Last minute grocery deliveries

As a lockdown convert to grocery deliveries, I have been really pleased with this service. I was pleased too, to secure a delivery for Thursday, 23rd. But am I likely to be left high and dry on Thursday, with many items unavailable? In previous years have others had a last minute delivery? I guess I could get stuff on Friday, if available, but I was obviously hoping to avoid actual shopping.

My sister has just texted me to say our local Asda is bedlam. Nowhere to park, no trolleys. My husband has just gone up there on the bus for a couple of things. He won't be a happy bunny.

Well I got my Dauphinoise.

Maw I am making an Indonesian rijsttafel, numerous desserts, cooking the turkey and trimmings surely I deserve to have an easy meal with steak and ready made potatoes?
In the past I have done it myself just not this year.

The only sub is loose coriander instead of pot!

You should be able to get an online delivery Susie but under £40 they apply a surcharge, well Tesco do anyway. Perhaps have less frequent deliveries, say every 10 or 14 days?

We are just about fully stocked up, apart from a veggie box plus milk delivery tomorrow, yet DH has booked another supermarket delivery on 27 December! We tend to get heavy non- perishable items eg jars of mayonnaise, cold drinks etc so in a way it is not a problem, but just seems excessive to me.
It must be part of his hoarding instinct!

I had my usual Asda slot this morning expecting substitutions or missing items - often 6 or 7 in a big order, but was pleasantly surprised to only have 2subs, both of a dearer brand. And all for the price of the cheap own brand I ordered, not like some places where you have to pay the extra

Sainsburys substituted my order for fresh turkey gravy with onion gravy granules which I sent back. I guess I’ll have to be less lazy and make my own.

I had an excellent delivery from the co-op. It came the same day all the items were available and I had a text to say the delivery was 2 mins away and another text to say it was here.

Mine came on Monday not a lot missing just a couple of replacements that were acceptable.

We took delivery of our Christmas order from ASDA today (Weds). There were 8 substitutions, just different size packs, and no 'out of stock' items. They notified us of the changes by email before they delivered. We had ordered a large turkey crown but they only had a medium one, but the gammon joint they sent was larger than we ordered, so it balances out, there'll be enough to go round. They delivered right on time, the driver was very cheery in his Santa hat and helped to unload the crates for us.

If your order is being picked from your local store there's always a risk that items in high demand will have sold out on the shop floor before they pick your order.

Tomorrow our bakery & dairy order will come from a local bakery, they bake to order so we know we'll get what we asked for. They even deliver on Christmas Day up to midday! Our village shop will also be open Christmas morning for those forgotten items. Last year customers were offered a mince pie and fruit punch to the strains of carols playing in the background!

@GermansheperdsMum

Thanks for the reply but I think I’ll brave M&S tomorrow for the perishables after I’ve collected the meat and fish from the butchers and fishmongers.

We received our Tesco delivery today. Normally excellent. This time we had 20 substitutions and 8 items unavailable.
The delivery driver was lovely and so apologetic. I said don't worry not your fault, we will gave to manage. Its not the end of the world.

Update from Tesco delivery just now:
3x GU pot packs ordered, 2 delivered
Loose sprouts replaced by packaged
Loose parsnips replaced by packaged

That’s it, everything else as ordered. I’m pleased.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 22-Dec-21 14:47:49

Now if I were you Susie I’d be going to M&S first to make sure they haven’t sold out! I so wish I had an M&S within striking distance or that they delivered out here! The ads are mouthwatering! Good luck!

Dragonfly, can I come for your Indonesian rijstafel please? When we lived in Singapore it was a Sunday lunch tradition at some of the big hotels, a huge curry table buffet. DH and I loved it!

I received my on line groceries from Sainsbury’s s on the 21st all looked good only two substitutes except the salmon bits were out of date, I phoned customer services and was told straight away I’d get the cost paid back into my account for the next order. I think I can live without the salmon I’ve got more food than I need for Christmas Day. In fact I’m needing to get that big bird out the freezer to thaw in time for the 25th. All the veggies received were in their own trays just ready to pop into the oven now to make a honey and mustard glaze for the wee sausages to eat hot or cold.

I’m so pleased with Sainsbury’s on line shopping I’ve already booked my next delivery slot - call me Mrs organiser.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 22-Dec-21 15:19:00

I have my weekly slots booked up to 18 Jan. I always have them booked up 3-4 weeks ahead, only way to make sure I get them when I want. And Tesco’s delivery saver plan not only gives you free delivery Tuesday-Thursday it gives you access to Christmas and Easter slots a week ahead of release to everyone else.

Lexisgranny Wed 22-Dec-21 15:27:41

We have had our supermarket order delivered since the beginning of the first lockdown. Anticipating the last minute shortages we arranged for our Christmas order to be delivered on. Monday. All fine. We will pop out early tomorrow for fresh goods. We have also booked slots for the weeks following Christmas.

Bazza Wed 22-Dec-21 15:34:37

Had large Ocado delivery today, a couple of sensible substitutions but two packs of butter were just “out of stock.” I can’t believe they have no butter available so why not substitute another brand? Now I’ll have to brave a supermarket which I was hoping to avoid. Sent an email having a bit of a moan so feel better now!

GreyKnitter Wed 22-Dec-21 15:39:26

We had a delivery from Tesco on Monday and only a couple of minor substitutions. Nothing missing. Good luck. ???

Calistemon Wed 22-Dec-21 15:55:26

Interesting that most posters (including me) have received most of their orders.
After the predictions of no turkeys, no vegetables, no deliveries up to Christmas it's a relief to hear.
I didn't order a turkey but I'm assuming there was no shortage in the end?

I hope you get everything you need Lizzie72

I do need to battle M&S tomorrow, though (eek)

This is me as well. Put a bottle of malt whisky on to hold the slot, then if I forget to add to it we have the essentials ???

BBbevan Wed 22-Dec-21 16:45:44

Callistemon we were in M&S this morning at eight. Very busy but full shelves. Good luck.

Calistemon Wed 22-Dec-21 16:49:31

Thanks, BBbevan
A friend popped round with a present late morning, he said he'd been to M&S at 8 am to 'avoid the rush' and it was chaos, he had to queue to get into the car park!

I don't need much and the farm shop may have what I need (perhaps)

4allweknow Wed 22-Dec-21 16:55:56

Did have a slot for Thursday mid day but, having been in supermarkets yesterday and saw the size of the shopping in trolleys along with very low stocks on shelves, even fruit and veg decided to cancel my slot. Came home looked at my order and went out today to buy the bits and pieces I thought essential (no parsnips for one thing and selection of potatoes very poor). Have a Christmas food collection at M&S for Thursday morning. I have been collecting items eg wine over the past few weeks to avoid disappointment and the mad crush.

Christmas doesn’t come in a delivery van!!
