I remember ice inside the windows, condensation running down the glass. Going to bed wearing a jumper. Having a tin bath in front of the real fire. It was normal back then. My AC have never known anything like it and that's part of the reason that generation is careless I think. They would not dream of mending a hole in something - they'd rather throw it away. Such a shame we didn't teach them to be frugal because it's their world.

...and those under 30 being the group that gets so outraged about older people's emission producing habits, they, themselves, make little or no effort to look at how they live and what they can do.
Agreed, did you see the appalling mess they left behind after the 2019 Glastonbury, including tents? Just Google. Truly shocking that young people would care so little for the environment. But then the Insulate Britain mob are all hypocrites, driving around in gas-guzzling cars and with their own houses not insulated. What is wrong with people today, they all talk the talk but don't walk the walk.

I remember having a coal fire and then we used paraffin heaters

And frosty ferns on the inside of windows!

I think generalizing about generations and pitting one group against another just isnt helpful. Presumably these young people were raised by our generation so ...

Chestnut we had just that happen two years ago. Two weeks without gas - in November - and an uncertain supply for the rest of the winter.

We managed with a wood stove and electric appliances. It is worth remembering that gas central heating boilers use electricity as well and the failure of gas or electricity switches the heating off. We are used to both.

My thoughts put in a better way M0nica

Well I almost wish the gas supply would shut down for a few days! Then they might think to put some clothes on, realising what 'cold' actually is. We have to remember these youngsters have never known anything but luxury and comfort. They don't remember the old days before central heating. I remember having a coal fire and then we used paraffin heaters. We wore warm clothes in winter.

My AC are roughly the same age, but all have an eye on the budget. Including watching their 'footprint'

Your friends daughter obviously doesnt follow Greta, or the news grin

What puzzles me, is that with global warming such an immediate problem and so well known and those under 30 being the group that gets so outraged about older people's emission producing habits, they, themselves, make little or no effort to look at how they live and what they can do.

As OP says, more clothes on and turn the thermostat down also switching lights off, drawing curtains, even in double glazed properties, swapping all bulbs for LEDs.

My DD, who is 29, has just bought her first flat. I went round yesterday and the heating is turned down, she was wearing a jumper and has a cosy blanket for sitting in her rocking chair which used to belong to her Granny. She’s always been an old soul and does love winter for the coziness.

Maybe she was brought up in a house heated to subtropical temperatures? People do get into strange habits. My son lives in NZ and is used to wearing shorts, year round. Last time he was here, he thought it ridiculous that I suggested he wore trousers!

Unbelieveable.

I have been quite close to a friends daughter over the last few years. She is in her late 30's and is a single Mum to 2 boys. She phoned me last week as she was worried about her gas bill since the prices have gone up as she has been watching her daily spend increase on her smart meter.
I called in that afternoon and she answered the door in a pair of jeans and a sleeveless top with the heating on full. When I suggested she put something warmer on she looked at me blankly and said she hadn't thought of that.
What planet are this generation on?
