What qualities do you most admire in your friends

A willingness to communicate and a generous nature - the latter isn't meant in a monetary sense but in being open-minded and kind. If there's a difference of opinion it can be expressed with tolerance and an understanding that we're not all the same.

I hate mean-spiritedness - if someone has a stroke of luck it's not hard to say, "Well done" or "Lucky you" whether it's a lotto win or an accomplishment of some other sort.

Discretion and empathy. A friend you can off load to and know it will go no further.

Do you think your friends naturally assume different roles?
Some of my friends are natural sympathisers, they care about everyone and always seem to know the right thing to say. Others deal with things in more practical ways and will bake a cake or pick some flowers, others deal with tougher things with humour.
Some are extrovert some less so but all have so much to give and they do.

I didn't realise I valued reliability in a friend until one of them stopped being 'reliable', my young daughter said it is called 'flaky'. I suppose it goes hand in hand with trust. I dropped her when she tried to make contact again when lockdown lifted, I would rather be alone than sitting waiting with a last minute 'can't make it' text.

Out at lunch one day when a friend pointed to her own top teeth asked me if I was saving that broccoli until later.
A mixture of humour and honesty which saved me from the embarrassment of getting home and finding that I’d been a grinning forest all afternoon.

Seriously, all are kind and non-judgmental - although we have very varied opinions on a lot of things, our differences can be put to one side without harming the friendship.

We always laugh a lot when we’re together (we’ve wept together on occasion too) which is why I love having them as friends.

Loyalty and kindness I think. I have good friends who epitomise those qualities. I try to reciprocate similarly.

There are exceptions perhaps. Would you stick by a friend who had an affair with another friend’s husband? That’s where honesty kicks in.
