I’m definitely going bonkers - or pre-senile?!

Yesterday, to use up some leftover dried fruit from ?puds and mincemeat, I thought I’d make a barm brack. (A sort of tea bread.)

So having looked up the recipe - I hardly ever make it - I put the fruit and sugar to soak overnight in cold tea.

This morning I carefully cut out a piece of greaseproof paper for the bottom of the loaf tin.

I then greased the loaf tin and poured the mixture in - having forgotten to line the bottom or add the egg!

So I emptied and washed the loaf tin, re greased it, added the bottom lining and tipped the mixture in - having forgotten again to add the egg!

It is now finally in the oven.
The crumb of comfort I’m clinging to, is that having needed to look at the recipe again this morning, I did remember that it was on page 62. Is there still hope?

I discovered this morning that the chilli powder I put in my porridge does not taste nearly as good as my usual cinnamon !

My mum once added salt to a cake instead of sugar - because someone had refilled the wrong containers....

I once made toffee instead of fudge because I left some key ingredients out.

Recently I cooked a lovely main dish and after an hour I turned the oven off. I was due to take the dish to a friend so left it to cool. 4 hours later I came to take the dinner out of the oven. It was a blackened mess. I had turned the oven dial the wrong way to MAX!

I was annoyed last week after the big storm to find my container of cyclamen had vanished from the front. I searched down the park but gave up as the wind had been so strong.
A few days later I found it in the greenhouse where I had put it for safety after the previous storm.

years ago my late mother had an aga style cooker with a slow oven part. she was classic at putting things in the slow oven and forgetting them! either that or she would put the food in the normal oven then leave them! I recall clearly the charcoaled roast potatoes found 3 days after the Sunday lunch! Or the rice pudding left in the slow oven for a good week!

Mummer Tue 21-Dec-21 17:49:31

????? join the club! I made a massive macaroni cheese and popped it in the oven to finish......with the cheese???

My friend and her DH were coming to Sunday lunch. He is a fussy eater, she on the other hand will eat almost anything I put in front of them. DH however must have gravy.

I carefully strained the meat juices and skimmed the fat from the top. Poured the fat back into the roasting tin and stirred in the flour, added the meat juices, some of the vegetable water and stock, stirring and stirring so it wouldn't go lumpy. It was at that point that I noticed some scraps of green veg in the gravy. I took a fine strainer and poured the gravy through, forgetting to put anything underneath to catch the gravy. shock

I screamed as the gravy disappeared down the drain. I didn't have any granules either, but I do now!

My very good friend made a huge pan of delicious mulled wine for a new year drinks do. Then tipped it all through a sieve to remove the spices etc … straight down the sink! Ooh she was cross smile

Talk about crumpets to the rescue, I nipped to the corner shop for a small loaf and not long returned with 2 boxes of cat-food which wasn't desperate, and black bags, when I got in I was breadless ! 2 crumpets left in the packet but thankfully more in the freezer for breakfast tomorrow, to defrost.
So it's scrambled eggs with grated cheese on crumpets for my tea today and no toast afterwards. Ah well, I'll eat cake grin

I put steam puddings in a cool oven they were raw but delicious about 5 hours later,I still hadn't remembered to turn the oven up.
Also put baking potatoes in the oven and forgot about them I never did find out where they went.

I sent an e-mail to an old schoolfriend apologising for not having sent her a Christmas card this year.

Back came the prompt reply, "You are having a senior moment, You did send me a card".

She teases me because she has just had her 69th birthday and I my 70th,

So, don't worry, we are all doing it.

Right now I am looking for a plastic bag full of lameta for the tree - I know it is in the attic, but I just cannot find it.

Oh yes, I forgot the fluffy teapot ?
Forgot to empty the teabags before we went too.

Calistemon Tue 21-Dec-21 14:31:26

Juliet

We used to empty and wipe out the fridges and freezer if we were going away for some time. I propped open the doors before we went so they didn't go mouldy inside.

My kind neighbour who came in to water plants, pick up post etc saw the open fridges and freezer and shut the doors for me. They were lovely and black when we got home again ?

Calistemon Tue 21-Dec-21 14:26:35

This one isn't my fault ?

I went into the utility room, shut the door and the handle came off, no matter what I did I couldn't fit it back on. There was no point going out and round to the front door because I had no key. DH was out.

At least the room got a tidy up while I was stuck in there.

I went into the garage and locked the side door behind me as the main door was open and I didn’t want the dogs getting out. When I had finished in there I was going to take the key out the side door, go out the main door, through the house and put the key back in the side door from the other side. Luckily, just in time I realised I could go out the way I came in, but it was a close call. I was really worried about my ability to make decisions.

Chocolatelovinggran Tue 21-Dec-21 13:16:56

Oh, thank you, everyone- I have had such fun reading these. I loved Juliet's fluffy courgettes. Now, if anyone can suggest where I have "tidied away" the bag containing all of my knitting needles, I would be grateful ...

Maria59 Tue 21-Dec-21 13:01:11

I once soaked cauliflower in salted water prior to cooking grated cheese made sauce and poured over uncooked cauliflower ?

Nicaveron Tue 21-Dec-21 12:56:46

Have previously forgotten to. Put sugar in the crumble topping and also forgot to put any in the custard! No one said anything

Milest0ne Tue 21-Dec-21 12:50:41

I am intolerant to egg so I make several cakes without egg including a Grasmere Cake from Good Housekeeping. They always turn out right so don't worry about leaving out egg. There are several substitutes you can use instead of egg. (for those with an allergy rather than memory lapse) Hope your cake turns out well

I set my breadmaker on timer - cam in from work to lovely baking smell. Opened it and I had a tin full of hot flour - I had forgotten to add the water

Buttonjugs Tue 21-Dec-21 12:24:55

Maggie from GBBO forgot to put flour in a bake, on telly in front of millions!

Supergranuation Tue 21-Dec-21 12:22:17

I'm rejoicing! This thread makes me feel so much better! ?

After hunting for the tv remote for several days, I finally found it in the pantry cupboard on the shelf with the bread and eggs. ??‍♀️??‍♀️
