I'm wondering now what happened to my mums eternity ring.
I always found it moving, looking at the rings all worn thin from wear, years after my dad had died.

My mother told me they were invented to make more profits for jewellers.

After the birth of our son my husband bought me a beautiful sapphire and diamond eternity ring. It was quite unusual as the stones were square. Unfortunately one of the sapphires fell out, but we luckily found it and instead of taking the ring to the jewellers to be mended, dear husband decided to do it himself.
Once fixed in place, husband handed ring to me saying 'that'll not fall out again' referring to the sapphire. How very true!
Unfortunately the glob of glue holding the sapphire in place was not transparent, the light couldn't shine through it, and it was very visible at the back of the ring which was never worn again. Still have it and wear now and again around the house- was bought a beautiful diamonds only one many years later-of which I'm very careful to ensure that it, glue and husband together are never in close proximity!

I had 2 wedding rings due to having to have the first cut off at the hospital because of an allergy to a bee sting. I also had a diamond and sapphire eternity ring and husband had no idea but I treated myself many years ago to an beautiful emerald behind his back and had it set in my eternity ring. I decided a about 10 years ago to get rid of all the jewellery I had (when the price of gold went high) as I didn’t often wear it and with the bit of money I got from that I had my wedding rings and eternity ring plus the extra little diamonds and the emerald melted down and made into just one band incorporating all the gems. I helped design the ring and was thrilled with my one wide band that is now my wedding and eternity rings co

Smashing idea, clever you! Love this amalgamation of assets!

I notice quite a few people whose rings no longer fit. I have the same problem and have been wearing the three rings on my middle finger. Does anyone else do this?

Never! Always have rings 'sized' as my fingers chubbed-up!! Dangerous to wear Ill fitting rings , you'll lose them-or your fingers!!

Whitewavemark2 Fri 04-Feb-22 14:15:21

Yes a present on the birth if our first child.

It is Cornish gold and emeralds to match engagement ring.

Personally I don’t. I think they look silly on men. But my wife does.

Mummer Fri 04-Feb-22 14:13:30

#mealso. The only piece of bling I retained after ditching useless lump is my eternity ring I had to con him into getting me after #2 DS born! He'd just spent equivalent of £1800 on watch for himself and I asked to see rings whilst still in Preston's of Bolton! He was too worried about seeming mean or broke and tarnish his carefully crafted false veneer of wealth and money no object to refuse, I chose well and still wear it, it's mine and son's not his!

I chose to have one instead of a new wedding ring when my first became too tight to wear. I wear it all the time.

Bluedaisy Fri 04-Feb-22 13:28:41

Combined.

I was hoping to be given one during the early years of our marriage. Then my ever practical DH told me that eternity rings were something that the diamond industry invented as a way for them to use up the ‘off cuts’ of larger diamonds That took away the romance of them for me. So no I haven’t got one?

Auntieflo Fri 04-Feb-22 13:27:19

Yes, I wear my mum's. Dad gave it to her on their 40th wedding anniversary, so it has tiny ruby chips. Probably not worth much, but precious to me, as I have so little of her. Hope to pass it on to my daughter, if it survives ?

My husband bought me a diamond and sapphire eternity ring when we had been married 25 years.

It's lovely, and only worn when we go out.

homefarm Fri 04-Feb-22 13:21:16

Never been given an eternity ring or engagement one, but then I bought the wedding rings so what can I expect.

It shouldn't be any problem for a good jewellery to repair your rings. My wedding and engagement rings have both been cut off twice as they became dangerously tight. After resizing and repair you would never know it had been done. One jeweller did say that if the ring has been cut through the hallmarks it devalues it slightly, but that didn't really matter to me.

Lookout01 Fri 04-Feb-22 13:17:10

Yes I do, my husband gave me a diamond eternity band after the birth of our third child. I also wear my wedding band and engagement ring, all so precious

AreWeThereYet Fri 04-Feb-22 13:12:37

No.

I understood them to traditionally be given on the birth of a son (ensuring the 'eternity' of the family

Well that makes more sense than a marriage symbol, given that you already have a wedding ring.

Happysexagenarian Fri 04-Feb-22 13:08:38

No I never had an eternity ring, though I would have loved one. DH would probably say 'We've been together for an eternity anyway, why do you need another ring?' I suppose it's a bit pointless now after 40 years of marriage! I wear my wedding ring, engagement ring and a ring that was my mothers. DH gave me a beautiful ring for our Pearl Anniversary but I rarely wear it as it stands very proud of my finger and I worry about catching it on something and losing the pearl. I love pretty jewellery, I make jewellery, but I don't wear much of what I have, unless I'm going somewhere special, which isn't often.

AngBrew Fri 04-Feb-22 13:08:24

i would love to wear my wedding and engagement rings but have osteoarthritis in my fingers and have had my rings made bigger a few times but cannot do that anymore so very upsetting and I don't fancy wearing them around my neck.

travelsafar Fri 04-Feb-22 13:06:22

I have a what i think is a lovely eternity ring, 18ct gold with small diamonds inbeded into the gold all the way round. Its very neat looking and goes well with my engagement ring of three diamonds and my plain band of gold for my wedding ring. Sadly due to arthritis causing swollen joints it no longer goes over my knuckle. I intend leaving it to my dearest sister as she has been such a support to me after the death of DH and shown her eternal love for me.

Growing0ldDisgracefully Fri 04-Feb-22 12:58:06

I understood them to traditionally be given on the birth of a son (ensuring the 'eternity' of the family), though some of the other occasions on here are beautiful reasons for such a ring as well.

My husband gave me a diamond eternity ring to celebrate the birth of our son, our first and only child.

We were too broke to afford an engagement ring, but my husband also gave me a diamond engagement ring after we married, and the entity ring (the later gift) goes well with it.

I don't wear them often, so as to look after them m, but they come out for dressy and special occasions, such as our anniversary, etc, even if we aren't dressing up and going out.

I always wear my wedding ring though.

Nannan2 Fri 04-Feb-22 12:51:30

Yes did before divorced! They're traditionally bought at birth of a (first) child, of the marriage i believe.

Yammy Fri 04-Feb-22 12:49:15

Yes, I wear a diamond eternity ring given on our 25 wedding anniversary. My engagement ring was stolen and never replaced. I have a Diamond and Ruby ring from my Ruby wedding but only wear it on special occasions, DU's choice not really practical for everyday.
