Last minute grocery deliveries

As a lockdown convert to grocery deliveries, I have been really pleased with this service. I was pleased too, to secure a delivery for Thursday, 23rd. But am I likely to be left high and dry on Thursday, with many items unavailable? In previous years have others had a last minute delivery? I guess I could get stuff on Friday, if available, but I was obviously hoping to avoid actual shopping.

I did my collected my click and collect yesterday. Just two substitutions which I did refuse. Tesco put a free pack of their mince pies in smile

Tesco delivered Monday. 2 substitutes that were acceptable. Lovely driver wearing mask and gloves. Very impressed and thankful for Tesco.

I received my Ocado this morning. Just one missing item (nothing significant). Collecting my turkey this afternoon from M&S. If there are any issues I have a small spare in the freezer.

I had my delivery today and ocado sent me a text saying they had had mechanical difficulties and it meant a lot of my items were missing or substituted. When I looked at my receipt it was missing Vimto grin red Leicester and beef mince and it had substituted hula hoops in place of french fries and duck spring rolls instead of vegetable and it has given me white leghorn eggs in place of brown eggs - so hardly the ruining of Christmas for me wink

Regarding Iceland - I looked yesterday and no slots available before Christmas here.

Hopefully those using Iceland will do better than I did...I tried twice and on both occasions only half of what I'd ordered arrived and the use-by dates were literally 24/48 hours.

I've never had an issue with Tesco, lovely delivery drivers, very rare I get a substitution and dates are good.
Can't fault them locally.

I received my delivery this morning from Sainsburys and there were 2 substitutes which had to be returned. I ordered fresh salmon fillets but they sent cooked salmon pieces. I also asked for cauliflower cheese (which I hate making!) and got creamed cabbage instead. Everything else was fine.

I’m just about to place my order ready for delivery tomorrow, I never thought about things being out of stock! But my sister is hosting Christmas dinner and the turkey is already sorted from the local butcher - paid for by me as one of my contributions!

I don’t think I need anything essential, only some more cream for the meringues as the carton I have in will be out of date soon. Everything else is for regular meals for next week, only me to worry about so I can make do.

Come on ladies- Gratin Dauphinoise is easy enough to make assuming you managed to get potatoes?
Ready made? Never!

I agree re Iceland. They do next day delivery. Easy to book. If you spend £40 it's free. They sell most things, although not such a variety as other supermarkets.

I’ve had deliveries from Sainsbury’s for some time now, with very few problems, so not looking for another supermarket. But thanks for the info. Just hoping they send everything I ordered. But life will go on!!

My Ocado, including the turkey is coming today with no subs or deletions. I have yet to hear from Sainsbury so waiting with bated breath as I too ordered Dauphinoise potatoes!

MayBeMaw Wed 22-Dec-21 09:24:33

I popped into Waitrose yesterday and it really was not crowded at all . Plenty on the shelves too.
There should be some bargains among the “festive” fare for those with freezer space!

Bum just seen the receipt. No dauphinoise potatoes. Xmas is ruined.

Being ironic I hope?confused

Decided to get my Xmas Tesco delivery today then another on 27th when family would be here. Now just the two of us and with a lot of non-perishable stuff already purchased and a full freezer neither order is very big! The delivery man has told me about making Xmas Eve deliveries minus turkeys (out of stock) so although the local butcher delivers the meat I always leave at least one day between my Tesco delivery and the shops closing. Good luck all!

I ordered fresh cranberries and Sainsburys delivered raspberries!!

BigBertha1 Wed 22-Dec-21 07:01:09

Long list of substitutes.

Sainsbury delivering this morning for me so if it isn't in there then we manage without it.

I was very annoyed with my morrisons delivery, had email saying an out of stock item. no substitute.... It was 24 loo rolls|
no more in the shop I take it.

Jaxjacky Tue 21-Dec-21 21:59:27

Lizzie72 I’ll let you know tomorrow, Tesco due 2-3 ? just checked and looks ok.

littleflo Tue 21-Dec-21 21:51:49

I don’t think it will be too bad. So many people are cancelling plans, so that will leave some more on the shelves. People by much much more when they are entertaing.

Just had a brilliant delivery from Sainsburys. I ordered six fresh figs. As substitute I got kiwi fruit !
But six bags = 36 fruit. Something didn’t translate well somewhere

The kiwis went back.

I am still laughing!!

???? etc

The last date I could get was last Sunday so we will have to run the gauntlet on Thursday

BBbevan Tue 21-Dec-21 20:30:44

Yes six bags with 6 kiwi fruit in each !!
