Flag of Cymru / Wales

Cymru am byth

Anniebach Thu 24-Feb-22 09:08:58

I have our flag on my wheelchair and if residents of the Cul de sac where I live hang flags for the jubilee I shall hang our flag in
the garden.

Did my family tree , every generation all born in Wales, I am a
mix of South, Mid ,North Wales.

How lovely cornergran!

We rarely see one in a garden here in north Wales but I have one in mi Casa in Spain as most homes fly their lovely red and gold flag and I have my little Draig ???????flying alongside the bigger ??.

Mr C was born in the Rhondda. We had a small Welsh flag in the garden until Eunice arrived. We’ll be getting another next time we cross the bridge, it just ‘feels’ right to buy it in Wales.

Anniebach

s land of my fathers is dear to me
Land of poets and singers, and people of stature
Her brave warriors, fine patriots
Shed their blood for freedom

(Chorus)

Land! Land! I am true to my land!
As long as the sea serves as a wall for this pure, dear land
May the language endure for ever.

Old land of the mountains, paradise of the poets,
Every valley, every cliff a beauty guards;
Through love of my country, enchanting voices will be
Her streams and rivers to me.

(Chorus)

Though the enemy have trampled my country underfoot,
The old language of the Welsh knows no retreat,
The spirit is not hindered by the treacherous hand
Nor silenced the sweet harp of my land.

Diolch yn fawr for the translation Anniebach. I can sing the anthem in Welsh but have never seen the translation! Beautiful. ???????

The Welsh National, anthem is wonderful. I used to know all the words as I went to school in Wales for five years.

But I also like the Marseillaise and flower of Scotland. I find the Italian one a bit bonkers…
It’s a shame god save the queen is a bit boring….

It's also odd that England doesn't have its own anthem - when competing against other home nations or, for example, the Six Nations, England teams sing the UK National anthem.

England -v- Wales this Saturday!

I had a look to see how much the Six Bells outdoor paint was - £100 for a one litre tin.
Perhaps we won't paint our garden wall that colour after all.

Beautiful flag and anthem. Bravo Wales!

I am Welsh. Love the flag, love the anthem and love the word "hiraeth". I tried to describle what "hiraeth" meant, the other day, but I failed!

My mother was from Abercynon South Wales ?????????????????????

The origin of the Welsh flag is going to be one of the topics on Portillo's program on Thursday. ?

Urmstongran Wed 23-Feb-22 20:33:07

I think all flags are lovely to see - citizens waving them with pride at events or displaying them in their gardens etc. I just wish the flag for England could inspire such enthusiasm. Why is it that instead of displaying patriotism it has such negativity surrounding it? I remember Emily Thornberry sneering at ‘white van man’ who had a flag of St George’s Cross on his house. Shame really.

paddyann54 Wed 23-Feb-22 19:59:49

There were only two signatories of the Treaty of Union,Scotland and England ,thats why Wales isn't on the Flag,You'll be welcome to take our place when we leave .I suppose though you'd have to sign a treaty rather than be "acquired" or annexed as you were in mediaeval times .

Callistemon21 Wed 23-Feb-22 19:53:42

Casdon

Here it is on the royal standard of Henry 7th, bearing in mind England had annexed Wales in the 13th century.

The Welsh flag is not represented on the Union flag.

I think the Union flag should be redesigned with a small dragon in the middle.

fairfraise Wed 23-Feb-22 19:50:03

That's nice to see Casdon.

Casdon Wed 23-Feb-22 19:25:42

I think Welsh and Gaelic do have the same original roots paddyann54 - but after centuries of evolution I bet they would have a lot of differences!

paddyann54 Wed 23-Feb-22 19:21:51

Thanks CasdonI had a much loved Welsh Auntie who only died a couple of years ago and is sadly missed .She has been in Scotland since 1945 though so was more Scots than welsh and she didn't speak about it much .My knowledge is less than minimal ,she could speak Welsh though and my Irish granny and her could converse even though one was in Gaelic and one Welsh .Or maybe they were pretending to amuse us....

Casdon Wed 23-Feb-22 19:11:14

The current flag was officially adopted in 1959, and is based on an old royal badge used by British kings and queens since Tudor times. The red dragon itself has been associated with Wales for centuries, and as such, the flag is claimed to be the oldest national flag still in use. (From Historic)

paddyann54 Wed 23-Feb-22 19:08:49

Just curious ,if it was only recognised then ,what was the flag before that? I know at school we were taught Wales was a principality and I dont remember any flag at all.I'm sure there must have been one ?

Love that flag, it’s ridiculous because I’ve never lived there but it always feels emotional like I’m home when I drive across the Severn into Wales to visit my sister. My mum was born in the Rhondda Valley little village called Treherbert.

?????????????????????

I have spent many years doing family history, with ancestors from Wales, Dorset, Essex and Yorkshire, and you do feel something when you walk in their shoes. I feel it most strongly in Wales and Dorset.

AGAA4 Wed 23-Feb-22 15:38:36

A neighbour in this little corner of Wales always had the Welsh flag fluttering in his garden. He has gone now and so has the flag.

When my son went to Aberystwyth University, he played for the American football team. One year they got to the final of the college bowl against Loughborough.
Along with many other parents etc. we went along to support.
A young man, clutching an armful of Welsh flags, thrust one into my hands. I pointed out that although I was supporting the Aberystwyth team, I was in fact English, well Anglo Italian to be precise.
He laughed and said it was allowed, as it was a special occasion.
I duly waved the flag a yelled along with the rest, although I didn't really understand what was going on!
My son along with the rest of the non Welsh team members was drilled by their Welsh colleagues to sing the Welsh national anthem in Welsh. It was magnificent!
They lost, but they sounded good.

Michael Portillo is doing a program at 6:30 on BBC2 every night this week, travelling through South Wales. It's fantastic. I've never been to Wales but the bit last night with Paul Robeson and the male voice choir was wonderful. South Wales is now on my bucket list!

I've crossed the Second Severn Crossing many times (sorry, the Prince of Wales Bridge) and never knew that fact volver.

I won't say what it is in case anyone watches it.

Casdon Wed 23-Feb-22 15:06:04

Yes it has JackyB, it’s Y Ddraig Goch (the Red Dragon). It doesn’t trip off the tongue as easily as the saltire!

JackyB Wed 23-Feb-22 15:03:44

I have often wondered if the Welsh flag has a name (like the Scottish Saltire). Or does it just have a name in Welsh?
