If Christmas starts in November when can you eat a hot cross bun?

I've just bought my first Hot cross buns this year. My grandmother always insisted they shouldn't be eaten until Easter Sunday. My mother was the same when I was little but she softened as she got older. But it just occurred to me that if things keep going on as they are we will be eating hot cross buns and easter eggs just after Christmas. Not that I think that's bad- but when is the earliest you would have one?

Just eaten my first this morning; lightly toasted with butter ?. M&S are my favourites, always buy from there. I do think however that shops stock things far too early - by the time Christmas arrives I'm sick of seeing mince pies

That sounds delicious !
Anyone else like a cheese and jam combination ?

Has anyone else seen the new Cadbury chocolate bars on sale now? One has tiny mini eggs in each square wrapped in a very bright yellow Easter looking wrapper. The other is labelled as hot cross bun flavoured chocolate. When i picked it up to read ingredients it contains, cinnamon and rasins which i suppose is the link to hot cross buns. smile

Straight after breakfast.

Anyone remember mothering buns? When I was a child I loved them......buns with icing and hundreds and thousands on top ?. Nowhere to be seen for years !

Tesco seem to sell them throughout the year. I buy a four pack of their de luxe version about once a month. Delicious.

What, exactly, is the difference between a hot cross bun and a tea cake? Apart from the cross piped on it and the packaging?

My mother used to make then on Good Friday morning, I still do most years, from the recipe she used..

I'm not very keen on anticipating 'festival food', it takes away the 'specialness' of it and makes what was an eagerly anticipated treat into a commonplace, But that's just my opinion and I really don't expect anyone to share it.

The teacakes I like (Warburton’s) are rather lighter, less dense, and not so sweet.
I did once buy some fancier ones, by that gourmet chef whose name I can’t recall at the moment, but they might as well have been hot cross buns, which I do like, but I wanted teacakes.

As they are readily available all year round in most supermarkets... i would say eat enjoy whenever it takes your fancy !! our grandchildren adore them on visits to our house..

I like the sence of occasion! Turkey at Christmas, lamb and buns (not together ?) at Easter, strawberry in June! And that’s me

My neighbour invited me in for a cup of tea (Earl Grey) on Friday afternoon and gave me a toasted hot cross bun with butter on... delicious!

I buy them as soon as they are in the shops. I prefer the plain ones and I am having them for breakfast with lashings of butter

Hot Cross Buns were definitely a treat for Good Friday and the Easter weekend. But at no other time.

I had one this morning, eat them when you want they are on sale

Brismum Sun 20-Feb-22 11:38:45

Used not to eat them until Good Friday but now they are available from the beginning of January. I love them (especially Sainsbury’s) so I eat them when they are available. Tea cakes are not the same and I don’t eat them. Other members of the family can’t tell the difference!

As a child when food was seasonal we always looked forward to each item as it became available. With everything being available all the time now there is no surprise or real enjoyment any more.
I had a grandmother who lived in South Africa a lot and I never forget the pure joy of the huge box of bunches of large black grapes all swaddled in scrunched white tissue paper that arrived once. It was like a box of magic. Out is season fruit was also available in one shop in the centre of town where my mother sometimes bought red peppers and avocados. They were treats.

Any time .......

I love Hot Cross Buns eaten fresh without butter. I haven't had any yet but now I will be on the lookout for them.

Dylant1234 Sun 20-Feb-22 11:54:55

It was only on Good Friday in my day - that dates me! I also remember when everything fell absolutely silent from Good Friday noon. No traffic, no shops, no cinemas or theatres, no parties, no restaurants. It was eerie but also rather wonderful. The start of lockdown brought back those memories…….

I eat them all year round. Why should something so yummy only be eaten at a certain time of the year?

lincolnimp Sun 20-Feb-22 11:57:03

Never before Good Friday

Graygirl Sun 20-Feb-22 12:01:27

I love a spicy fruit bread, so no contest. Keep lidl fruitloaf in freezer all year , take out a couple of slices when I fancy

Alioop Sun 20-Feb-22 12:02:01

I love any kind of fruit bread all year round. Hot cross buns, fruit spiced loaf, Barmbrack, Irish fruit soda, etc. I have to have them all toasted with butter melted on and a big mug of tea.

Esmay Sun 20-Feb-22 12:08:25

Yummy !
Just enjoy them when you want to !

I don't think that people stick to our food traditions anymore !

The only one ,which my family keep is fish only on a Friday even though the church has relaxed that rule .
If I don't eat fish then I eat vegetarian on the day .
It's a problem with my father ,who is a huge eater of beef ,pork and lamb .
