Hooray! Let's raise a cheer for the Welsh Dragon.

s land of my fathers is dear to me
Land of poets and singers, and people of stature
Her brave warriors, fine patriots
Shed their blood for freedom

(Chorus)

Land! Land! I am true to my land!
As long as the sea serves as a wall for this pure, dear land
May the language endure for ever.

Old land of the mountains, paradise of the poets,
Every valley, every cliff a beauty guards;
Through love of my country, enchanting voices will be
Her streams and rivers to me.

(Chorus)

Though the enemy have trampled my country underfoot,
The old language of the Welsh knows no retreat,
The spirit is not hindered by the treacherous hand
Nor silenced the sweet harp of my land.

I love that flag but my only Welshness was my great great grandma on my mother’s side who was from Pentrefelin in Denbighshire. When I was at primary school we used to sing a lot of Welsh songs because the singing teacher was Welsh. Lovely, lovely songs they are, too.

You’d have thought they would have done it a week later, on St David’s day Anniebach!

Anniebach Wed 23-Feb-22 12:04:29

True Casdon

Love that flag, it’s ridiculous because I’ve never lived there but it always feels emotional like I’m home when I drive across the Severn into Wales to visit my sister. My mum was born in the Rhondda Valley little village called Treherbert.

?????????????????????

Anniebach Wed 23-Feb-22 12:57:11

tanith it’s called ‘hiraeth’ , Treherbert was your Mum’s home ,
you are drawn to Wales

tanith Wed 23-Feb-22 13:11:04

I think you are right Anniebach I’ve not been for 3 yrs it’s a must for a holiday this year.

And one of the best National Anthems. Last week’s rugby was a treat. The French, Italian and Welsh anthems all in one weekend. I actually think the Italian is the very best!

Anniebach Wed 23-Feb-22 14:03:07

It’s the best National Anthem

BigBertha1 Wed 23-Feb-22 14:26:56

My paternal grandfather was Welsh but died before I was born- do I count as being a bit Welsh? I do enjoy the national anthem when sung at the Rugby - very moving. DH is English through and through so gets cross when Wales wins but not as bad as if its France.

BigBertha1 Wed 23-Feb-22 14:28:14

I have a Welsh maiden name from my grandfather.

Michael Portillo is doing a program at 6:30 on BBC2 every night this week, travelling through South Wales. It's fantastic. I've never been to Wales but the bit last night with Paul Robeson and the male voice choir was wonderful. South Wales is now on my bucket list!

JackyB Wed 23-Feb-22 15:03:44

I have often wondered if the Welsh flag has a name (like the Scottish Saltire). Or does it just have a name in Welsh?

Casdon Wed 23-Feb-22 15:06:04

Yes it has JackyB, it’s Y Ddraig Goch (the Red Dragon). It doesn’t trip off the tongue as easily as the saltire!

I've crossed the Second Severn Crossing many times (sorry, the Prince of Wales Bridge) and never knew that fact volver.

I won't say what it is in case anyone watches it.

When my son went to Aberystwyth University, he played for the American football team. One year they got to the final of the college bowl against Loughborough.
Along with many other parents etc. we went along to support.
A young man, clutching an armful of Welsh flags, thrust one into my hands. I pointed out that although I was supporting the Aberystwyth team, I was in fact English, well Anglo Italian to be precise.
He laughed and said it was allowed, as it was a special occasion.
I duly waved the flag a yelled along with the rest, although I didn't really understand what was going on!
My son along with the rest of the non Welsh team members was drilled by their Welsh colleagues to sing the Welsh national anthem in Welsh. It was magnificent!
They lost, but they sounded good.

A neighbour in this little corner of Wales always had the Welsh flag fluttering in his garden. He has gone now and so has the flag.
