Friends introduced me to my ex...
Soops kitchen, a place of reflection, refuge and at times revelry.
A group of Cambridge academics want any inquiry into recruitment and selection processes.
Very boring for me ( met through work ) but a friend of mine is married to the mechanic who came to fix her car. Not terribly romantic either I know!
Just seems so many people meet their partner online these days it’s nice to remember how it used to be.
Friends introduced me to my ex...
We were both singing in a choir and had a party after a summer concert. The slight complication was that he was engaged and a wedding planned for 4 months ahead. I didn't have a say in it but within a week the wedding had been cancelled and we were married in less than a year. Must have been the right thing to do though - we celebrated 48 years together yesterday!
At my friend's wedding. She was marrying his brother and for the last 38 years we have been sister in laws.
He was a Boy Scout I was a Girl Guide, we met at a joint camp. Went our separate ways then met again in our 20s….
Met my ex husband in the local disco the night before he was flying off to travel Europe for 6 months, however he was back after 4 wks we were married for 16 years.
I was a nurse working in a school, he was a teacher and brought an ill child to see me. That was September, first date in December, engaged the following April, married in the July 43 years ago. All still good!
My husband is the electrician who came to repair my cooker. Thirty five years ago! It was a small problem and he said I needn’t pay if I’d agree to dinner.
Ours was a long distance relationship. Age 21, I placed an advert in a UK single magazine. I was actually looking for a new pen friend, the pen friend I had for many years – he was from Pakistan, told me that he will be getting married soon.
MrB replied to my advert along with 80+ other British/English men. I wrote back to one or two but I kind of lost interest and it was about a year later that I replied to his letter.
After 4 years of writing using the snail mail, him calling me on the phone every Sunday for a chat- must cost him a fortune! , flying over to meet me a couple of times, we decided to stop writing and get married instead.
I met Mr Mishy on a work bus, those were the day when Philips in Cambridge organised buses to collect workers from outlying villages, anyhow the only vacant seat was next to Mr M. got chatting and boom there you go. Lived together for 10 years and married for 31.
DH picked me up on his motorbike in a biker cafe. I was 17, he was 19. Married after 3 years, 56 years ago. They said we were too young!
We were penpals through a music magazine. Met up in Manchester after a short time. Been married 43 years now.
My friend, Christine, and I were disappointed in all men on Christmas 1967 but wanted to go to a local Boxing Day dance. We therefore agreed not to let any man take us (to our own home - they did that in those days) at the end but travel back together, which we did. However, at the dance we were asked to dance by 2 chaps who were friends... The one I was dancing with almost fell asleep dancing in my arms but fitted very nicely. I never expected to see him again but his friend took our telephone numbers. Encouraged by his friend, he phoned the next day, and we arranged to meet that weekend. I saw him standing on the steps of our city centre theatre as arranged, probably trying to remember what I looked like... I ran up and kissed him - very unusual behavior for me -, not minding that he had a drip dangling from his nose because of the freezing cold. We celebrated our Golden Wedding last year...! I wouldn't swap him for the world...unless lookalike Dr Xand Van Tulleken suddenly aged overnight... We were just saying just now how sad we were that his friend died in his 30's and mine has become a recluse though I now live near her sister...
He was the son of our new next door neighbours .I don't think he noticed me at first until his parents invited myself and my parents to a party. He passed away after fifty five years of marriage leaving a massive gap in my life.
I met DH through a dating agency in a local newspaper. One of my friends had tried it and she said it was fun. Well, I met 7 men in total and they were terrible! I had a nickname for each and everyone. My friend used to babysit my son who was 8 years old at the time. Each time I came in and rolled my eyes she used to crack up laughing! If anything I had a night out with a chat. I said to my friend that I was going to stop doing it as it was getting silly. Then the agency sent out the paperwork for 2 more. One of them was definitely a no no but the other looked interesting. We met and he seemed canny but then I got cold feet and called it off. A week later I was out with my friend and I talked it over again with her. Because I had had a terrible past with 2 previous partners (one husband, one partner) I was very wary. I decided to get in touch with him and we will have been married 15 years this April!
