If Christmas starts in November when can you eat a hot cross bun?

I've just bought my first Hot cross buns this year. My grandmother always insisted they shouldn't be eaten until Easter Sunday. My mother was the same when I was little but she softened as she got older. But it just occurred to me that if things keep going on as they are we will be eating hot cross buns and easter eggs just after Christmas. Not that I think that's bad- but when is the earliest you would have one?

When I was a child we used to queue outside the only baker open on good Friday for his delicious hot cross buns. That was the only day they were sold. My mother bought a dozen and we had some for breakfast each day over the Easter holiday. Now they are sold all year in many flavours I tend to eat them all year. Just wish the supermarkets wouldn’t use the cross all year….keep that for the month of Easter……but I guess that’s a factory production issue.

We like the Rich Fruity ones from M and S best and always buy 2 packs as cheaper that way then freeze one pack.

When I was a child we only ate them over Easter.
I ordered some toasted tea cakes from Waitrose and got a substitute of hot cross buns. You can buy them all year round now.

It’s the same rule for some people with turkey. I know lots of families who eat turkey only at Christmas we eat it all year round it’s healthy protein.

All year round - my husband loves them so I make them all year round. And mince pies too!! I draw the line at Christmas cake and pudding, I make him wait until Christmas for those!

I absolutely adore Hot Cross Buns! We eat them all year round.

Fudgemonkey Sun 20-Feb-22 12:39:49

As soon as they are on sale. They always taste better than fruit buns ?

Kryptonite Sun 20-Feb-22 12:47:40

Good Friday. Or all year round.

grandtanteJE65 Sun 20-Feb-22 12:49:49

I suppose now you can eat them whenever you like, but I would still prefer to wait to Good Friday to eat a hot cross bun, but I always forget to bake them!

You can't buy them here in Denmark, but we have glorious sticky cream buns for the Monday of Shrove week and they have been on sale for ages now, as are Easter eggs.

No-one keeps Lent here, as it is a predominantly Protestant country.

I feel it spoils a holiday, when we can get Christmas things in November and Easter eggs in February. Others feel that January and February are such dreary months that we need cheering up.

Never - vile things

Callistemon21 Sun 20-Feb-22 13:00:22

What you mean is that you don't like them.

Just because you do n't like them doesn't mean they are vile

They used to be eaten on Good Friday and the bakers would open for a couple of hours when all other shops were closed for Good Friday . It is traditional to eat them on Good Friday hence the cross to remind us that Jesus died for us.

On to my second packet of M&S mini ones already. never tried the 'flavoured' ones always go for the old fashioned, plain kind.

GeorgyGirl Sun 20-Feb-22 13:18:00

Yes Good Friday is supposed to be the only day you eat hot cross buns and they're not the same if they have other flavourings.

Well in a few weeks we'll be transforming one of our homemade, undecorated Christmas cakes into an Easter cake with marzipan chicks. It's just been fed another glug of brandy in preparation. Then it will join the Hot Cross buns for tea ?

Whenever you like. I don't think any food is really seasonal any more.
I don't agree with messing with the flavours though.

Of course you can eat anything whenever you like, but I do prefer to keep things seasonal and a bit special. That’s especially so of fruit and veg, would never buy foreign strawberries or Asparagus out of season.

Actually Christmas starts end of August before schools go back. I've seen cards etc in shops on my birthday on 31st August. Boxing Day they start with Easter and then you have everything else - Halloween, Bonfire Night, Valentines. Ridiculous - no wonder the year flies by and children want things when they keep seeing them in the shops so early. The whole meaning of Christmas and Easter has gone and is far too commercialised for me.

When ever they appear in the shops regardless of the time of year. I am partial to a 'warmed in my Aga' smothered in butter spicy hot cross bun any day.

homefarm Sun 20-Feb-22 13:42:03

Yes, should be Good Friday but who cares these days?

Nannan2 Sun 20-Feb-22 13:49:17

Already had some about 3 wks ago- had 3 (not altogether) left 3 for older son- ended up throwing them away??

When I was a child hot cross buns were only eaten on Good Friday. The local bakery would open early for people to come to buy, there was always a queue. These days I might buy and eat them before Easter weekend during Lent but certainly not just after Christmas.

Same. Only on Good Friday. One day only. I remember my Granny would make them from scratch, I got to do the pastry crosses. After Granny died, my mother would just nip down the bakery.

Yes but it's entirely up to you whether you join in. The shops have to make money, but you don't have to buy. Many others will.

Hot cross buns make excellent bread and butter pudding.

With our COVID chaotic Christmas we still have a Christmas pudding left over. Perhaps Easter may be a good time to eat it.

SueDoku Sun 20-Feb-22 14:04:58

I adore hot cross buns, and since M&S teamed up with Ocado I have a pack in every delivery (M&S luxury HCB are the best by far) so I eat them all year round. Do I care? Nope..!! ?

Joesoap Sun 20-Feb-22 14:14:51

As soon as they appear in the shops, I love them, when we were young they were only eaten on Good Friday.
Talking about traditions, who loves the little cream Easter eggs which seem to be around all year, now THEY cant be resisted!
