‘From A Pet And Smoke Free Home’.

The times I see this on the ‘For Sale’ page of our local Community Facebook page.

Can well understand the smoke free part, but it seems when it comes to selling goods, not having had a dog or cat around the house is a definite plus.

As a non-pet owner myself, can see the attraction, but for all the animal lovers out there?

Is it just everybody else’s pets that are not so acceptable?

It depends what they're selling I guess. Something covered in dog hair wouldn't be wanted by anyone, dog owner or not.

But I've never bought anything from anyone's house and I'm not likely to either.

Some people have serious allergies to animal dander and fur which cleaning and hoovering don't totally get rid of.

Yep, this. You see the same thing on clothing and household items for sale on Ebay.

I bought a jigsaw from a charity shop recently. When I opened the box at home the pieces were mixed up with cat or dog hairs. Revolting, it went straight in the bin.

I was going to say, my best guess is it's an allergy issue.

Some people are extremely allergic to animals and may not be able to tolerate living in a home where an animal was present - especially if there's carpeting in the home.

And what about smells ? Wet dog and cat pee come to mind.

Coastpath Fri 11-Feb-22 10:03:11

I think they are just trying to convey that the item is clean, smells nice and is ok for people with allergies.

Some people don't like animals and are very fussy about their fur.

I think it's fair enough to mention it. Dogs and cats are wonderful but they do have a bit of an aroma which not everyone likes. And then there's the hair, fur etc.

This thread reminds me of when I was pregnant with my first child 42 years ago. My friend’s mother presented me with some lovely hand knitted garments. When I unwrapped them the smell of stale cigarette smoke was awful. I washed them all and could still smell it faintly and it took a second wash to make them fresh. There were 3 smokers in the house and they were oblivious to the smell.

Clever cat or dog.
Mine has not progressed beyond squeaky toys hmm

ha ha MayBeMaw! I've just bought a jacket from ebay and the cigarette smell is disgusting - and it had white cat hairs on it. So disappointing but the seller had described it as needing 'freshening up'. Burning, more like!

Our daughter has a severe allergy to cat and dog fur. Her eyes become swollen and sore and she has trouble breathing so this would be a plus for her.

TillyTrotter Fri 11-Feb-22 11:20:39

And she doesn’t smell! But she does drop hair which has to be vacuumed up each day.

Smileless2012 Fri 11-Feb-22 11:27:49

When we were selling our house, the estate agent did accompanied viewings and always told us to take our dogs out for a walk and put our cat in his carrier and leave him in the car.

One viewing took place when it was chucking it down with rain so we took ourselves and our dogs round to a friends.

I always think of those that may be allergic to pet hair.
Then there are others that expect that whatever they buy secondhand , the same as if it has just come out of the packaging!
I have bought things off ebay that look great in the photo posted but must have been kicked around and stamped on before they were posted by the seller !

I have a very sensitive nose and know immediately if there is a pet in a house - from pet food, litter trays, pet beds or on carpets and chairs! It does not prevent me from visiting people but as I’m also very allergic to cats, I always carry eye drops and antihistamine with me.

I wouldn’t let it put me off buying a house from a pet owner ( as long as it was not really noticeable) as the first thing I do when moving house is have all the carpets cleaned professionally.

I have more of a problem when booking holiday accommodation, I try to avoid places which say they welcome pets.

I was selling some vintage glass ornaments on Ebay, someone messaged to ask if they were from a smoke and pet-free home, I understand soft furnishings or clothes but glass!.

My sister, who has 2 small dogs, gave me a vacuum cleaner that she had used for 6 months but didn’t like. I used it once and my whole house smelt of dog. I don't want to tell her so now have to store the vacuum.

FannyCornforth Fri 11-Feb-22 12:12:52

Tilly I had a cat (Stanley) who absolutely loved to be actually hoovered himself! Honestly!
(With the upholstery attachment.)

Coastpath Fri 11-Feb-22 12:18:45

Elizabeth27 That's a very good point about the vacuum that smells of dog.

I have a dog and this is a continual problem for me. It's a Henry vacuum, I change the bag, wash all the parts but there is still a smell of dog. Does anyone have any tips for stopping this happening or curing it when it does?

I agree with those who say it is a concern about allergies.
