What store do you wish was still here.?

i loved virgo, it was in the shopping centre that i got my first job(co-op) i would go every saturday and buy a new skirt or top, everything was 99p, i miss what everys, woolworths and littlewoods, i would get a tut tut from my manger when i bought something from the other stores while i was working in etams, never liked there clothes...lol.

Kitty Hunter’s is still there, and yes, the joke shop is Alf James.
One of DH’s favourite gags is to say when you’ve had a haircut,
‘Where did you get your hair done? Alf James?’

SachaMac that’s brilliant that your mum and aunty were gilders at RCD. What a fabulous job, I bet that it was a lovely place to work.
Do you have lots of Crown Derby?

Alf James was still there about ten years ago, but I doubt if it still is.
I used to get dressing up stuff for work (school) from there.

Huckleberry Willow moved to The Spot, near to The Neptune. I don’t remember it when it was at Duckworth Square. And you are right, DS was an awful dump.
Derby City Centre is fortunatly having lots of regeneration and money spent on it, and rightly so.

fanny, we bought an Ercol sofa from Hunters a couple of years ago!

Oh yes Fanny we all had lots of CD at one time, when we had a declutter a few years ago a lot went off to Bamford's. I still have some beautiful bird paperweights, funnily enough including a lovely owl. My mum still has some pieces that she painted. They both loved working there, my aunt was there all her working life.

I remember going in the Kardomah Kitty my mum would take us in there for a milk shake and a toasted Teacakes when we’d been shopping in the Market Hall (another place I miss). When were older she would take us for fish & chips in the restaurant at the top of Littlewoods (now Primark) it was always terribly noisy in there though.

I used to like C and A , somehow H and M are not quite the same. They didn’t have them here but I remember them from growing up in London. Cheap and cheerful.

I’m the only one on gransnet who will know it, but Army & Navy in Victoria ( London ) used to love it in there.

And of course good old Woolworths.

C & A didn't have a restaurant or a cafe did they? Not even in the Oxford Street store. I think these days this is a must for any big store, as people simply can't shop without having a coffee or a meal. Woolies had a great self serve.

I’ve just thought of a shop that has quite recently gone - Past Times.
I used to buy all my work friends presents from there

And Gamages for toys, although I found it boyish ... trains and planes etc. I think it was in Holborn.

Kitty and Sachamac DH (a real Derbian) remembers The Kardomah (what an odd name) but can’t remember where it was.

The Kardomah in Derby was on the junction of Cornmarket and St James Street. I am sure there used to be Kardomahs in many towns.

Brown Muffs in Bradford. Even if a slick saleswoman did persuade me into buying a tiny blusher that cost more than my week’s rent back in 1974. It was good stuff though.

Does anyone know Ludlow? Is that stove and furniture shop by the castle still open? I used to love warming up in there and the smell of the place was divine

Fanny yes MrsQuigley is spot on, the Kardomah was on the Cornmarket, I think it was quite the place to go for coffee/lunch in Derby at one time.

I had Saturday jobs, first in C&A in Marble Arch and then went up market to Bourne and Holllingworth. I only had to work until Ipm as we closed Sat afternoon! I lived in the Suburbs and travelled on the Northern line ‘up West’ ( the West end of London). Our local Store was Priors of Finchley, not quite the same ring as Harrods of Knightsbridge! Priors had tge wires on the ceiling where your monet shot back and forth.

Woolworths and C&A were always my favourites.

Tchibo! When I look around the house and in our wardrobes, it's the Tchibo items which are so useful, still going strong and are ones we wish we could buy again.

I would love it to come back

British home stores is really missed. Also Borders, I could spend hours in there quite happily.
