Wokeness

I've just been reading an interesting debate on mumsnet about wokeness, why it has developed such negative connotations and what it means to you.

In my view it started off for genuine reasons among people genuinely committed to shaping a more equal world, but has been hijacked by fanatics with no perspective who are doing more harm than good and vapid bandwaggoners always in search of a new 'cause'.

In the process they are creating an Orwellian landscape, becoming the oppressors they are supposed to be standing up to.

The treatment of JK Rowling by on line warriors and the allowing men who identify as women into female changing rooms are two obvious examples.

I guess I’m strange

I think you should always be careful of what you say if you don’t want to cause offense

How would you feel if you had been raped by a man with a penis but identifies as a woman.
When the case got to court you had to refer to him as she. Because that’s how he identifies.

What are those words you want to say but are not “allowed” to say?

In this case the victim couldn’t say He

I think you have to be careful what you say with certain people as everything comes back to the same sad accusations, so best to stay clear as you do in life, mix with people with the same values who are not looking for hidden meanings in just about everything.

I think the sanctimonious, hypocritical utterances and lectures coming from, for instance their Wokenesses the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, safely ensconced in their million pound Californian mansion, sum up wokery pretty well.

That of course along with the seemingly endless list of words and phrases that we are supposed not to be ‘allowed’ to say these days.

I just wish it was all ignored as the nonsense it quite clearly is.

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to bring them into the discussion and insult them.

Not long at all

Beswitched, I was under the impression this thread was about wokeness, the term. Not yet another trans bashing thread.

The trans issue has been mentioned because of the changing room fiasco which is genuine and has really happened in clothes shops. No-one would 'bash' anyone who was actually transgender and on a genuine life journey to change. What worries people is the way a man is allowed to simply 'identify' as a woman and subsequently gain access to women's changing rooms, toilets and even prisons. It just shouldn't be that easy. We all know that women are sometimes fearful of men, have medical or body issues or may simply be virgins who have never been that close to a man. Those women need to be safe in the knowledge they are not going to encounter an apparent 'male' when they are in a 'women only' area.
What the answer is I don't know, but society needs to find an answer. It is wokeness gone mad to allow a man to simply dress as a woman and gain access to women only areas.

Indeed. But one of the very few sites where I can without being threatened. There are a number of women who have lost their jobs or livelihoods because of similar statements. The court cases are available for anyone to see.

vegansrock Tue 28-Dec-21 15:57:54

Galaxy you are allowed to say those things - you just have!

Galaxy Tue 28-Dec-21 15:55:44

Obviously because something hasnt happened to you or those you know it isnt real. I currently dont know anyone with cystic fibrosis I still believe it exists.

True. Also to go over the same tired points. We all know each others perspectives. I just can't see the point in constantly redoing it.

Where is anyone transbashing?

VioletSky Tue 28-Dec-21 15:44:17

Gagajo in real life I don't share views I see that are extreme as it just gives them them what they want, attention and a bigger audience for the message

Ah, so this actually another post using the acts of criminals or extreme voices to undermine sensibly voiced and worthy causes by people who just want equal rights and equality of opportunity.

I'm just very glad this isn't the real world VS. At least in real life it isn't the same old people saying the same old things ad infinitum.

That women are a seperate sex category to men. And are allowed a category of their own. That having to have anal sex six times a day with unpleasant dangerous men is not a job.

Possibly. I see what you mean, but there are those who (as with 'PC gone mad') sneer at any attempt to be considerate to the sensitivities of others, moan about 'snowflakes' and so on.

And nobody has done that on this thread.

No one has my problem with 'sensibly voiced causes'.

Doodledog So I suppose being woke = social awareness so ok, sneering at wokeness = lazy excuse not to engage, so not ok, and thinking you are woke when you are just being a pompous twit = arrogant, so not ok either.
Except the second one (sneering at wokeness) generally applies to the third one (arrogant twits). It doesn't usually apply to genuine social awareness. Therefore sneering at wokeness is fully justified. I think anti-woke people on this thread have 'engaged' and explained their viewpoint so it's not a lazy excuse not to engage.

Doodledog Tue 28-Dec-21 14:14:20

I don't think there is anything wrong with being 'woke', if that means being aware of the feelings of others. Where the term becomes tedious is when it is used to sneer at those who are aware of the feelings of others.

The condescending 'agree with me or you are wrong' behaviour of keyboard warriors, and the violence and aggression of groups such as Trans Rights Activists who threaten dissenters is not about 'wokeness' at all - it is oppressive and self-righteous.

So I suppose being woke = social awareness so ok, sneering at wokeness = lazy excuse not to engage, so not ok, and thinking you are woke when you are just being a pompous twit = arrogant, so not ok either.

Aveline Tue 28-Dec-21 14:06:46

Along with buzz words , woke, snowflake etc we also have 'no platforming' and 'cancelling'. We're all going to be stunned into silence soon at this rate.
