Ooh Hello! How nice to see you at my front door! C’mon in ... ?
(148 Posts)Hi everyone! It’s December, dark and dismal. And sadly, Lonely for some. I had this idea just now. Open our front doors to all our virtual friends on GN! Here, Stand at my front door and this is what you see. You are very welcome. Come on in, take the weight off, kick off your shoes and let me pour you a drink.
What would I see if I came to YOUR front door?
More or less 360 degree view of my hall. Peculiar design because the house is L-shaped…
The wreath is my one concession to decorations, but will be taken down when we visit DD and family for Christmas.
Right O! Hopefully you’ll all have patience as I’m not sure how much the ‘hostess with the mostest’ I’d make. Grandmadinosaur I’ve definitely got sherry. I’ve just poured a Croft’s Original. Will that do? It’s ages since we had that in. I just sent Himself into the larder earlier (Sainsbury’s) for a bottle. Goodness, Grandmadinosaur I was waiting for you to say ‘that’s fine’! Now look, it’s so full it’s about to drip onto the coffee table. No matter, I’ll fetch a mug. Friends are more important than feelings, as we know.
?
Now who’s that at the door? ?
As I sit here reading about our lovely, comfortable homes and imagine each other residing therein - I think how lucky we are that we live in the computer age. Honestly I've been WFH for nearly 2 years now - all the kids have left home and started their own families - Mr Dot works outwith the home and most days I don't see or speak to a soul. I visit GN constantly throughout the day - seldom posting but just reading your lovely posts and it really does help me to feel less isolated.
MIL is staying over tonight - it's her birthday tomorrow - she will be 88 and is the last surviving parent (while she is with us I can kid myself that I am not old - because I'm NOT the oldest in the family lol)
She has no clue about computers - lives alone and has been widowed for nearly 40 years. How it would enrich her life to be able to reach out to other grans (and great grans) and have lovely invitations and chats like this.
A small dry white LauraNorder? I’ve got half a bottle of Viognier in the fridge from dinner this afternoon with my stepfather. Although he had a pint in the bar downstairs he’s one for a wee dram when he comes up here to eat so there’s some left. You’re welcome! What’s that ... a straw you say? Okay I’ll have a look in the drawer. Just sit yourself down on the sofa while there’s still a space.
Cheese twists anyone?
Oh, there’s a knock at the door ... ?
Good job it’s open.
C’mon in whoever you are! x
Ha ha Urms well it will be my first Sherry of the season so might as well go large ? and yes Croft will go down nicely thank you.
Cheers
Oh my, it’s Dottygran she’s arrived with an overnight bag! Bless, I didn’t realise she was so lonely WFH. Actually, seriously it’s been a trying time for many in that situation hasn’t it?
Dump your bag Dotty you’ll have to sit amongst us all a while. Get to know one another. What’s your tipple? Hey - grandMattie looks comfy on that sofa but when we turf her out later, that unfolds to a sofa bed. I’ll get Himself to sort out some bedding after. He’s in the bedrooom (our only other space!) watching the Grand Prix.
I might need his help to pour some drinks ... ???
Oh it’s TillyTrotter! do come in! How lovely of you to visit. Did you have far to travel? Your photo looks so inviting. Your home sounds fab for Christmas! Puts me to shame and I thought I was doing okay. I do love your half glazed door. I’ve always wanted one of those. Himself reminds me I can’t have everything in life. He’s right of course. Doesn’t stop me being envious. And that throw over the sofa looks nice and soft.
Now what can I get you? What? A Cherry B? Really? Ages since I’ve heard of one of those. I’ll go and check dear but I think you’ll be out of luck.... please just don’t ask for a ‘snowball’ when I get back.
?
Thank you for the invite Urmstongran! I would have been here sooner but I stopped to admire your lovely Christmas lights.
Where shall I put my shoes? I've brought my new slippers with me, don't want to clutter up your lovely hall! Please can I have a hot chocolate? ( I've brought a big bag of mini marshmallows toppings for us all to share)
It's nice and warm in here, very cosy! Hello everyone! x
Thank you Urms .your home is so warm and welcoming.
I am enjoying my dinner watching the snooker. not really watching but it's company
I was musing over why some days go well for no apparent reason and others go badly.
Today has been expensive. I bought my DD a handwoven silk scarf for her birthday only to read that the payment for my veg box hasn't gone through for the past 7 weeks. Ouch.
I'll have a glass of that cool white please.
Urmstongran
I agree Dottygran ... that your gaff looks posh mokryna! Very nice. Is the kettle on? Or better still, something this time of an evening in a glass perhaps? Just a large one for me ... I can’t stay long.
?
Yes, totally like that ‘through the Keyhole programme ’. And why not? We all like a nosy...
I’m not a bit posh but sit your self down and I’ll put the kettle on. What would you like to drink. I have real English tea and lots of herbal ones especially Christmas flavours, being an English person typically French people think I am short of a brew. Sorry no alcohol in the home.
Oh god. I’m already getting mixed up. tanith it’s your gaff with the half glazed door and soft throw! It’s TillyTrotter with the penguin and the cyclamen. Goodness, it must be because both your names begin with ‘T’.
Either that, or the fact I’m up into my second Croft’s Original.
Ooh GrandmaDinosaur looks like you’re almost ready for another too. I’m not sure I’ve got a bigger mug I’d heard you could sup ... I just thought you’d last a bit longer. No matter. There’s plenty yet, if you could maybe sip? It’s laughing with grandMattie I think. You gulp a bit if you don’t mind me saying. Yes I know, she has such tales to tell. I’ve heard most of them, she does tend to repeat herself. What that grandMattie? Another creme de Menthe? Okay, if you’re sure, it’s no problem, just that I’ve never known anyone fancy more than one of those before.
Actually your hallway looks posh too. Not creme de Menthe. But Pistachio maybe? Lovely colour anyway.
god my house is such a mess

This is why I love gransnet.
Such a lovely thread ?
Welcome LindaPat and Grammaretto! Nice you both arrived together! Actually I heard you both giggling as I walked up the hall to you. Pop on your slippers LindaPat .. ooh those American Tan tights look do look colourful don’t they? I didn’t realise you could still buy those.
Now girls what to drink? The fridge is full. No Grammaretto we don’t have a cellar. It’s an apartment. Yes I appreciate what you’re saying. I’m sure reds do settle better down there if you have one. Ah right. A white? Sorry! Either my hearing’s going or it’s Dotty in there. Yes, she’s staying overnight. She’s sat next to ‘Alexa’. I think she’s requesting something. tanith is smiling. No, I’ve no idea what’s going on in there. I keep having to come to the door. I need a butler but Himself is watching the Grand Prix. Right girls, glasses ... go on in, find a seat.
?
Oops here is the view from my front door ?
I’m loving this thread but as my new bungalow is a bit of a do-er upper, I’m not showing a pic of my tiny hallway until the carpets have been fitted a week on Tuesday. ?
Actually mokryna would you mind putting on the kettle? I think one of your teas would be just the ticket for GrandmaDinosaur. I couldn’t help but notice her mug is empty again. She’ll thank us in the morning.
Goodness Dotty could you ask ‘Alexa’ to turn the volume down a bit? I’m sure I heard a knock at the door. Just off to check.
Cheers Urms, the hostess with the mostest ?
Urms I would love to see your face if any Gransnetters really did turn up at your front door!
You have said which part of Manchester you live and several mentions of where your apartment block is in your town, so it’s not inconceivable that someone reasonably local could think, what the hell, I’m taking her at her word?
Bit far for me from Berkshire though, especially as I really avoid driving in the dark!