In a pub on a very wet Saturday afternoon. I went in to meet my partner and was wearing a Mac, wellies, sou’wester and had a very wet dog on a lead. Another regular introduced us as I arrived and I remember thinking ‘this is a nice guy’. A year or so later when my partner and I split up, I continued to go to the local and was always pleased when he was there. We’ve now been married nearly 19 years and I was right, he is still a nice guy!
As a final year Psychology student, I helped out with the Psychology lectures and practicals for graduates doing teacher training ( think it was called Dip Ed in those days). My husband to be was on the course, not tht he ever became a teacher! .That was in the 60s. Married in 1968, divorced in 1993.
I was in a pub with friends. There happened to be a book on the bar and he asked if it was mine. Then a table became free and everyone grabbed seats, including him and his friend. I ended up sitting next to him. Apparently he told his friend that night he would marry me!
Met my first husband at my grandparents Country Club on a rock n roll evening. I was sixteen, he nineteen. We married two years later, too soon, too young. It lasted twelve years before I escaped. Then a few years playing the field before meeting second husband who was the flatmate if the chap I was seeing at the time. That lasted twenty three years before I decided that marriage wasn’t for me. Now free, single and happy. No regrets though and I have three lovely children from my marriages.
When I was being the world’s worst barmaid in his local (promoted from world’s worst steak sandwich maker!). The landlord’s young niece was staying and she asked me how old I was and then asked Pete. On learning that we were the same age she promptly said we should go out together. He asked me to his 21st and we were married 2 years later. We had just over 40 years, one daughter and two dgs before I lost him to cancer.
I met my ex husband at a speedway track !
I was a supporter and had actually run a fan club for an Australian rider the year before. Greg didn't return for a second year due to injury and another Aussie joined the team.
Friends told me that this new rider knew Greg so could be an idea to have a chat with him as I hadn't heard from Greg (he had returned to Oz) for a few months.
We were introduced by these friends and even though to look at, he wasn't my type, (I went for dark hair and eyes and he was a green eyed redhead !) we got to know each other as friends and it took him 4 months to ask me on a date , which was to a big speedway meeting in London, along with his sister, her boyfriend and 2 other friends , so not exactly romantic !
Took him 2 weeks to even kiss me a I found out he was actually already seeing someone else and he wanted to find out which of us he prefered!
We started dating in August 1980 , got married in September 1981 - including 3 months when he had returned to Australia .
Looking back I wonder if it was marry in haste etc !
He did the same thing with the woman that he left me for - told her that we were separated while I had gone to visit some friends and I don't think he's had a long term relationship for more than 5 years !
In a pub and we were both fairly hammered, so the story was carefully edited for parental consumption.
We skipped the part about falling into the nearest bed pronto too.
We met at a birthday party - his friend brought him along for moral support as my flatmate had just split up with said friend. I had just returned to the party having gone home to change - we were next door in student houses and my friend made a disparaging comment about what I was wearing - and he said he liked my rear view!!!! The rest is history and we celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary last year!
DD met her husband at school and they married on their 10th anniversary of their first date, celebrating 10th wedding anniversary this year
When I was 15 I met my first Mr B on the street, literally. My school friend ,who had moved away, was walking me back to the bus station for me to return home after a visit, when we bumped into a crowd of guys. One of whom was her cousin. He fancied me and asked her to invite me back forNew Year. She did, I went and the rest was history.
But divorce followed and after a few years I met the love of my life at a singles club. Sadly that was not to last and I dated a few other men who I met through online dating. One of those I married. We actually ‘ met’ under the clock in the railway station in Glasgow.
It was the last night of term and the uni bar had reduced beer to 1p a pint. I didn't drink pints but there were lots of friends having a good time. I saw this very tall good looking man, he kept looking at me. We walked home together, and then split up for Christmas. I went back early and gave a lunch party for 'everyone' already back... I asked everybody if they'd seen him, (luckily he stood head and shoulders above everyone else so he was easily described!) You can guess, the only guest I wanted to see...
We got engaged the next night, and were married six months later. It's our gold wedding coming up!
bridie5, under the clock at Central was where I used to meet my DH after work.
He was so shy and as the boss, didn't want his staff to know he was dating. It went pear shaped, when he had arranged to meet me at Boots' Corner to choose my engagement ring in the Arcade. They followed him, suspecting something was up and the secret was out!!!
