anyone tried the new online Wordle word game?

There’s a piece about it in today’s Times - Brit users irate because ‘favour’ was not accepted as a word.
Apparently only American spellings are accepted, so it’ll be the same for e.g. colour/color.

But perhaps, even more delighting than the game itself, is the origin story.

The short version is that British-raised New York resident Josh Wardle, who used to work at Reddit and is now a software engineer at Brooklyn art collective Mschf, originally built Wordle last year for his partner, a word puzzle enthusiast, for them to play together.

Hosting it on a website he’s had for years as a home for his other creative efforts (powerlanguage.co.uk, back from his time in England), Wardle casually shared the game with family. Then he showed it to a few well-placed friends. But virality, as we know, doesn’t take much to get rolling when the stars are aligned. It was in the blink of an eye that all hell broke loose.

No, no notes, TillyTrotter, I’m not that organised. I don’t think the website stores previous efforts, but I have seen a list online of all previous solutions.

Someone tweeted that Wordle is just like Word Mastermind. My DGSs like playing our original Mastermind, but I’d not heard of this.

I use the same strategy of using the 15 most commonly used letters in the first three goes, generally ignoring anything that comes up as correct and then aim to get it in my fourth attempt as by then I usually have enough information to work it out or at least have a good guess. Getting the answer in three or less goes would be complete luck.

There is a Welsh version - Gairglo - but it's hard to fit in the double letters so a different experience.

I got it today but it took me 5 goes.

Do you make notes then Maggie or does the website store info from previous days’ efforts?

Got it in 3 today. I start with whatever appeals on the day, but always a word with the most used letters.

I have the first letter and another, I am line three but can’t think.

I don’t, but I start with a word with 2 different vowels.

PurpleDaffodil I did follow it but only the tiles came up so I wasn't sure what to do but managed to fathom it out with help.

However, when I followed the link a couple of minutes ago, the instructions came up too for the first time.

As long as he doesn't start using Welsh words ?

Son flagged it up to me. Loving it. Had a 100% correct record until today when, as other posters pointed out, it was an American spelling today. Would never have got it even if allowed 20 goes - I don’t spell that word like that! So disappointed! Oh well, now I know I suppose I’ll carry on - it is fun.

Yes I was disappointed to see today's word with American spelling, what a pity.

We play it individually and report results on family WhatsApp thread. Apart from American spelling you need to know it’s not a dictionary based game so even “real” words will be rejected. The answer appears at the top of the page if you fail to get it.
I like the fact it is only one a day, not likely to waste too much time. Don’t know if anyone else has mentioned it but do follow the link in the OP. There are several games called Wordly in the App Store which are different.

I was lucky, Calistemon. Well, sort of, if you count looking at line 4 for 10 minutes thinking that there wasn't a word in the dictionary to fit with what I'd got and what I'd eliminated lucky. I risked a look at this thread and saw that Kathy73 had told us that it was an American spelling. Got it straight away then. For me I think it's a bit spoilt now, as we won't automatically come up with American spellings.
