What on earth is the matter with some posters?

Not everyone can leave their homes, may not have family nearby who can visit them and Gransnet might be their link to the outside world.

There are times when one feels strongly enough about an issue to keep posting
There are times when everything else has ground to a halt in a persons life.
It’s fine to disagree with posts but IMO we should not comment on how much time a poster spends or doesn’t spend on GN threads

I may not agree with a lot of posts on various threads and usually try to be polite but there seem to be a lot more rude, unkind and, frankly, aggressive personal attacks lately.
Gransnet has changed so much from the supportive forum it used to be.

So true Callistemon I fear for anyone who now reached out here as I did just over four years ago.

Some of the posts on Gransnet contiue to amaze me, even after all these years.
Germanshepherdsmum @15.44, where on earth do your ideas come from - I have a law degree and I have never met anyone with the ideas you express. Just utter and complete nonsense.

Lizzie72 a very insensitive post. People here reach out for help and understanding, many housebound and in need of the interaction of others.

I’m afraid a law degree is neither here nor there lavendermine. I was a practising solicitor for many years, a partner in City law firms, and can therefore speak from experience rather than just academic theory.

Can I ask you again Germanshepherdsmum about your views on the solicitors and barristers, the judges who are asked to take a Family ticket. Do you sneer and look down on this group of legal people in the way you do criminal lawyers.
Those in the family division also work extremely long hours for less than I pay my plumber.

Not a good idea to compare the validity/ importance/ worthiness of how folks earn a living to get by in life.
We all NEED EACH OTHER . Perhaps that is a thought that should be kept in mind when casting aspersions.

Iam, there are solicitors practising in family law who are in big firms that deal with the big ticket cases, such as I would have referred a client to, and there are those who take whatever comes through the door however unpleasant it may be. Those who would perhaps be paid less than your plumber. A barrister who decides to specialise in family law is bound by the cab rank principle to take the case allocated to them. It’s their choice as to what they decide to specialise in. Of course I would not look down on a judge - a barrister or solicitor becomes a judge only on merit. I respect anyone who achieves that.

I’m familiar with the family courts and those who work in them.

A law degree may be neither "here nor there" in your opinion but I am presuming you had to take one at some point in time in order to get to the Bar or were you just in the post room sorting out the mail!

Some here either don’t know or don’t care how many posters have been driven from this forum the last year and half , decent posters who had much to share and discuss without
using sarcasm or mocking .

I don't know anything about the law as a profession; don't even know the difference between a solicitor and a barrister ( please, nobody explain, its completely irrelevant to this post ) But I do like to think that I'd never look down on anybody for their choice of career.

So I find myself wondering, who contributes more to society, who is more admirable? Someone who undertakes to try to get justice for anybody who needs it, irrespective of their background or “class”, or somebody who does private client work for high net worth clients? Let me think about that….no, don’t bother, I’ve thought.

(Sarcasm alert) Don’t know about the rest of you Grans, but I have much more respect for private medics who only take on trivial procedures for very well off people. These doctors in A&E who just treat any old layabout who turns up at their door, I just look down on them, don’t you? Don’t they know that life’s all about the money? How silly of them….

It’s you who is rude lavendermine and you clearly have no idea of the difference between a solicitor and a barrister. Yes as a partner in a law firm I took my turn at supervising the opening of post, a standard insurance requirement. You display a singular lack of familiarity with actual legal practice so I suspect you didn’t do much with that law degree.

What you don’t know about Alegrias, and I’m not about to tell you, is how much pro bono work I and colleagues did, helping people with tenancy problems and other matters within our respective fields albeit that our paying clients were big companies and wealthy individuals. Not something the legal profession makes a big song and dance about but without the likes of us who don’t do criminal work inner city law centres would quickly cease to exist.
