} Peaseblossom.. That's quite a thought!

Nothing to add at present, just wanted to say that this is a fabulous thread Peasblossom

She (Catherine) used to nearly always carry a little clutch bag, which she did clutch in front of her. She seemed to use it as a sort of comfort thing to hide behind. Her famous mother-in-law used to stride out confidently with her clutch bag at her side.

Now Catherine has grown in confidence and style, she probably doesn’t need a prop to shelter behind.

I realise that doesn’t answer the question though….

With this coming Sunday in mind, it seems even crying doesn't necessitate a hanky amongst female royals.

AGAA4 Fri 12-Nov-21 11:13:57

I always have tissues with me as cold air makes my nose run.
I have never seen any of the royals blowing their noses. Must feel it's not a good look.

Peasblossom Fri 12-Nov-21 11:17:01

It’s not a good look, I’m all to conscious of that when I have to fish about for a tissue?

But using your glove is worse. Or sniffing. Or ? the dewdrop!

Peasblossom Fri 12-Nov-21 11:18:39

I take back the glove remark. HM was wiping a tear.

That’s refined.

I’ve never owned a real hankie and I can’t remember the last time I had to blow my nose. I carry tissues just I case with public toilets.
My girls and all the young people I know just carry their phone.

lemongrove Fri 12-Nov-21 11:25:34

I expect she has a pocket?
I sometimes go out and don’t want to carry a bag, even a shoulder or messenger bag, let alone a handbag.I put a couple of tissues, credit card and keys in a pocket.

TillyTrotter Fri 12-Nov-21 11:33:36

She would always have a hankie/tissue handy if she tucked it up one of her sleeves.
That’s what I do but occasionally have been embarrassed if it falls out onto a table when eating or drinking.

I know phones have heaps of uses, but didn’t realise they could be used to blow your nose.

Incredible advances in technology! ;-)

But how many of you carry a handbag these days? I certainly haven’t for two or three years. I have my phone…..and hardly ever use cash!

Eeuw! Snotty hands! So unhygienic, I hope they wash them before any handshakes. Duchess of Cambridge is using a tissue in one of those photos.

Don't you think a woman gets to a certain age where buying any item of clothing without a pocket in it seems like madness? Perhaps Kate has arrived there.

When I was tiny my mum would pin a hanky on the inside of my skirt with a safety pin so that I could always 'Have a clean hanky and say please and thankyou' wherever I went.

sodapop Fri 12-Nov-21 15:27:43

My nose is always runny, when it's cold, eating curry, when it's hot. Couldn't manage without tissues in my bag.

ayse Fri 12-Nov-21 15:34:21

My nose and my eyes run in the cold so I always carry a few tissues with me. Most of my outdoor clothes have proper pockets and even one has zips. I generally carry a smallish rucksack with my bag inside. Once I get into town I put the bag over my head and carry it in front of me. The rucksack is used for carrying shopping and more tissues, just in case.

Hetty58 Fri 12-Nov-21 15:35:17

I haven't carried a bag for at least thirty years - except maybe at weddings and formal events. My tissue is kept up my sleeve!
