Diana and Charles Engagement

I was watching a documentary about Princess Diana on Netflix last night and started wondering what public reaction would have been if William or Harry had got engaged, in their early 30s, to a 19 year old teenager who had only been on the scene for a few months.

I think there would have been considerable disquiet, not the general delight and cheering that greeted the announcement in 1981.

Obviously even then some people felt the whole thing was ridiculous, but there was also huge public support for the marriage.

Times have changed.

Anniebach if neither Harry nor Diana are to be believed where can I find a reliable source of information about the RF?

Diana was ambitious, she wanted to 'best' her sister Sarah. I also think she wanted to be Princess of Wales. She was infatuated by the Prince of Wales rather than Charles the man.
Charles had to marry someone suitable and in those days that meant someone from the right background. He was being pressured to find a wife and Diana fitted the criteria.
They were never right for each other.

She certainly didn’t avoid the camera’s on her way to work,
and certainly wasn’t shy

Camilla wanted to marry Parker Bowles, she was in love with him, I saw the wedding photographs at the time, this was long before the Camilla loved Charles started in the press, several years before .

I believe Charles knew and dated Camilla before Parker Bowles but never got her to the altar. She then met Parker Bowles and the rest is history.

I never believed Diana didn’t realise that skirt was transparent…

I was given to understand that Camilla didn't marry Charles because she didn't want to be in the Royal spotlight. After all it is a huge responsibility marrying an heir to the throne and your life will be under constant scrutiny for ever more. I can't blame her, but Charles was upset so I believe as he had set his heart on her.

Did we know that Diana was over sensitive back then, when they got engaged? confused.

Later on, maybe, but not initially.

Anniebach Wed 08-Dec-21 15:40:09

The countess of Wessex nearly lost the plot ? Rubbish ,

Ladyleftfieldlover Wed 08-Dec-21 15:12:47

Charles had proposed to at least a couple of his girlfriends [ladies the same age as him] and they turned him down. Maybe they knew about Camilla or maybe they didn't fancy the constant, round the clock lack of privacy etc. Kate still doesn't look that comfortable and she is still far too thin. Meghan would and did manage because of her history of being an actress in the public eye. The Countess of Wessex nearly lost the plot when she first married Edward and of course Fergie has never been the same since! I don't think anything prepares you for Royal life, except having been born into it.

Anniebach Wed 08-Dec-21 15:03:34

Oh , Diana said .

Beswitched Wed 08-Dec-21 14:57:04

It's been well documented. Diana also said she had only met Charles a handf of times before the engagement

Anniebach Wed 08-Dec-21 14:54:58

How is it known they were only together a few months Beswitched ?

Diana hadn’t only been on the scene for a few months, she lived in Sandringham before they moved to Althorp.

Charles visited Althorp when he was dating Diana’s sister Sarah.

I meant on the scene as in being a girlfriend of Charles.

Well it was 40 years ago and she was marrying the heir to the throne. It was fine for Harry to marry a divorcee.

^Why anyone ever thought a over-sensitive nineteen year old from a broken home a suitable bride for any member of the House of Windsor beats me, and did then.^

I agree.... but apparently the grandmothers of both of them thought it was a perfect match.

Huh?

You have to meet some sort of criteria in order to be good enough for the Royal family? Are we giving pedigree to humans now and both parents must be shown to potential spouces before buying?

Anniebach Wed 08-Dec-21 13:51:25

Camilla was in love with Parker Bowles, it’s all rubbish that she and Charles wanted to marry when they dated.

Has Charles or Camilla ever said they wanted to marry then ? No. All made up by the media and Diana.

If we choose to believe everything printed then we believe the
night before her wedding Diana was so excited, warbling
‘Tomorrow I will be the Princess of Wales. This was said by someone working in Clarence House.

maddyone Wed 08-Dec-21 13:43:12

I don’t know why there was such a big emphasis on Diana being a virgin. I realise that she couldn’t possibly be pregnant with another man’s child, but once it was established that she was not, I should have thought that would have been enough. I believe the reason he couldn’t marry Camilla when they were both young was that she wasn’t a virgin.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 08-Dec-21 13:19:25

I know someone who regularly went shooting with the Spencers at Althorp back then. What he has to say casts Diana in a rather different light to the popular perception of the naive virginal young woman. I say no more.

Anniebach Wed 08-Dec-21 13:14:31

Yes she was 16, and knew the royal family well, the Queen is Godmother to her brother
