If your collections are on friday or Saturday an appeal to put your bins out as late as possible and bring the bins as soon after collection.
Its awful to those low flying bins on the roads when your driving around the areas.
Winds are forecast to be approx 100mph in some parts of the country.Keep safe every one.

My collection is today but it was incredibly windy last night so I’ve nipped out this morning to put mine out now it’s calmed down. I noticed my neighbours have done the same.

yggdrasil Thu 17-Feb-22 08:07:45

Here that want you to put it out before 7am, but they don't actually turn up till the afternoon, So I don't hurry. But they may change on 1st march

We live on a fairly new estate, one of the bylaws is you don’t leave your bins on the front of your property, after emptying. When I first moved in we all took our bins into the back. Well new recent residents have been lazy and not done that, you can imagine what is flying around our cul de sac, at least mine was just , along with the bins, strewn around the garden?

Liz46 Thu 17-Feb-22 08:48:03

OH moved our bins into the garage last night after trying to sort out our neighbour's bins (the neighbour is just out of hospital).

My daughter is a very nervous flyer (after an accident) and is flying to Egypt tomorrow!

I never understood why anyone thought open recycling boxes were a good idea. We have bins with lids now but back in the day those ridiculous boxes had things flying around in the wind. Dopey idea.

JaneJudge Thu 17-Feb-22 09:20:55

ours were all blown over yesterday after collection, so goodness knows what it will be like tomorrow

Shinamae Thu 17-Feb-22 09:25:55

We have open recycling bins but I did not put them out last night I’ve put them out this morning but weighted the cardboard brown bag down with the food caddy

Maggiemaybe Thu 17-Feb-22 09:27:20

Our recycling’s due to be collected today but we’ll be lucky if the crew turn up. They’re short-staffed and once missed for 3 weeks running. Everyone’s nipped out with it early this morning and it’s all out on the street now in its various lightweight bags and open boxes for glass, so we’ll end up with loads of it flying round the streets.

And of course, even if it is collected, lots of people are out already and can’t take the empty bins in till they get home. We do our bit by at least tucking them back into the front yards, but it will be a problem if the winds keep up.

I agree, Chestnut. Our DDs in the next council area have one big lidded bin for mixed recycling. We have an open box for glass, a lightweight food waste bin and separate bags for plastics, tins and textiles.

Some people leave for work before their bins are emptied - how can they comply with this bylaw?

On my (busy) street - many people are out the door a couple of hours before the bin men arrive, leaving their bins neatly stacked against their house wall so as not to impede anyone walking past. The bin men arrive, empty the bin and then sling / shove it in the general direction of the property - often leaving it slap bang in the middle of the pavement so that anyone with a wheelchair or pram has to either push it out the way or step into the road.

Every week, when I bring mine in (immediately) I traverse the street pushing other people's bins up against the wall so pedestrians can get past them... it's a very long street so I can't manage the whole lot. These are terraced houses so the bins cannot be pushed into their gardens.

It's a constant niggle with me - why can't the bin men be given enough time to do the job properly? If you're at work, you cannot bring your bin in immediately.

I quite agree with you Dickens and also they very often drop stuff from the recycling boxes and never bother to pick it up…

We don't even have bins or boxes for plastics or paper, we have green thick plastic bags! Glass and tins in an open-top box. General waste in blue plastic waste sacks!!!. The bin men are very good and knot two blue bags together so they don't blow away. They collect very early in the morning and I actually feel sorry for them the bottle box is often full of rainwater.
Our green bins for garden waste should have gone out for early collection this morning but no one seems to have put them out

Kate1949 Thu 17-Feb-22 09:54:39

We have wheelie bins for everything which is great. We put them out late the night before collection. I only wish our Council were as efficient with the bins at our local shopping area. I am fed up of contacting them about the mess. They can't use the excuse of lack of staff due to Covid. It was the same pre pandemic.

