What evening meal do you have for Christmas eve.

Mapleleaf Thu 23-Dec-21 23:57:23

Well, Cleo, I’ve scanned through the posts again to double check, and it seems to me that the majority are not having lots of people coming for meals, nor going off out to the pub nor having folks dropping in to join them, but rather it is the poster and their partner (& for some posters, it’s just themselves) who are having the Christmas Eve meal at home. I don’t doubt that a few will be hosting others, but I think most are not.
I’m sorry to read that some of your extended family and friends are or have been suffering from Covid, but I really don’t get the same impression from this thread that you do that the posters who have responded are living on another, Covid Free, planet. Instead, they are sharing what they plan to have for a Christmas Eve meal this year, as the original poster asked. Very few (if any) have intimated that they are hosting lots of others, nor off to the pub, unless I’ve missed something..

The worst of it all is that I burned my pie!

Peartree Fri 24-Dec-21 05:07:02

Well I hope you all enjoy your meals this evening. Im sorry your family has been hit by Covid CLIO and I hope they have a speedy recovery, but I am sure everyone who replied to my post will be carefull what ever they plan. Wishing everyone a very HAPPY CHRISTMAS. ??☃️

I'm making sweet and sour chicken this year with special fried rice and prawn crackers. We had it last year and it proved to be a winner.

M0nica Fri 24-Dec-21 08:10:17

Just because people are COVID free now doesn't mean that they haven't been through what you are going through now Clio. I know it is miserable when family are ill at Christmas because DH was in hospital critically ill last Christmas and, of course, couldn't be visited. Not COVID, but the cause is immaterial and only a few weeks ago, both grandchildren and their mother had COVID.

But for those of us who are hoping to be with family and friends, there will probably more lateral flow tests being taken than presents given.

DanniRae Fri 24-Dec-21 10:27:33

True MOnica - I have just done a lateral flow test - negative - prior to our family get together tomorrow. We are all doing one. tchsmile

I don't want a special meal on Christmas Eve - or Boxing day - just prefer to choose what I fancy (when I'm hungry) from my well stocked fridge or cupboards.

I don't much like planning in advance, I'd rather batch cook things so there's always a selection.

henetha Fri 24-Dec-21 10:40:32

I'm entirely alone today, catching up with last minute chores, so I shall eat something entirely un-Christmassy.
Maybe pasta?
I'm making sausage rolls and mince pies today so shall possibly eat one or two...

Hetty58 Fri 24-Dec-21 10:42:56

CleoPanda, I often get that same impression on here - but this time I think we're just chatting about meals tonight.

Of course, we're all testing today and hoping we can be together tomorrow (at my daughter's place) but certainly not counting on it. There's always a plan B, staying here alone, as I did last year. I can do that again, a bit sad, but no big deal.

Dinahmo Fri 24-Dec-21 11:03:54

Lots of good cooks on here. I've only read the first page and my mouth is watering. If I read the rest I'll be droolin on my keyboard.

I hope that you all have a lovely Christmas and don't worry too much about the amount that you're eating and drinking.

moobox Fri 24-Dec-21 11:08:19

Looking like it will be mulled wine and nachos plus pizzas here

Moggycuddler Fri 24-Dec-21 11:29:19

Macaroni cheese today! Usually something simple and fairly quick, since on the next day there'll be loads of preparing and cooking food.

BStP Fri 24-Dec-21 11:43:39

Always fish pie for us

Silvertwigs Fri 24-Dec-21 11:43:45

annsixty That sounds nice, my GD has just informed me that she going to her Bf’s tonight for a few days, charming!!

hazel93 Fri 24-Dec-21 11:51:08

First time in 30+ years I am not cooking tomorrow - yay !!
Will be the first time DS has taken over, he popped around this morning to borrow serving dishes etc. and to go through his menu. Enough to feed the 5000 !
In light of that DH and I have decided a BLT will be fine !

MissAdventure Fri 24-Dec-21 11:53:36

How exciting! smile

Riggie Fri 24-Dec-21 11:58:46

Roast Gammon. We cook one for having as cold cuts over the holiday so have a hot meal off it.

GreyKnitter Fri 24-Dec-21 12:00:31

When my children were little we always had a simple tea - toasted tea cakes and crumpets, followed by mince pies and Yule log. We went to the children Carol service in the church first too - so a lovely start to Christmas. Now it’s just two of us we’ll have something simple but cooked. Think it’s gammon and jacket potatoes tonight. My husband likes to do all the cooking at Christmas, so I’ll be reading or watching tv!

minxie Fri 24-Dec-21 12:04:13

Every Christmas Eve, we have a carpet picnic. It includes all the usual nibbles with a bottle of something fizzy and we watch some fluffy stuff in TV . It’s bliss

Lewie Fri 24-Dec-21 12:07:13

Traditionally, we have lobster on Christmas Eve. This year it's going to be Lobster Thermidor served with baby new potatoes and a green salad.

Minibookworm Fri 24-Dec-21 12:10:16

It’s KFC for us this evening!

Theoddbird Fri 24-Dec-21 12:17:31

I will have a jacket potato cooked in the multifuel burner and topped with medeterranean veg and maybe a little cheese smile

MissAdventure Fri 24-Dec-21 12:18:33

Oh I do love a jacket spud!

grandMattie Fri 24-Dec-21 12:23:20

Every year, not this one, we have a gammon joint, braised red cabbage and baked potatoes, with mince pies with custard for pudding.
This year, we’re at our veggie DD and family, so goodness knows!

MissAdventure Fri 24-Dec-21 12:24:54

Ooh that sounds lovely! Phwoar!
