I am looking for some warm comfortable big knickers. No stretch, no lace and soft to the touch. That made me think of Pollards. I loved that store.

So many bargains in the big drums and the array of items in the drawers behinds the counter staff was huge.

We had a wonderful shop very similar to Pollards, but now that too has gone.

British Home Stores, C&A's and Woolworths. I used to love those stores for a good browse.

John Lewis - local branch now closed.

Woolies - everyday bits and pieces under one roof.

BHS - an alternative to M and S.
Also miss their great lighting department.

Richards Shops - mid-range in design and pricing.

If xyears younger, Biba and
Bus Stop.

BHS I really miss them, for coats , summer clothes and underwear .
Miss Debenhams for the cafe and wedding outfits xx

I really miss BHS most as I bought their tights for years. I buy "Large" though my measurements are Medium and the BHS ones were very stretchy.

I loved BHS for strapping summer holiday dresses and also for their lighting department. Very sparkly!

Lewis's in Argyle St not JOHN Lewis an independent department store and Goldbergs in Candleriggs ,both Glasgow both shops wher you could buy everything you wanted under one roof .Both I remember from childhood when we went to see Santa in them they had the most incredible christmas lights displays.Later on I worked WITH Santa taking photographs.

I think you can get Bon Marche online. Also our local "Retail Outlet" at Lakeside near Doncaster still has a Bon Marche! I got some lovely pyjamas and a bodywarmer there just before Christmas! wink

British Home Stores. Liked their household and lighting departments.

Nannylovesshopping Thu 17-Feb-22 16:34:10

seacliff remember all those you mentioned, as live in Colchester, used to love Keddies too with the outside escalator, Jacks was a little treasure trove, brilliant for all garden sundries, cheap as chips!

GreyKnitter Thu 17-Feb-22 16:19:49

Monsoon and Accessorize are still open near us - or were a few weeks ago.

Grandmahigham Thu 17-Feb-22 16:11:28

So many, but East ,Debenhams and always look for C&A when travelling in Europe.

I miss BHS for women's wear and lighting, also upstairs there was a good canteen.

seacliff Thu 17-Feb-22 15:51:16

I really miss C & A.

Also Keddies in Colchester, Spoils a well priced kitchen shop, and Jacks a "sell anything" type hardware shop, loads hung up outside the shop. Also Fishers I think, great for any type of scissors, knives etc.

I loved Jacklins, a traditional sweets/coffee/cigars shop, with wonderful aroma of fresh ground coffee beans. Upstairs was an old fashioned tearooms.

Magrithea Thu 17-Feb-22 15:41:43

C&A are still trading in Germany - went into the Berlin branch a few years ago and it was like stepping back in time!!

Granmarderby10 Thu 17-Feb-22 15:39:01

Ranbys was a department store long before it was taken over by Debenhams sometime late 70s I think.

They’ve just demolished the old Debenhams building and banged up something that at the moment doesn’t look that much better but hey-ho ?

Yogamum Thu 17-Feb-22 15:33:45

Laura ashley home
Woolworths

Though thankfully have found a number of shops are carrying laura ashley lighting as I am specifically looking for additional lighting to match what I purchased in the past. Would love if someone started carrying the rugs and bedding too.

Alders it was. And I agree there is a dearth of shoe shops. Not a lot of choice now

pat9 Thu 17-Feb-22 15:22:14

SparklyGrandma, Jones Brothers were part of John Lewis. I used that when I lived in Holloway (not the prison)

pat9 Thu 17-Feb-22 15:13:22

Heals. Such lovely furniture. I used to just walk around and admire the beautiful furniture that I could not afford.
BHS too.
And another that I can't remember the name of .It had branches in Bromley and Croydon

Granartisan Thu 17-Feb-22 15:01:11

I too am a Derby girl. Born here nearly 82 years ago! I missed Ranbys. It was bought out by Debenhams and now that has gone too! What about Thurman and Malins, Barlow and Taylors and Jeffersons to mention just a few!

rowyn Thu 17-Feb-22 14:38:54

And missing White Stuff which closed down in Marlow. I know there are other branches not that far away but it was the most convenient, with great customer service and a very welcoming and helpful staff.

Liz62 Thu 17-Feb-22 14:38:30

Woolworths used to be able to get so much in there .

Greciangirl Thu 17-Feb-22 14:32:30

C&A.
Debenhams.
Woolworths.
British home stores.
Peter Robinson. (60’s store).
Dorothy Perkins.

I particularly miss old fashioned iron mongers shops.

Monsoon are still trading here in the East.

rowyn Thu 17-Feb-22 14:26:10