Jane43 Thu 17-Feb-22 10:17:32

Our collection is today and this week it is recycling. The recycling bin is only a third full so we decided not to put it out last night. Depending on how windy it is we will put it and the paper and cardboard container out later as they usually arrive to collect around midday. The food caddy collection is every week and they collect very early in the morning so we put it out last night but it blew into the road so we brought it in and took our chances about catching the collection in time. We have been in this house for eight years and the refuse has always been collected without fail, our council has won awards for efficiency and green initiatives and the council tax won’t be increased this year or next. We live on the edge of the park and volunteers collect refuse every week. All things considered we are very fortunate in where we live.

I also used to work, full time, I managed to take my bins in . No one says straight away, just that they shouldn’t be left on the street all the time.

Teacheranne Thu 17-Feb-22 10:30:54

Listening to the wind last night, I decided not to put my bins out - no way was I going to get up at 7 am to catch the bin men in the morning! I have to go to the tip anyway this week as I have a number of large cardboard boxes, a dead printer and some broken garden chairs to get rid of so I can take any recycling items at the same time.

I forgot to put out my general rubbish bin last week so I will have to take some bags out of it when I go to the tip as I cannot cram any more in it! Could be a smelly car journey!

Rosie51 Thu 17-Feb-22 10:34:22

I'm lucky and get 3 wheelie bin collections on the same day every week. Food and garden waste in one bin, mixed dry recycling in another and a third bin for landfill. I don't have a bin for landfill as I rarely have more than a carrier bag of landfill rubbish. Bins have to go out the previous evening because they can be collected any time from 6am onwards, yesterday the landfill rubbish wasn't collected until gone 6pm. While it is lovely to get such efficient collection of 3 bins, it does mean the pavement can sometimes be like an obstacle course once the bins are emptied! Some crews are so tidy with their return of the bin you can't be sure it's been emptied, others seem to leave them scattered haphazardly. No complaints though, we've barely missed a collection since the first lockdown, they work hard to keep to the schedule.

My point was about leaving the house before the bin men arrived rather than whether one worked part-time or full-time.

In my street, people complain because bins are not taken in immediately - either not realising that the owner might be at work, or not interested in the reality. And the reason they complain is because it is a very narrow pavement with cars (legally) allowed to park partly on it - so any bin carelessly shoved back by the bin men is a hazard.

JackyB Thu 17-Feb-22 11:56:26

This week our collection was paper in a wheelie bin and recycling (plastic, tins etc) in yellow plastic sacks. They collected the paper first. In the meantime, the yellow sacks were blown all over the road. We couldn't even find ours.

DH says the roof has blown off the woodshed. It's pretty rough at the moment here in Southern Germany.

annodomini Thu 17-Feb-22 12:45:37

Our recycling is collected very early on Friday morning and the garden/food bin somewhat later the same day. As I live in an end terrace, the two households on my right, have to bring their bins round the back of my house and park them in front. We always leave them neatly lined up behind a low wall and tonight I think the house will shelter them from the SW wind.

Daisend1 Thu 17-Feb-22 13:06:09

I always put my refuse /recycling out the night before the collection date .My collection time is unpredictable (joys of living in the the countrysidegrin) so this ensures it will be collected whatever time it takes place.

infoman Thu 17-Feb-22 18:10:57

Hearing reports that some local authoritys are cancelling their recycling and bin collections on Friday.Could I suggest using the supermarkets to dispose of your recycling items when the winds die down.

People who do not tether trampolines should be prosecuted if any damage caused. They are lethat weapons in such weather- flying and landing on MWays, etc!

Oopsadaisy1 Thu 17-Feb-22 18:28:45

We put our wheelie bins out the night before as the men often turn up at 7am, when we are usually (still asleep) busy.
But as we don’t have pavements or footpaths we often have the bins freewheeling down the lane and then tipping over into the ditch.
MrOops isn’t too keen on fishing ours out of there. But at least they have lids so stuff doesn’t blow out in the wind.
