I am looking for some warm comfortable big knickers. No stretch, no lace and soft to the touch. That made me think of Pollards. I loved that store.

So many bargains in the big drums and the array of items in the drawers behinds the counter staff was huge.

We had a wonderful shop very similar to Pollards, but now that too has gone.

If we are talking about southend, then Keddies was a lovely shop.

Janetashbolt Thu 17-Feb-22 11:19:42

Can't remember the name, a department store in Southend High Street, had a system where money was put in a capsule and whizzed on a system of pulleys across the ceiling. Fascinating. Must have been late 50s. Also miss C&A and Woolies

C & A, Woolworths, Monsoon and BHS for me

Alioop Thu 17-Feb-22 11:14:07

Like many others, Woolworths and C&A.

C&A. When my children were small I had a store card for c&A. We paid a set amount every month. Once or twice a year I could splurge on clothes for the whole family.

Mothercare not Motherwell

sazz1 Thu 17-Feb-22 11:11:08

Woolworths, C&A, Motherwell
All very good for presents and clothes

jaylucy Thu 17-Feb-22 11:06:17

BHS
Woolworths
Debenhams

In fact most womenswear shops that have closed down !
The choice in my town is Primark, Yours, New Look, Bon Marche, Next and Peacocks. Trying to find something as basic as a black blouse or jumper or T shirt for work proved impossible the other day.

Another vote for BHS. plus Borders, which I loved browsing around in, but I purchased very little there, one of the reasons it wentout of business I suppose, great for browsing not so good for buying when you compared the costs to the dreaded Amazon. Plus I really miss the lovely John Lewis we had in Watford.

Von19 Thu 17-Feb-22 11:02:28

Richards and BHS

Kate1949 Thu 17-Feb-22 11:01:06

I used to like Dolcis and Sacha for shoes in my pre bunion days.

Casdon Thu 17-Feb-22 10:58:49

JaneJudge you mean the Clearview stoves showroom in Ludlow I think? I bought mine based on the discussion I had there, the staff are incredibly knowledgeable and the house is beautiful. It is still open. Ludlow is a lovely place altogether.

FannyCornforth I loved Huckleberry Willow's and only the other week got rid of some spice tins from there. Used to love to go in to see what was new.

There you go Fanny. My mum and dad met in the Kardomah.

I was born in Derby at the Nightingale MH. And, DS2's father in law died there.

I really miss Dickens & Jones and whilst now I only have vague memories I do remember going in my early 20's to all the great London department stores - Marshall & Snelgrove, Debenham & Freebody, Swan & Edgar, Bourne & Hollingsworth.

I also miss Bodgers (discount department store in Ilford) and the most recent UK closure Hema the Dutch homewares company

C&A - they've currently got some lovely Miffy baby clothes that I'd like to buy for my soon to arrive 1st grandchild. They seem to have stores in most of Europe but here. Going to have to wait until I can get to Spain in the summer and drag other half shopping when we're in port.

grannygranby Thu 17-Feb-22 10:49:35

Bibas the shops and the department store
